About meI'm the happily single owner of two cats, Ray (named for Messrs. Bradbury & Harryhausen) and Lovecraft; assistant magazine editor; psychology/anthropology major; Sagittarian with the moon in Libra and Pisces rising; student of Epictetus; life-long Anglophile; fan of all things mid-century modern; enthusiastic letter writer. I love to lurk in libraries, book shops, dusty museums, second-hand record shops, thrift stores, gin joints and tiki bars.

Being an old maid is like death by drowning, a really delightful sensation after you cease to struggle ~ Edna Ferber

Once a woman is called "that crazy old maid" she can get away with anything ~ Florence King

About my librarySprawling but well-organized. As with my collection of vintage space-age vinyl, most of my books have been acquired on the cheap -- can't resist the thrill of the hunt! Once I get them home, however, I take my custodial duties very seriously.

Is there anyway I could get photocopies of the illustrations? When I was a child I loved this book and spent endless hours making paper dolls of the costumes. Now I'm very much older and would like to make costumes for a doll based on the pictures I remember. Peg Palmer p-palmer@comcast.net
...gin joints and tiki bars. Bwahahaha! Nice.
What a great username! Married_with_one_foster_cat just doesn't trip off the tongue as well ...!
Dear spinster_with_cats,
What a wonderful collection! I also collect John Dickson Carr and Sax Rohmer (I have some ancient sheet music with lyrics by Sax Rohmer) Have you read "The Dream Detective"????
Hi - yes, I noticed you and I had books in common and was quite impressed not only with your library but how well you worded things on your profile page. I am still developing my own profile but can tell you I love mysteries - British or American - written in the first half of the 20th century and often think I would have fit better into the world as it was in the 40's. I also have a cat, Nicolette - she's 2 yrs old and a long-haired tortiseshell. But, I also have a husband - the man of my dreams quite frankly - his obsession? LPs. We go to estate sales on weekends for great old records and books. We are leaving right now to go to one - maybe I'll find something wonderful to add to my library today!
Hi! Just a belated thanks for adding me to your Interesting Libraries list ...

You're most welcome; I'm finding that LibraryThing is soaking up a lot of time myself. It's pleasant time, though. I'm a "bachelor with cat" myself; mine is "Gulfrey", a cross between "Godfrey" and "Gullfree". He wa a tiny kitten being attacked by a seagull when I found him. Now about the size of a sofa cushion, he still is a little crazy around birds.
Nice Sax Rohmer collection! I'm jealous!
! lovecraft. what an awesome name. here, that's the name of a popular adult store. i'm assuming your cat's named after h.p.?
Almost forgot, another interesting biography. SCHULZ AND PEANUTS: A Biography by David Michaelis released this month. Once again for Christmas I'll be asking the missus for a few biographies.
Hi! Found this book to add to my collection. FRANKENSTEIN: A Cultural History by Susan Tyler Hitchcock. Hoping all is well with you.
Well the username drew me like the proverbial moth to flame but then I was hooked with your mention of Bradbury & Lovecraft, 2 authors who reeled me into serious reading oh about 38 yrs ago in jr high school. I'd never heard of Library Thing, egad another website to add to my list of favorites! I've had a love affair with words on a page since I chewed on my first baby book at 1 yr old! Still have that wonderful Golden Book who's title escapes me but I remember was about a puppy. Nice to meet you Vicki, am going now to peruse your list! Happy reading! Ann in Wilmington, NC
Hope your summer is going well. Just returned from a short trip with my troops and catching up on sleep. Brought an interesting book with me and only found time to read about fifty pages.
Really enjoyed the Houdini book. There was good info about Ching Ling Soo (Billy Robinson) and how he died doing the bullet trick. Fascinating about work he did with the US Secret Service and Treasury Departments and British Secret Services. Even a mention of collaboration on short stories with H.P. Lovecraft.
Just had to say I love your username! (the icon is fab too)
Hmmmm....I don't have anything specifically about that campaign or battle but I do have one book as a starting point. Queen Victoria's Little Wars by Byron Farwell. Don't believe I have anything else except for magazine articles. The group Military History could better help you with this one.
Once again, I've stumbled across a book and dropped what I was reading for it. Saw this biography of Harry Houdini, picked it up and now can't put it down. Absolutely fascinating character.
I use all the tags to be able to cross reference a book by more than one subject. I'm actually a very amatuer historian and wannabe librarian.
My personal favorite is WITH CHARITY TOWARD NONE: A Fond Look at Misanthropy by Florence King. It is the rare writer that can make me laugh out loud and she does it in this one.
I see you quoting Florence King. Ever read her work? I don't read much humor but she is one of the few. Ms. King does not suffer anyone she considers a fool gladly.
Hi, Vicki ~ yes, we do have a few books in common. We might have had more but I haven't been actually purchasing many books for the past dozen years or so. Most of what I read comes from the library.

Anyway, from your profile, you don't look like much of a slouch either! And I just LOVE the picture! Which kitty is that?
Interesting library. I've never met anyone outside my small circle of friends who has read or even heard of Sax Rohmer or Dennis Wheatley. Nice collection of Noir and Victorian/Edwardian era ghost stories. Welcome to LT.

Hi - We have apparently 1 book in common, but I just wanted to say that I love your username!
Hi Vicki and Welcome! Looks like we have a lot more in common than just seven books! You may want to check out the group: Cats, books, life is good.

All the best, XenaBallerina
