Not too many people have read Marvin Kaye's Umbrella series, but I enjoyed it!
I just exported my library and used PalmThing (and pilot-xfer) to put it on my spare Handspring so that I can go to a library booksale tomorrow. Just... like that.

It's amazing to me when something simply works. Shouldn't I have had an indecipherable error message or had to upgrade Java along the way? heh.
I continue to love your "Ack! Burn it!" tag. (I never did read all of that one...)
What? No copy of Selected Topics in Mathematics?
I enjoyed your review of The Owl Service - spot on. Although, in defence of Red Shift, the misery of its finale is somewhat tempered by Tom's message to Jan in code.

Unfortunately, some editions of the book simply don't include the message, so most readers probably don't realize that Tom even attempted a reconciliation. Did Jan go to see him after this? We'll never know; but I've always hoped that she did, and that the wound of two millenia was thereby healed.
Upon lengthy contemplation, I'm not sure whether me hoarding a book is a good indicator of perceived quality (e.g. must hoard anything by certain authors who are never reprinted)... maybe "having spare copies for when one wears out" is sufficiently independent of the vagaries of the publishing industry.
I like this. At what level do you rate "I hoard copies in case it goes out of print"
proposed rating scale (first draft):
5 - LIFE-ALTERING
4 1/2 - halflife-altering
4 - i'd make other people read it.
3 1/2 - i'd recommend it
3 - i'd defend owning it
2 1/2 - i'd admit to owning it
2 - blah. may reread someday, if bored
1 1/2 - had amusing moments but i'm done now
1 - near-total waste of time. i liked part of page 84.
1/2 - plan to compost it
0 - plan to burn it
psst... michael is Ephraim_Gadsby
