On more general concerns, as opposed to your essay topic, once you've finished Heyne I strongly
recommend F.A. Hayek's Individualism And Economic Order.
Give me an extension until Sunday.
Well, as a former professor I always jump at an opportunity to lecture, so I'll look through what I've been collecting during the next few days and give you some more suggestions.

As an aid to that could you tell me just where you are in this ideological politics? I don't mean by that your current position so much as your background [albeit, if you can handle Realizing Freedom then you can probably handle just about anything].

Could you also tell me if you have any other similar interests. For instance, I've been exploring (2) the interaction of religions and religions/societies in ancient times and (2) fundamentalism as both a religious and ideological phenomenon, these past four or five years. Does that ring any bells of interest with you?

I also have a good background in economic theory, political economy and history of economic thought, if any of that is of interest to you.

See how desparate the former professor is to lecture... ;-)
The Guide is generally pretty good but quite elementary. The tapes are about the same. I picked up my copy of both on ebay for a bargain price. Unless you're just starting into this area or have a high school student you're trying to educate, this would not be my pick of materials.

If you want similar items that are much more advanced then check out survey articles in the now defunct Inquiry Magazine [which are probably available cheap through a source like Bookfinder.com]. Institute For Humane Studies at one time also published some outstanding study guides on various topics.

If you haven't already seen a copy, Tom Palmer's new volume entitled Realizing Freedom is also a great read. Palmer is the editor/author of the Guide you inquired about, but that was obviously one of his early efforts or was purposely toned down.
