About me*technical editor
*Romeo, Michigan; but lived in San Diego, California for 20 years

I love books and animals, and both are my favorite things to talk about.

I love to attend author events and book signings.

About my libraryI own most of the books I list here. I prefer hard cover books because they look so much better in my bookcase. But hard cover books are expensive; so I bought most of my books used. I also save money on books by entering book contests.

At the same time, it's well known that Amazon has an indirect but real stake in LibraryThing—they bought Abebooks, who were our first minority partner. People keep reporting that Amazon has 40%. That's simply not true—it fails to take account of our second funder, Bowker. (I remain the majority; I can't say how the rest divides up.) But this certainly muddies the message. For what it's worth, I want LibraryThing to make more money, and therefore my, Bowker and Amazon's stake to be worth more and more, but with Amazon now holding 100% ownership of BOTH our competitors (Goodreads and Shelfari), we can hardly do so without emphasizing what sets us apart.

OK, I get what you're saying. I guess I gave Johnson leeway on the choppy parts because there were other parts that were not like that, that were seamlessly and lucidly executed--so I assumed the choppiness, when it happened, was purposeful. I took it to be fitting to the disjunction of a North Korean life. But such things are a matter of taste. I like books that confuse me and leave gaps and disorient me--as long as I feel there's a guiding intelligence and a reason.
Techeditor: I'm not trying to call you out on the Snobs thread; I would be genuinely interested to hear why you didn't like The Orphan Master's Son. I didn't think it was perfect, but I was very impressed by it in respect to it sweep, its scene-setting, its structure, and (usually, anyway) its sentence-level vividness. It's the first book I've read in a while that I wished I had written.
I agree with your comment about "Gone Girl" that the end sucks. Not only because the smarter and more evil character wins. This was not the kind of ending surprise I wanted to have after so much of good reading. I thought that maybe Nick's father would kill Amy or maybe Desi's alibi would be checked. The baby idea was a surprise, but not worth.
Yes U agree that Defending Jacob is getting a lot of positive press, but the book just didn't resonate with me as much as others. It is a good thriller, but not more than other thrillers I've read in the past.
