Just a quick note: I talked to my dad, and he indicated that Joseph Yoder was raised Mennonite, but that both his parents were Amish. His book "Rosannah of the Amish" tells the story of his (and his mother's) background. Apparently this book has just been republished by Herald Press, a Mennonite publisher. There's also a biography of him by Julia Kasdorf who is from the same "Big Valley," PA as him.

My recollection is that he was actually a Mennonite, but I should ask my dad how (other than geographical proximity) he got in so tight with the Amish -- it may have been his mum. I'm afraid I don't recall that part of the story.

Actually, I'm no relation of E.F. Schumacher (although I devoured his books when I was in college). The Yoder side of my dad's family is on the maternal side. I've never read "Rosannah of the Amish" (about Joe's experiences growing up), but I'm told it's largely about my relatives.

Oddly, since I could read music as a child, I always thought that the notation system developed in Amische Lieder was really confusing, but in hindsight it's actually quite clever. I wonder if he had any success in getting the different congregations to actually normalize their songs?

I'm amazed that you have a copy of Amische Lieder by Joseph Yoder. He's actually my dad's uncle, and I have our family's copy. I've never actually seen another one around! I'd love to hear how you came across yours.
