About meI'm a Kiwi in Amsterdam. You'll find my real library as user tikitu. This account is just a reading diary.

About my libraryI started this persona when I read a book so awful I wanted to write a review slamming it, but I also didn't want it on my LT profile messing with my stats. The plan was to put a couple of lines and a rating for everything I read. That didn't last long... The new plan is to keep it like a reading diary -- the 'reviews' won't be, but I'll try to keep the list up to date with at least basic impressions.

Most of the longer reviews tend to be pretty positive. This isn't because I'm not critical, but because I'm finding and rereading lots of old favourites -- also because since I started running short on time it's only the strongest responses that prise a review out of me. I'm not very good at numerical ratings though, so take them with a sizeable chunk of salt.

I'm reading The Dragonbone Chair now and you are right. I like it. I did stop in the middle to read The Deathly Hallows, but I imagine I will read through the trilogy with the uncatchy name by Xmas. Thanks for the recommendation.
The only Tad Williams I've read is Tailchaser's Song. You're the second person to mention his other books, so I've requested The Dragonbone Chair from the library. I've also got two of the Potter books from the library now. I'll select the most likely and purchase it for my son.
tikitu, You nailed that collection of Stephen Potter. I once bought the compendium, having read the books individually much earlier in life and finding them amusing in a dry, plonking sort of way. All together the books are too much of a good thing. I gave the book to a friend who I thought would appreciate it. I'd like to acquire the earlier books, as singletons. All that remains in my mind at the moment is "the Cough Willoughby Ploy" apropos of everything and nothing. Bombadillo
Wonderful review of Moby-Dick - classic it may be, but a lot of people don't seem to have the patience for it, and I'm glad some do! Too bad the humor is so often overlooked... a lot of the book seems to me to be making fun of itself in a fashion.
LOL :-) Maybe you missed this phrase in the Hoban review: "...with brilliant use of language." Thanks for writing. I've heard of Little, Big, but have not read it. I'll check it out.
I totally agree with what you said about Strange & Norrell. One of the best books I have ever read!
I appreciated your review of Norrell. Very well said! -John
