About meNoir librarian My tattoo, on sacrum - Celtic knotLibrarians think I'm a computer geek.

Techies think I'm a bookworm.

And my last roommate called me a librarian with a tattoo, and I wasn't even a librarian then.

I'm a librarian at the New York Public Library, working in the Bronx (but a lovely neighborhood, really. It's like Little Dublin), and live in Westchester county outside NYC, with my husband and two cats, Hamlet and Miranda (no, sadly, not after Shakespeare. After the Algonquin Cat, one of my childhood favorites). My Hamlet is grey and white and missing one eye, like the cat on the cover (well, OK, the one on the book cover is winking, but the effect is the same).

About my libraryMy library consists primarily of books I've not only read, but that I enjoy reading over and over again. Well, in terms of fiction - non-fiction I like to have around as reference, and tends heavily toward language (thesauruses, style guides). As a librarian, I weed; if I no longer value a book, it goes (usually to a book-swapping site so I can obtain a new one). And I like to have my favorites in hardcover - right now I have an insane number of books wishlisted on two book-swapping sites, almost all of them books I already own in paperback, but want in hardback. I've also added books I don't own to my catalog as well (tagged as @read-not-owned). Mostly books borrowed from the library - only stuff I feel is memorable in some way, though.

My fiction tastes are varied: I read almost every genre, though I certainly lean toward fantasy and science fiction. I think I enjoy the speculative fiction genres because I appreciate the creativity that world-building entails. As such, I prefer the SF that takes place in worlds substantially different than our own, and especially if the cultures are different - that, I think, is even more difficult to create than a different physical world, and even more fascinating - one of my favorites, Sheri Tepper, is particularly good at both aspects of world-building.

I do have a little bit of a weakness for nice leatherbound classics just to have on display in my living room - they account for the @will-never-read tag.

And finally, for non-fiction, my interests are:
Bodyart (cultural aspects)
(Books about) books
Consumerism
Design
Education & culture
English language usage (humorous)
Etymology
Evolutionary psychology (my, what a run of Es!)
Fashion advice
Religion and sociology
Signs and symbols
Technology and sociology
Usability

And if anyone is trying to figure out how I got the images to the right of the text: you can insert a style into the IMG tag, by putting style="float: right;" between IMG and SRC. In other words, your full tag will be:

It makes the text wrap around the picture. Obviously, you can do left, too.

By all means, if you see an error in my catalog data, please feel free to leave a comment and tell me so. I want good data.

Just clicked through to your home page...Caffeine withdrawal can definitely cause a headache, believe me! That's how the coffee traffickers hook you!
You have Isaac Asimov's Caliban by Roger MacBride entered with Asimov as author. Is this an error you want to be told about, or are you considering Asimov's contribution great enough to want him as author?
LOL- if you want to stick around for at least 35 years (I plan to live to be 100) I'll have my kids let you know if I put it on the market. By then, we may have had to buy the lot next door to build another 'annex'.
Got it; thanks! I'm having fun playing around with the different background colors on the site you linked to. This stuff is all new to me.
Timepiece - Thank you so much!
Not only was that really helpful, but also instructive!

Thanks again,
Carn
Hi timepiece. Thanks for the tips on "float right" and "float left" on your profile page. Question: How can I prevent the words from bumping up against the pictures when I do this?
Also, how can I stop the bottom book from bleeding over into the "About My Library section?

If you're willing to help, thank you!
Just as simple as asking. We're an equal opportunity beta testing employer. :)
That was a joke book someone gave George.
It was your response on the pet peeves thread in "I Survived the Vowel Shift" - #90, I believe, where you mentioned that you grew up in Tidewater, Virginia. I'm in Tennessee & coming across others who spent time growing up in the Tidewater area always piques my interest.
I understand. I was born at Ft. Eustis at MacDonald Army Hospital, some 45 years ago. We moved around a lot & wound up in Portsmouth in 10th grade.

Did your father leave the military or did you get to experience a full childhood of being a "military brat"?
Thanks for adding BannedBooksLibrary to your Interesting Libraries. Happy Reading!
Thanks for the tip!

Peace.
Of course that's ok! I love getting new friends on any of the sites I frequent, and someone who's local gets double seekrit bonus points and a kitten. Ok, or just gratitude.
cute cute cute.

now, about that cd list of yours ...
You DO have a very nice profile page!
Wow, neat page!
