Some writers, when they're writing a novel, write extensive details before they start the book. That works for some writers, and doesn't work for others. Me, I don't like outlines. I usually have a basic idea of where a novel is headed, but I like to give myself enough freedom to let the story flow where it will.
I wouldn't worry too much about the story not being long enough. Often times, ideas will branch out into new territories that you don't even expect. If you're in the mood to write a novel, you'll write a novel.
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps.
Write me anytime.
