About meI am a lifelong reader, but my lists most accurately reflect the reading I have been able to get back to in the last four or five years as my daughters have left for college and grown up.

About my libraryAs a former English major, I certainly prize beautiful language, intricate plots, and intelligence in my fiction. But I am also a lifelong avid reader and would never deny the pleasure I have received from all sorts of books, including mysteries, fantasy, and beach reads! So my rating system is perhaps a little different than some of my fellow Library Thing'ers.
5 stars: I don't reserve these for books of a lifetime. I give them to books that are hugely satisfying and offer a complete amazing reading experience. These are the books I get lost in, that create complete worlds, with surprising and amazing characters. I have given five stars to the most experimental of narratives and to traditional fat novels and to many things in between.
4 stars: These books have something extra -- exceptionally good writing, really good characters, a couldn't put it down quality, a character I really cared about.
3 stars: Simply good books that I enjoyed reading.
2 stars: Something lacking. 1 star: Something really lacking.
I also do not rate classics, young adult novels, and genre novels. If they are listed, I enjoyed them. But it's apples and oranges to try to compare these books to contemporary or literary fiction.
