The official story was he was asked to resign or leave at the end of his contract because they wanted fresh voices on the air. I think it was because the conservative members on the CPB board, including the chairman, I don't remember his name, he was later accused of corruption and resigned, I believe, anyway, they wanted NPR to take a more conservative view and to intimidate the rest of their broadcast staff used him as an example that no one was immune if they didn't toe the line.

Sure enough NPR is much less critical of the conservatives than they were.
