I saw your introduction on learning from and writing history. I'm green with envy about what you've done at this stage in your life. I just turned 60 and all I really want to do is go back to college and study history. I think I understand what you mean about not trusting the grand narratives. Sir Isaiah Berlin wrote an essay called "The Sense of Reality" with the premise that we cannot know enough about what happened in history to construct any type of theory of history that is valid. As for your statement about the powerful using history to control, it is just another one of the golden rules "Those that have the gold make the rules". After I got my B.A. in history I did a year of graduate work but had no desire to enter academia. Now I am of the age where I feel like I might be able to contribute something but circumstances, including a serious but not fatal chronic illness, make it difficult. I live in Georgia and they did just make it possible for anyone 62 and over to go to college for free. I can always hope. Drop me a line if you have the time, energy and inclination.
