About me My biggest hobbies are genealogy, local history, cartography and reading (preferably in combination).

About my library Over the years, I've accumulated loads of books. The main topics are genealogy, local history (Gelderland, Zeeland, Overijssel, Noord-Brabant, Wisconsin), emigration (mainly nineteenth century stuff) and cartography. For even more fun, I read a lot of fantasy books and historical novels or biographies.

At this time, I've added most of my books in my living room. I have finished entering my fantasy and scifi collection, my English literature section and my books about cartography and Dutch emigration to the US. I'm currently entering my local history books. I've yet to start on the books in my study (mostly genealogical sources like cemetery records) and the attic (mostly books on computer science and management studies and children's books). I own or used to own all of the books that are in my collection.

About my ratings:

5 stars: Absolute love it, the kind of book I would pack if I had to live on a deserted island. Should be on the bookshelf of anybody interested in this topic.

4 stars: I liked it better than I thought, highly recommended.

3 stars: I liked it. Usually this is a book that delivered what I thought it would, nothing more, nothing less.

2 stars: a bit disappointing or not very a interesting topic in the first place.

1 star: I really didn't like it or the topic didn't interest me at all. I would not buy this book again if I lost it in a fire. If you're a friend of mine and like any of my 1 star books, I would happily give it to you.

0 stars: I haven't gotten around to reading or rating it.

About my tags:
Most of my tags are about the subjects of the books. I also use some special tags:

Digitaal (digital): Means I do not have a physical copy of the book, just a digital one. I enter digital books as well because I want to be able to find all the items I have on a certain topic, regardless of whether it's paper or bits and bytes.

Facsimile: Means I do not own the original book, just a later exact reproduction. I love collecting these, they're just as much fun as the originals and a great deal cheaper. I will use the original date of publication, to reflect the date of the content.

In bestelling (on order): I don't want people buying me books I've already ordered, so I enter books even before I get them! With the current exchange rate, I buy lots of books from Amazon.com, which usually take over a month to get here. In the meanwhile, they'll be in my collection as 'in bestelling'.

Ontzameld (de-collected): These are books I used to own, but gave away to people who enjoy them more. It feels like a shame to delete them though, so hence this separate tag.

Other non-topic tags I use:
jaarboek (yearbook), tijdschrift (magazine), biografie (biography), scheepsjournaal (ship's journal), handleiding (guide).

England and Switzerland are high on my list. I study the medieval period a good bit, and I tend to focus on Medieval England the most. My family is originally from Switzerland (going back to the 1600s), so I'm inclined to visit there as well, as much for the history as for the dramatic landscapes.

I would also like to visit the Netherlands. Where should I go first when visiting the Netherlands?

As an American, I'm very envious of the rich history Europe has to offer. One day, I'll make the trip across the ocean to see your lovely continent. For a first time visitor to Europe, which countries would you recommend I go to?

I hear Cornwell's Arthurian series is one of his best. It's on my list to read after I finish the Saxon Chronicles.

As for Sharon Kay Penman, I have not read her, but I've had many other people suggest her, and she is definitely on my list. I wish I had more time to read than I do. I only have about 15 to 30 mins of reading time each night; my schedule keeps me fairly busy.

I would love to visit an authentic medieval castle, but I don't get that opportunity much living here in the United States. Which castles have you visited?

Always nice to find other fans of Cornwell and Martin. I'm currently finishing up the Saxon Chronicles. Still have Lords of the North and Sword Song to read. What's your favorite series by Cornwell? I also still have A Feast for Crows left to read before Dance with Dragons comes out. How did you like Feast for Crows compared to the other three?
