About meMy biggest hobbies are genealogy, local history, cartography and reading (preferably in combination).

About my libraryOver the years, I've accumulated loads of books. The main topics are genealogy, local history (Gelderland, Zeeland, Overijssel, Noord-Brabant, Wisconsin), emigration (mainly nineteenth century stuff) and cartography. For even more fun, I read a lot of fantasy books and historical novels or biographies.

At this time, I've added all the books in my living room and the guest room. These cover topics like my fantasy and scifi collection, my English and Dutch literature sections, my books about cartography, Dutch emigration to the US and local history (mainly about the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands). I've yet to start on the books in my study (mostly genealogical sources like cemetery records) and the attic (mostly books on computer science and management studies and children's books). I own or used to own all of the books that are in my collection.

About my ratings:

5 stars: Absolute love it, the kind of book I would pack if I had to live on a deserted island. Should be on the bookshelf of anybody interested in this topic.

4 stars: I liked it better than I thought, highly recommended.

3 stars: I liked it. Usually this is a book that delivered what I thought it would, nothing more, nothing less.

2 stars: a bit disappointing or not very a interesting topic in the first place.

1 star: I really didn't like it or the topic didn't interest me at all. I would not buy this book again if I lost it in a fire. If you're a friend of mine and like any of my 1 star books, I would happily give it to you.

0 stars: I haven't gotten around to reading or rating it.

About my collections:

Digitale collectie (digital): Means I do not have a physical copy of the book, just a digital one. I enter digital books as well because I want to be able to find all the items I have on a certain topic, regardless of whether it's paper or bits and bytes.

Onderweg (en route): I don't want people buying me books I've already ordered, so I enter books even before I get them! With the current exchange rate, I buy lots of books from Amazon.com, which usually take over a month to get here. In the meanwhile, they'll be in my 'en route' collection.

Ontzameld (de-collected): These are books I used to own, but gave away to people who enjoy them more. It feels like a shame to delete them though, so hence this separate tag.

DVDs: Since the collection feature became active, I've decided to add my DVD collection as well.

I also use some non-topic tags:
jaarboek (yearbook), tijdschrift (magazine), biografie (biography), scheepsjournaal (ship's journal), handleiding (guide).

Hoi Yvette,
Dus ik maakte me ernstig zorgen.

Thanks so much for being my LibraryThing Secret Santa! I'm sorry I didn't reply to the questions/comments on my page - I didn't get email prompts, so I never realized those messages were awaiting me. In any case, yes, your hunch was correct and every first book in my limited LibraryThing catalog represents a complete series I have read, so I have the rest of the George R.R. Martin series already. I have not, however, read any of the items you selected so it sounds perfect. Cheers!
I'm also interested in history -- and I'm sure I would agree that it's a very cool place to work! Enjoy!
You're welcome! I saw that you live in the Netherlands, but thought a major academic library there might have it ... hope the Royal Library does.... (How lucky you are to work in the same building!)

Thanks again for writing!
Hi,
Thank you for writing (re. the recommendation of Cartographic Encounters I left on your SantaThing page)! I'm happy to know it's the kind of book you like. On abebooks.com there is a copy for 39.95 listed in very nice condition ... but I also wanted to say that if there is a large library (esp. a university library) near you, borrowing might be something to try. Because of the price I haven't (yet) bought a copy, but I have checked it out from libraries several times. Or ... there is this very interesting article: Gregory A. Waselkov, "Lamhatty's Map," Southern Exposure 16, no. 2 (1988): 23-29. (Back issues of Southern Exposure come up on Ebay. Or I think I have a black-and-white photocopy of this article somewhere, and might be able to find it and scan it for you!) Also, Powhatan's Mantle: Indians in the Colonial Southeast includes sections on cartography, and it's less expensive and, I think, more readily available (though also more regional in focus) than Cartographic Encounters is.
I hope you enjoy all your SantaThing reading!

Hi Yvette,
thank you very much for being my Secret Santa! There was a bit of a problem with Amazon where I hadn't received the delivery, but they resent them and I now finally have both of them - yippee. I've started the David Farland one already and the other one is sat looking at me. I agree, the fun is having a new author to discover, so again, thank you very much and Happy New Year,
Jo
Welcome to the 2009 75 Books Challenge. Thanks for joining in!
England and Switzerland are high on my list. I study the medieval period a good bit, and I tend to focus on Medieval England the most. My family is originally from Switzerland (going back to the 1600s), so I'm inclined to visit there as well, as much for the history as for the dramatic landscapes.

I would also like to visit the Netherlands. Where should I go first when visiting the Netherlands?

As an American, I'm very envious of the rich history Europe has to offer. One day, I'll make the trip across the ocean to see your lovely continent. For a first time visitor to Europe, which countries would you recommend I go to?

I hear Cornwell's Arthurian series is one of his best. It's on my list to read after I finish the Saxon Chronicles.

As for Sharon Kay Penman, I have not read her, but I've had many other people suggest her, and she is definitely on my list. I wish I had more time to read than I do. I only have about 15 to 30 mins of reading time each night; my schedule keeps me fairly busy.

I would love to visit an authentic medieval castle, but I don't get that opportunity much living here in the United States. Which castles have you visited?

Always nice to find other fans of Cornwell and Martin. I'm currently finishing up the Saxon Chronicles. Still have Lords of the North and Sword Song to read. What's your favorite series by Cornwell? I also still have A Feast for Crows left to read before Dance with Dragons comes out. How did you like Feast for Crows compared to the other three?
