Professional photographer and wanderer, [[Theron Humphrey]], and Maddie the coonhound - known for known for their wildly popular Instagram and Tumblr pages - have hit the road in support of their debut book [Maddie on Things]. They've inspired and are participating in our Spring Open Studio Weekend art show, "Inspired by Maddie." Come meet Theron and Maddie, as well as the local artists and community members taking part in this exhibit. In addition, Random Rescue, a unique dog adoption service, will have information about available dogs and the services they offer, as well as homemade dog treats for sale to benefit Random Rescue.

Her favourite mediums are graphite, colored pencil and oil and her favourite subjects are horses and cats. Her fine art pet portraits have sold in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, and the US. Elizabeth Llewellyn's art is realistic and detailed in style. She loves teaching art to all ages.

Learn about photography with Stewart McHenry!

Stewart was born and raised in Chicago where he received an undergraduate education in art history at the University of Chicago. Studio art classes, at the U. of C. were with teachers from the Art Institute of Chicago. His life did not follow a straight line from childhood to the present day as a photographer and artist. He made several digressions along the way. Traveling and attending schools in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa proved inspirational and very stimulating and the source of many of his photographs. The medium primarily used and enjoyed by Stewart is collage, sculptured 3D photography. His works inevitably come from a feeling of fun, joy and playfulness. Working with patterns of space, depth and design he smiles with the creation and feeling of movement. Playing with empty space is another great delight for him. His works often play with simple curves or liner geometry but on other occasions they are flamboyant, curvy luxuriant and complex.

Discover the Civil War in today's Vermont with Howard Coffin.

Today, throughout Vermont, it is possible to identify hundreds and hundreds of Civil War-related sites. Throughout Vermont are soldier homes, halls where war meetings encouraged enlistments, churches where soldier funerals were held and abolitionists spoke, monuments to those who served, hospital sites, and homes where women gathered to make items for the soldiers. The Vermont State House is a virtual Civil War museum. A building survives in Woodstock where the war was administered. Cemeteries hold the gravestones of many of the 34,000 who fought. A field even exists where in 1803 a Quaker preacher heard a voice from above fortell a bloody war over slavery. With the help of this book, Civil War sites can be located as in no other state, taking the reader through the beautiful Vermont landscape of hill farms and small towns that looks more like the Civil War era than that of any other state.

A seventh‐generation Vermonter with six ancestors who served in Vermont regiments, Howard Coffin lectures extensively on the Civil War. He is also the author of Full Duty: Vermont in the Civil War; Nine Months to Gettysburg; and The Battered Stars. A former press secretary to U.S. Senator James Jeffords, Coffin and his wife, Sue, live in Montpelier, Vermont.

"Diane Swan writes about deceptively ordinary life in deceptively ordinary diction. I say “deceptively” because what makes the transparent language of her poems into poetry is a flawless sense of rhythm, proportion, and narrative that isn’t ordinary at all. Her poems go down like a glass of water that turns out to have been 180 proof vodka— in this case, the punch is pure emotion, most often emotion for someone else, about someone else, an emotion of concern or love, passionate and hard-won. They aren’t egotrapped in the theatre of her own mind. “We dare not be boring” wrote Marianne Moore, and Diane Swan never is, as we read the poem or when it’s finished. The turns in her poems— their shaping, the angles they take on experience— entertain me as much as individual details made palpable, all of it operating inside a live voice on the page talking about what matters to her as if she were sitting across from you at a table. Sir Philip Sidney, echoing Horace’s idea of the social function of poetry, said its purpose was “to teach and to delight.” This is what Diane Swan’s poems do. They are implicitly moral: like beautiful music, they teach us how to feel. Though she would never make this claim for herself, the world would be a better place if we all felt for others as unsentimentally and honestly as she does." ―Michael Ryan, The Boston Review

Diane Swan was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She and her husband moved to Vermont in 1970 where she attended Community College and received an Associate degree. She later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing from Warren Wilson College. She has worked as a poet-in-the-schools, taught in the Step-Up program for women, the EXCEL pro-gram for gifted high school students, and on the faculties of the New England Young Writers Conference at Breadloaf, and the Champlain College Young Vermont Writers Conference. For over twenty years she facilitated writing workshops for residents in nursing homes, day centers and assisted living facilities. She lives in Barre, Vermont with her husband, artist Fred Swan.

Join [[Adrie Kusserow]] for a reading from and discussion of her latest book, Refuge. As an anthropologist, [[Adrie Kusserow]]’s ethnographic poetry probes culture and globalization with poems about Sudanese refugees based in Uganda, Sudan, and the United States, especially the “Lost Boys of Sudan.”

[[Adrie Kusserow]] is Professor of Cultural Anthropology at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University and an M.A. in Comparative Religion from Harvard Divinity School. Her first poetry collection Hunting Down the Monk was published by BOA Editions in 2002 and carried a Foreword by Karen Swenson. Her most recent international fieldwork trips support girls’ education (South Sudan – www.Africaeli.org) and Youth Media Literacy and Gross National Happiness in Bhutan. She lives with her family in Underhill Center, Vermont, where she was born and raised.

Over the last several years, keeping backyard chickens has become a national phenomenon. And as flocks migrate from rural homesteads to suburban and urban locales, a question arises – how can a person house one’s birds in a safe, sanitary, and aesthetically pleasing way, so as not to tick off the neighbors? Phoenix Books is proud to present [Reinventing the Chicken Coop], a presentation by Matt Wolpe on building contemporary, well-designed chicken shelters for the urban and suburban enthusiast.

In their book [Reinventing the Chicken Coop], Wolpe and coauthor [[Kevin McElroy]] have expanded the definition of what a coop is and can be; just as the domain of the chicken has expanded from the farm to urban and suburban backyards, Wolpe and McElroy have expanded the design of the chicken shelter from the utilitarian to a proud statement of sustainability and individuality.

As evidenced by the proliferation of community-organized “Tours de Coops” across the country, chicken-keepers are on a quest to find that perfect coop — one that can serve multiple purposes, integrate seamlessly into urban and suburban environments, and in general function better in the contemporary world. [Reinventing the Chicken Coop] leads their way.

[[Kevin McElroy]] and [[Matthew Wolpe]] are the owners of Just Fine Design/Build, a studio that produces original handmade furniture and small structures. Their chicken coop design Chick-in-a-Box won Editor’s Choice for Design at the Bay Area Maker Faire and was featured on the blogs of Make magazine, Farmhouse Modern, and TreeHugger. About Broken Strings: When Vermont puppeteer Fay finds a friend dead of poisoned yew and her half-sister strung up like a marionette, she and her family of foster kids pursue the killer.

Nancy Means Wright has published 17 books, including a YA novel and 6 adult mysteries (most recently, Broken Strings, all set in Vermont); and two novels featuring 18th-century Mary Wollstonecraft. Her children’s mysteries have received an Agatha Award and Agatha nomination. Her latest book for young people is Walking into the Wild, an historical novel, set in the Republic of Vermont. A longtime teacher and former Bread Loaf Scholar, Nancy lives in Middlebury with her spouse and two Maine Coon cats.

Join us for an event with Linda M. Maloney, a priest of the Episcopal diocese of Vermont and the Anglican diocese of Montreal. She has been a professor of U.S. history and of the New Testament, and will speak about her recently re-issued book, The Captain from Connecticut.

The Captain from Connecticut is the first definitive biography of the man who became a national hero when he commanded USS Constitution in the dramatic victory over HMS Guerrière in the War of 1812. Isaac Hull’s outstanding seamanship was in evidence throughout his career, but Maloney points out that Hull was actually the most pacific of men, and it is ironic that he is remembered for his tactical prowess during one naval battle. The famed battle against Guerrière is skillfully recounted with the verve and detailed attention that characterize the author’s approach to her subject. Drawing extensively on Hull’s correspondence and on contemporary naval records, she skillfully reconstructs Hull’s postwar life against the turbulent years of the first half of the nineteenth century.

The author has plumbed all the relevant documentary collections and secondary sources available. Hull’s career has been closely integrated with those of other principal naval officers of his time. One learns as much about the challenges of navy life for Hull’s family as about the man himself, and peaceful times are given at least equal weight with periods of warfare. [Where's Waldo?] In Burlington, of course. The famous children’s book character in the striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting twenty-five different local businesses throughout our community this July. Those who spot him can win prizes, including stickers, book coupons and more. From City Market to the Fletcher Free Library, from Outdoor Gear Exchange to Global Pathways, Waldo figures will be well hidden in downtown Burlington business establishments. Find Waldo is a great summer vacation activity, and a wonderful way for residents to support local business and the Shop Local movement.

Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Burlington!” passport with the names of all the participating sites, and get their passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. The first 100 Waldo seekers to get their passports stamped or signed at ten or more sites can bring their passports back to Phoenix Books Burlington to collect prizes. Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to entry in a grand prize drawing on July 31, with the top prize being a 6-volume deluxe set of Waldo books.

Join Gary Furlong to learn about the triumphs and struggles of Milton, Vermont as it established a strong identity through the years. Gary is the author of Milton, a new addition to the Images of America series.

Milton, located in the northwest corner of Vermont on the shores of Lake Champlain, covers some 67 square miles. The area attracted settlers who found the pine forests ideal for lumbering and the land fertile enough to farm. One-room schoolhouses dotted the landscape and commerce grew in the Main and River Streets area. With the arrival of the railroad and the creation of summer camps and recreation areas, Milton quickly became an attractive destination for visitors from Boston, New York and beyond. Yet, rural, northern Vermont was not an easy place to make a living or create a community.

Gary Furlong has been a teacher at Milton High School for over 23 years and a resident of Milton for over eight years. As a history teacher and board member of the Milton Historical Society, Gary, along with the members of the society, is interested in preserving the history of Milton for future generations.

About the book: Cousins Coleman and Dinah Greene moved from North Carolina to New York after college to make their mark on the art world: Coleman is the editor of an influential arts magazine and Dinah is the owner of a print gallery in Greenwich Village. But their challenges are mounting as one of Coleman's writers is discovered selling story ideas to a competitor and The Greene Gallery is in the red because sales are down. When billionaire Heyward Bain arrives with a glamorous assistant, announcing plans to fund a fine print museum, Coleman is intrigued and plans to get to know Bain and publish an article about him. Phoenix Books is proud to present Archer Mayor, who will read from and discuss his newest Joe Gunther Novel, Three Can Keep a Secret! (Three Can Keep a Secret will be on our shelves in October of 2013.)

Archer Mayor is the author of the highly acclaimed, Vermont-based series featuring detective Joe Gunther, which the Chicago Tribune describes as “the best police procedurals being written in America.” He is also a past winner of the New England Independent Booksellers Association Award for Best Fiction—the first time a writer of crime literature has been so honored. In 2011, Mayor’s 22nd Joe Gunther novel, Tag Man, earned a place on the New York Times bestseller list for hardback fiction.

Before turning his hand to fiction, Mayor wrote history books, the most notable of which concerned the lumber and oil business in Louisiana from the 1870s to the 1970s. This book was published by the University of Georgia Press and very well received. Mayor’s critically-acclaimed series of police novels features Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont police department. The books, which have been appearing about once a year since 1988, have been published in five languages (if you count British,) and routinely gather high praise from such sources as the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the New Yorker, and many others, often appearing on their “ten best” yearly lists.
