► mEin Viertel 100 - 25 Jahre Bundestreffen

In 1984, poet/activist/lesbian Audre Lorde went to Germany for cancer treatment. Her years there not only marked a resurgence of her written work (The Cancer Journals) but also the development of a vibrant Afro German community.
Afro Germans are plagued by invisibility. There is no official census of Blacks in Germany. And until 1984 they were simply referred to as "War Babies" (the offspring of Black soldiers). Audre Lorde initiated a gathering of Afro German men and women, which resulted in the 1987 publication of Farbe bekennen (Showing Our Colors).
25 years later, the Afro German community continues to organize for self determination and recognition. The documentary is a wonderful insight into emancipatory struggles of building communities, as well as the spaces that have been created by political engagement, friendships and love.

Juli (a) Rivera's first documentary Mein Viertel 100 (translated: "My Quarter of 100") made in 2011, is the first documentary from a member of the Black community about the Black community in Germany. It talks about an annual meeting which was highly inspired by Audre Lorde during her visit in Germany in 1984.It was produced without any funding and is a work that could only exist with the help and goodwill of the people who run the annual meeting of Afro Germans for over 25 years.

Fritz Lang gives us as steamy, twisted and tawdry a film as anyone could possibly get away with in the 1940’s. Edward G Robinson is a henpecked husband who gets involved with a prostitute played by the incendiary Joan Bennett. Murder and blackmail follow quite quickly. It’s a tense noir classic that has recently been reissued by Kino films from a new print on loan from the Library of Congress.
