The plot was good but made even better by the renewed marriage of Harry and Fair. Plus, I learned alot about grapes, wine, and what it takes to operate a vineyard. Very interesting. Thanks again for a great story."
Bantam (2007), Mass Market Paperback, 320 pages
tags: mystery, welsh corgi, cats, Virginia

How to take the Answer from God or Faith thru Fasting, Power thru Prayer by A. A. Allen

padre2's review: "I found this tract in among a collection of materials that were donated to me. Finding this little booklet (tract) of no more than 40 pages, having never read anything by A. A. Allen, I thought I would give it a go.

This little tract is from the tent ministry of A. A. Allen who was a famous Pentecostal tent revivalist in the mid-50s and 60s. Designed as a call for people to join him in regular fasting and prayer to God for a revival, the gist of the tract is that we need to wrestle the answers to our prayers from the clutch of the devil. Using the story of Daniel's prayer being held up by the Prince of Persia, he argues that the devil can "capture", if you will, the answers that God has given to our prayers preventing them from being fulfilled in our lives. He contends that only through fasting and prayer can we hope to see these most important answers released by the enemy.

While the premise of the tract, leaves something to be desired from a biblical standpoint, I did enjoy and find impressive the extensive use of Scripture. It seems that his particular generation had a dedication and devotion to the Word of God that is often lacking in our day."
A. A. This is my fourth or fifth book in this series. I really enjoy the characters especially the animals. Having a corgi and two cats myself, I am always amused by how well the author depicts and interprets the behavior of her animals. It makes one look at one's own animals in a different light.

Being a clergyman, I did pick up on one inaccuracy in her description of her pastor's vestments. Not that it made a hill of beans to the story. It is just something I noted. She describes in two places what is typically called a stole as a surplice. A surplice is a white short garment worn overtop of a cassock. It typically has short billowing sleeves and is waist length. A stole on the other hand is the cloth that drapes over the neck and is usually the color of the season and may have religious symbols embroidered in it. It a stole that she refers to when she is describing her pastor's colorful and ornately decorated surplice."
Bantam Books (2004), Hardcover

Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt: A Novel by Anne Rice

padre2's review: "I thoroughly enjoyed Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. A wonderful telling of the Christ story from Jesus' perspective. As one review has already stated, there is nothing objectionable to be found in Anne Rice's telling of the story. However, I would add that this is because Anne Rice has done her research and has given us much food for thought. Through her writing we see what the scriptures may actually mean when it says of the child that he "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.""
Ballantine Books (2008), Edition: Reprint, Paperback, 384 pages

Well-intentioned dragons : ministering to problem people in the church by Marshall Shelley

padre2's review: "Recommended to me by my Bishop, this book has been a life-saver. Filled with practical wisdom on how to deal with difficult people and situations which arise in pastoral work, the book is a must read for pastors and their staff.

Two key things drawn from the book. First, "dragons" need ministry and cannot just be dismissed or written off. As Shelley points out, the goal is not to destroy the dragon it is to minister to them and the situations driving the conflict.

Second, sometimes it is the pastor's own behavior or lack thereof that can nurture a dragon into existence. I appreciate Shelley's very honest appraisal of the pastoral role in the conflict with difficult parishoners. Throughout the book, author calls the minister to exercise pastoral sensitivity and prayerful responses to the words and actions of dragons.

Again, an excellent read for every minister. I can't think of a pastor who would not identify with the many case studies Shelley uses throughout the book."
Waco, Tex. : Word Books, c1985.

Respect : understanding Caribbean British Christianity by Joe Aldred

padre2's review: "Aldred's work is an excellent study of the history and development of British Caribbean Christianity. In truth, Nouwen's description of the nuclear man is a description of the emerging post-modern generation.

The first three chapters of this treatise provided interesting insights into the complexities and dilemmas facing ministers in the emerging post-modern mileau. However, it is the last chapter on Ministry by a Lonely Ministry in which Nouwen describes the role of the "wounded healer" that gives this book it's enduring value. The description of the "wounded healer" provides the reader (especially those engaged in ministry) a paradigm for understanding their role and it's power in the lives of others. What is more, in my estimation, the wounded healer provides a model for ministry that transcends the age of postmodern man and is applicable in every age."
Image (1979), Paperback, 128 pages
