Book tastes

I love smart, imaginative, language-driven writing of all kinds.

Don't get this!

It's probably obvious from a brief glance at my library, but you probably want to avoid angels and past-life regressions, patriotic political memoirs, and formulaic bodice-rippers. Not that you were thinking of those, but I didn't want to leave this space blank.

Other notes

There's still a substantial portion of my collection not recorded by LibraryThing (give me a break——it's only been 12 years), mostly fiction. If you're thinking, "My god, he doesn't own any Nabokov! Or Austen!" or what-have-you, I promise you're wrong.

Secret Santa

lucienspringer's Secret Santa is Tombleweed. Help Tombleweed pick the right book.

Tombleweed: Dear Lucien,

First of all: what a wonderful and very extensive library you have! That didn't make it easy for me to choose just the book for you. A lot of the titles I had in mind were already in your library. Luckily, the world is full of beautiful books and I found some you didn't seem to have in your library but should be there.

First of all there is W.G. Sebald. It is the only author ever whose use of language moved me to tears. I hope you enjoy it just as much.

Then there is a Japanese novella, which I read in Dutch this year, and it was one of the best written things I've ever read.

I saw you had some Dutch en Belgian authors in your library, but I saw two very important writers who have been translated into English but were missing from your collection. Willem Elsschot's cheese is a classic, and it's a shame not more of his books are translated into English. 'Beyond sleep' by W.F. Hermans is also an amazing book.

I'm Belgian from the Dutch-speaking part, and my French isn't that good. But lately there were a few very good Dutch translations of French books, which - If they had been available in English - would've made the list without a doubt. Because they perfectly fit in your library. I wasn't sure if you could read French, so they didn't make it. As an extra gift, I'll just give you the name of the books, maybe suggest them to a local publisher? It is Maurice Pons (book called Les Saisons) and J.M Paroutaud (La Ville Uncertaine).

Anyway, I hope you will enjoy these books and discover some new stuff. Let me know!
