Book tastes

I love history, most specifically the Italian Renaissance and the 18th Century, as well as classic literature and poetry. Books about books, owls, cats, and historical costuming are also welcome. (Check out my Wishlist if you're stumped.)

Don't get this!

I dislike most modern historical fiction, and I'd prefer nothing too sexually or violently graphic.

Secret Santa

hillaryrose7's Secret Santa is mmseiple. Help mmseiple pick the right book.

mmseiple: I would suggest a play by Goldoni, since it doesn't look like she has any. He is an 18th-century Italian playwright who I think would mesh well with her interests, plus his stuff is fun. : ) It looks like the easiest one to find in translation is A Servant of Two Masters: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1848421931/ I included the link because it's a little hard to sort through editions on Amazon. mabith: When Books Went to War by Molly Manning, Empire of Cotton by Sven Beckert, Unmentionable by Therese ONeill (based on other humorous non-fiction books she has). (Wed, 05 Dec 2018 12:16:24 -0500)

mmseiple: Alternatively, maybe one of the famous Spanish Golden Age playwrights, since she doesn't seem to have them either, like Calderón de la Barca's Life is a Dream: https://www.amazon.com/Dream-Penguin-Classics-Pedro-Calderon/dp/0143104829/ or something by Lope de Vega: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0199540179/ They're both 17th century, and quite good. I think Goldoni would be the best choice, though. (Wed, 05 Dec 2018 12:17:21 -0500)

mmseiple: Life is a Dream is also available as a Dover Thrift Edition (only $3.50), so it might be good if there is a little money left over: https://www.amazon.com/Life-Dream-Dover-Thrift-Editions/dp/0486421244/ (Wed, 05 Dec 2018 13:16:27 -0500)

mmseiple: Happy holidays! I am filling in for your original Santa. :) I saw you had a lot of classic plays in your library, but no Goldoni, and I thought that he would be right up your alley. And that got me thinking about more classic plays, so I threw in Calderón de la Barca's Life is a Dream, which I loved, for good measure. I hope that these translations do them justice. Enjoy!
