Book tastes

Classic literature, history, historical fiction, math and science, Peanuts (the comic strip), bridge (the card game), cooking, travel, trivia. I don't mind the occasional surprise.

Don't get this!

I'm not usually all that excited about science fiction or fantasy. Romance is right out.

Other notes

I know some consider this sacrilege, but Ender's Game was just about the worst book I ever read. Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch and Robin Sloan's Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore were both very close on my "hated" list. My favorite books I read in 2018 were The Radium Girls and SPQR.

thornton37814: The Peanuts Family Cookbook by Weldon Owen just came out this fall. I didn't see it listed in his library. He might enjoy that one. (Tue, 27 Nov 2018 17:44:02 -0500)

ateolf: I hope enjoy these books! I tried to strike a solid core of fiction in the realms of historical, mathematical, and classic. Hopefully, I didn't make a wrong move by leaning on some bigger, more expensive books, but those seemed to me the best choices at the time! The Gold Bug Variations hits a pretty good nexus of history and math. The Sot-Weed Factor gets pretty deep into the historical real, while being just a flat-out entertaining and enjoyable read. Flatland is the urtext in math in fiction. Against Nature kinda fell from filling in an awkward gap in the remaining funds, but it's a good classic and I hope you'll enjoy it as well! lorannen: Removed The Sot-Weed Factor (9781628971569) due to availability. (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 01:04:28 -0500)

WeeTurtle: I would suggest "Bridge with the Blue Team" but I don't see that it's readily available. (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 01:28:15 -0500)

jburlinson: The Praise Singer, by Mary Renault. 10.93. 978-0375714207 (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 01:39:06 -0500)

karenb: Our Nigh ($10) counts as both history and classic literature.

(Seconding the Powers & Flatland.) (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 02:48:42 -0500)

jburlinson: The Praise Singer, by Mary Renault. 10.93. 978-0375714207 (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 16:33:04 -0500)

Cariola: These came up as books erichbell35 should borrow from my library:

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan. $10.52 9780099593584 https://www.bookdepository.com/Narrow-Road-Deep-North-Richard-Flanagan/9780099593584?ref=grid-view&qid=1544653102606&sr=1-2

Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey. $11.19. 9780571270163 https://www.bookdepository.com/Oscar-Lucinda-Peter-Carey/9780571270163?ref=grid-view&qid=1544653490420&sr=1-1

(Wed, 12 Dec 2018 17:27:41 -0500)

libraryperilous: It's too bad Killers of the Flower Moon is $12.71 right now. It would appeal to someone who rated The Radium Girls highly: a similar rage-inducing historical injustice that's still very timely and a similar narrative nonfiction style.

Things Fall Apart, $10.76, ISBN 0385474547, link

Grendel (Gardner), $11.64, ISBN 0679723110, link

ateolf: Original Santa here. Here are runner-up suggestions:

A High Wind in Jamaica

13.66

I think that gets to be a pretty close replacement. (Wed, 12 Dec 2018 19:49:28 -0500)

ILuvBookplates: How about Peanuts Friends Forever by Charles Shultz? Amazon is showing it in paperback for $10.87 and says it is in stock.

lorannen: Replaced with Santa's alternate A High Wind in Jamaica (0940322153) and Oscar & Lucinda (0679777504) suggested by Cariola. ericbell35 already has Ship Fever.

Done. (Fri, 14 Dec 2018 04:11:44 -0500)
