I primarily read fantasy, with regular forays into science fiction, historical fiction, and literary fiction. I like tight, well-woven narratives, living inside of characters' heads and fully immersing myself in their lives and worlds, and writing that is clear and not distracting. I primarily read works intended for an adult audience, but I love a good middle grade story with wider appeal. Some of my favorite recent reads include The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Circe, Uprooted, The Murderbot Diaries, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow. My Favorites collection on here includes many other books. I can enjoy a dark tale, but not if it lacks humor and not if it feels like it's every character for themselves or it feels like the protagonist is pitted against the whole world (e.g. The Queens of Innis Lear, The Lie Tree, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. I like a sense of humor with my darkness, and I much prefer books about teamwork and companionship and compassion to tales of isolation and tragedy.)
Don't get this!
No YA titles, please. (I like a lot of YA titles, but I'm not in the mood for YA right now.) And no nonfiction, please. (My nonfiction tastes are too scattered to make picking titles easy.) Please do not include books published prior to 2017. Also, no grimdark, please. (I do not like dark and hopeless.) And please, no graphic novels. (My collection isn't up-to-date on here.) Please don't get books already included in my LT collections, or other books by authors whose work is already included in my LT collections.
No hardback books, please; just paperbacks. Please limit books selected to titles originally published in the past two years (2017 and 2018). I prefer standalone fiction to series. If you really want to point me toward a series, I'd prefer to receive just the first book, please, to get a taste for it before committing further. I would really appreciate it if at least one title were light-hearted and whimsical.
