Here's a thread to post bugs in LibraryThing Local, a spin-off from the main discussion thread.

Mar 3, 2008, 8:06am Top

Elsewhere, before I could make this, sophies_choice posted this bug:

"First I want to say: this is great! Wow, it's very cool to check out what things are happening in your neighbourhood!

I added a few bookstores and a library, that went OK. I wanted to add an event now, but it seems I can't. I get an empty page (well empty apart from the logo and the tabs/menu)"

Mar 3, 2008, 8:06am Top

My reported bug.

I also want to report an other bug: I filled in my location, and I had the option to check if I wanted to show it also in my profile. I didn't checked it, because I wanted to keep the location in my profile vague. But nevertheless the location in my profile is edited with the location I filled in in LT Local.

Mar 3, 2008, 8:07am Top

SC: What venue are you on when you do it? What's the URL that comes up?

Mar 3, 2008, 8:12am Top

I go the intro page of LT Local and click on 'add an event'. There it goes wrong. With the second option, it goes wrong when I click on the pencil next to 'your location' on the LT Local intro page.

Mar 3, 2008, 8:16am Top

>3 royalhistorian:

Fixed. Apologies. In general, the public and private location needs to be more clearly presented, so people understand you have both a profile location—that anyone can see—and a LT Local location.

>5 royalhistorian:

I need the URL it goes to. Also, are you signed in?

Mar 3, 2008, 8:20am Top

This is the URL. I guess it misses a parameter/ID.

And yes, I am logged in ;)

Mar 3, 2008, 8:27am Top

1) Not really a bug but performance is a bit slow.

2) In Local Members I see "Tudorrl. Nr Manchester, England;" which is nowhere near me. All the other members are reasonably local - some just list a county so could be over the distance I specify but I guess you are including them to be on the safe side.

Mar 3, 2008, 8:33am Top

The "Venues Near You" doesn't let you select just bookstores or just libraries when you're on a search page (i.e.: http://www.librarything.com/local/place/60304 ).

Works fine when it's displaying results for my "home" location.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 8:51am Top

Ah, yes. Where did you click to get that?

Yeah, geocoding fails sometimes.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 8:56am Top

#10, I click the link add events on the LT Local intro page, beneath 'upcoming local events'.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:03am Top

>11 royalhistorian:

Aha! Okay, that shouldn't have been there. For now at least, you need to add events from venue pages. We may change this in the future, but it would still require a searching process, because no drop-down list is going to hold 2,700 venues...

Mar 3, 2008, 9:04am Top

I'm not seeing any way to change my home location. No mater what I put in my profile, Zipcode or city/state, Local thinks I am in Boston.

#13, Fleela, Go to LT local, on the intro page on the left, you can change your location.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:07am Top

I think it doesn't change it unless you force it to be public.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:12am Top

Ok, I think I'm having an issue because I'm using FF Beta 3. Will switch over to check.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 9:17am Top

Hm. I still don't see a way to change location with FF What I see is this -

LibraryThing Local
Your location

then a list of venues.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:21am Top

I changed the units to kilometres, but the event search stays in miles.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 9:22am Top

Fleela, You don't see a pencil to edit?

Mar 3, 2008, 9:24am Top

No images/graphics at all except the Google map.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:30am Top

Re the bugette I mentioned before about the incorrect location of the KB - it's not a geocoding issue, it's just missing data in their map database. I fixed it by editing the KB data to remove the street address (Google knows where the library is, but not the street), and added another location in The Hague.

Incidentally, html markup in the location name produces a non-working link to the location page - the person who made the KB location used tags.

Mar 3, 2008, 9:35am Top

Now with IE, I can see the pencil icon to edit my location. So an issue with FF?

Mar 3, 2008, 9:40am Top

Cross posting from the BETA group;

ok, I think there are not too many Chinese members here in LT, so I will start trying if it works with simp.chinese characters too.

edited to say: It looks like it is not working. i can add all the information and it saves fine, but when I want to open the bookshop information from the local page, I get a 404 error

the link is: Daofeng Books

Perhaps I have to stick to pinyin instead, even this would be a huge trouble

Edited 2: I forgot to say: When i put in the address in characters, the positioning on the map worked pretty well (only 50km wrong), so probably it can deal with characters in some way

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 1:11pm Top

Opening the edit screen for an event loses the "Doing" and "Date" values, reverting to "reads from" (first in the list
0 and 1 January 2008 (again, first value in each list) respectively. Seen in FF3B3 & IE7, so I don't think it's a browser issue.

Also, I'm not sure if this'd be better off in a new thread in RSI, but the choices of event types are a bit limited; often an author will do a reading and a signing, for example, but we can currently only choose one or the other.

EDIT: Editing an event also loses any authors beyond the first.

(edited @ 1:11 PM for typo fixes)

Okay, I wanted to search for Donnell Library Center to see if it's still listed twice, and search isn't pulling anything up... no matter what I search for.

I even tried "bookshop"... nothing.

(And how do we get rid of double listings? Is there a system to prevent this thing from happening? I seem to have added Bullpen Comics & Cards twice, possibly due to sleep deprivation.)

Mar 3, 2008, 11:20am Top

>26 J_ipsen:

No, we can fix links to bookstores with Chinese characters. I'll get on it. Don't resort to Pinyin.

>27 ATimson:

That's troubling. I'll look at it.

What if the final option were "edit" and you could add your own phrase, so long as it fit the grammatical context?

Okay, I wanted to search for Donnell Library Center to see if it's still listed twice, and search isn't pulling anything up... no matter what I search for.

Did you add it?

I'll add a way to delete venues. Combining is a nightmare.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 11:32am Top

No, I think alibrarian added Donnell, I just noticed it since I was filling in NYC bookstores and it was usually on the list of nearby places... twice.

I just searched for "Midtown Comics" and its not working for me... and I know that's in the system, because it's in my favorite places.

And as for duplicates... cool, because I've noticed a few (like both alibrarian and I added Bookoff but didn't realize it because we both wrote it differently).

Okay, in an effort to be more helpful, this is what I get when I search for anything (in this case, BOOKOFF):

Still no pencil edit icon for home location on FF/Vista:

Mar 3, 2008, 11:42am Top

Also how does the distance thingy work? In the previous example I would expect to find the location I entered for Peterborough (the library post code PE1 1RX). The distance from London is 80 miles by rail, 90 by road. Even google maps gives 94 miles by road (it doesn't take the shortest route).

Mar 3, 2008, 11:46am Top

Yay, thanks Tim, search seems to be working!

Now, here's another one that bothered me over the weekend:

I added an event with multiple authors, but one of the names was dropped and when I try to add it back in, only the first author is being listed and the others are missing from the edit page. Based on my experiences editing another event (Peter David at Midtown Comics) I think this would end up overwriting the old data.. which is a real pain in the ass.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 12:47pm Top

Ah! I bet that is it. I would change it if I could get to the page. Looks like Tim may have to modify the title or fix to allow "/".

Mar 3, 2008, 12:42pm Top

When I erase my location and leave it blank, it doesn't stick. Once I leave local and return again, the location reverts back to Boston. Is there anything I can do besides actually put in a location if I want to leave it blank for now?

Mar 3, 2008, 12:44pm Top

I've found it helps to take the name out of the URL, which will take you to the venue page, then just change the slash to a dash so the URL will always work.

Mar 3, 2008, 12:47pm Top

>43 tcgardner: So, as lampbane said, go here and you can edit to change the / to -

Is there any way to make Montreal and Montréal the same location? I entered a couple of bookshops in Montreal and then noticed that it still says there are no venues in my location because I'm in Montréal...

>36 DaynaRT:

You live in squiggle too?!

I added an event with multiple authors, but one of the names was dropped and when I try to add it back in, only the first author is being listed and the others are missing from the edit page.

I think it only keeps the author if there was a book with him/her. Did you have one?

that an entry will include our own username

But so much on the site works that way. Hmmmmm.

Can the one without be deleted??

I need to get venue deletion working.

Bristol library

But http://www.librarything.com/venue/2717 works. Clearly our URL structure is messed up. I'll rectify.

>41 tcgardner: I think it's because you have a "/" in the name?

Right. I'll fix. I thought it was encoding it. It isn't.

When I erase my location and leave it blank, it doesn't stick. Once I leave local and return again, the location reverts back to Boston. Is there anything I can do besides actually put in a location if I want to leave it blank for now?

We're fixing.

It's not a combination issue. It's a geocoding issue. Montréal is nowhere, according to Google. This is probably a character set issue in how we tell Google where stuff is. It's on our radar.

Mar 3, 2008, 1:46pm Top

I do live in Squiggle! AND I can see the pencil icon in FF/XP. Vista and FF look like the culprits.

Edited: Mar 6, 2008, 10:41am Top

Yeah, that's why I used Montreal when I entered the venues, because I had a feeling Google Maps didn't recognize the accents. I can work with that, it's just that I'm attached to using the accents on my profile but want to be linked to the Montreal venues somehow... Glad to hear it's on your radar anyway. And I might just have to change my profile in the meantime.

Thanks for all your hard work; I love this site and this new feature has just given me the opportunity for hours more of LibraryThing-ing!

Edited to add: It took me a while to figure out that what appears on my profile doesn't have to be the same location as appears on LibraryLocal!

I added a library - main building. How do I add a branch of the same library?
Is there a way to move the pointer a bit or place it anywhere on a map when it cannot find the right place?
What language should I use when adding non-English places?

Mar 3, 2008, 2:38pm Top

Just like Anneli (#21), I've set the distance unit to kilometres, and it's still using miles.

Also, there's no way to finetune locations on the map when Google Maps doesn't get it quite right.

It's a lovely feature, though. Thank. :-)

University of Minnesota (St. Paul) - Magrath Library
University of Minnesota (West Bank) - Wilson Library

Chris will eventually make a way to set the "dot" manually. It would be easiest if it were a pure lat/long thing, not a UI.

How do I add a branch of the same library?

We've been doing them as separate venues, eg., Boston Public Library - So and so Branch.

Mar 3, 2008, 3:05pm Top

A venue was entered without a name. Since the name is what makes the link, there's no link to get to the venue (and correct it!). It should have been Black Oak Books - I found that out by checking the address - but without a link I can't get to it. I left a comment for the person who entered it, maybe he can get back to it, but there should be a way to access it. Same thing on the map - the only actual link is the name.

Maybe a default of a space or a question mark if there's no name (just to make a link)? Or make the address linkable as well. Or something.

This bug is already known by Tim and Chris, but I'm adding it here so that others know that it's known and is being worked on.

If there is more than one venue with the same address only one shows up on the venue listing. If there is an event in a non-showing venue, it does not show up either.

>50 timspalding:

I'm pretty sure I did, as each author was listed with a comics title on the event flyer.

>61 Talbin:

I think I prefer to have different locations of the same chain differentiated as well, since it does make it easier to search *and* the location name is part of the store's identity.

(Also, it's a lot tidier looking if venues follow a "style" persay, though it's a pain in the ass to enforce. My general rule is to write it the way it's on the store's website.)

Mar 3, 2008, 4:17pm Top

The distance selector (over the map) doesn't seem to work at all (this may be related to the location problems). I have SF Bay Area as my profile location, which is fine. The distance is set to 5 miles - but places 10 miles away are in the list and showing on the map. Well, I want to see more - so I set it to 50 miles and Search. Neither list nor map change. I can change the distance by changing my location with the pencil icon (which shows up at http://www.librarything.com/local/ but not on http://www.librarything.com/local/place/SF%20Bay%20Area)

I love LOVE LTLocal.

I did try to edit an event, and I was able to click on the edit pencil icon no problem. But, the event page opened, and the title had been erased and replaced with "/" and the date of the event had been reset to January 1. The time was still correct. I was able to retype and reset the date and it saved OK. But, others may go to edit and reset their dates and not realize it.

I added a description to a bookstore, and then tried to delete it because it was text I stole from the website, which I think is a copyright issue. When I tried to delete all the text in the description and clicked submit changes, the save didn't take. I had to write something else in the description in order to delete the previous one.

Oh and every time I try to edit, it adds more backslash characters before the apostrophe. I'll leave them in for now to show you what I mean.

Edited to fix the backslash

I love this feature! Seems like every time I come back for a visit there is something new and fun to play with. I could get used to this:-)

Not sure if this counts as a bug but I noticed that people have used "SF Bay Area", "SF Bay Area, California", "Bay Area, California" for the same location but it seems for each of the three has a different local page. Is there a way to combine the three?

SF Bay Area covers a large area including cities and specific zip codes. Any bookstore/library entered for a specific location can also be useful for the more general area. Is this sort of combining planned?

Mar 3, 2008, 5:34pm Top

Really like this. The Google Map doesn't seem to be putting things in quite the right place though. I added Brighton Jubilee Library (http://www.librarything.com/venue/4099/Jubilee-Library) and it's placed it slightly wrongly. The postcode is BN1 1GE and you can see where it's supposed to be at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bn1+1ge&ie=UTF8...

The Brighton Waterstone's (http://www.librarything.com/venue/3523/Waterstone%27s) is also out by a few hundred metres.

Edited: Mar 3, 2008, 5:52pm Top

Not much we can do about bad geocodes except add our own geocoding, which we are going to do eventually.

Venues that have the exact same location will now show up on lists together. Sorry about that. It was a problem in some deep geocoding table logic. Took me a while to find it.

The only problem is that because it was a data problem and not a display problem you will have to go to the missing venue, edit it, and save it (no need to change anything). That will actually add the location to the database. You can probably get to the venue via a "by name" search. If not, let me know and I'll fix them by hand later tonight.

Mar 3, 2008, 6:06pm Top

Okay, no matter how many times I edit this, the system will not get the message that the event is at 12 AM (not PM, yes, the event is at midnight):

Small glitch with venues with the same address. Under Your Favorites, if I sort the venues by name, venues with the same address show correctly. If I sort by distance, one of the venues disappears. That happens with two favorite-ed venues with the same address. I added three with the same address, and all three show up in the sort by name, but only two show up in the sort by distance. All of these have been re-edited since the change to fix multiple venues at one address. Weird.

The systems appears utterly unable to handle French street names having a "de" in their name. In many cases, actually including the "rue", "boulevard", "avenue" etc. part, although working in the google map preview, will not actually show up on the map.

This makes me wonder how the system can handle cases like "Rue Georges-V" and "Avenue Georges-V", both in Montreal. Such cases are fairly common in my home province, and used to be thirteen a dozen (not always with a difference in generic, there were at least seven "rue des érables") until recently in Quebec City, when they changed most of them.

see e.g. venues #4449, 4443 (both cases of "de") and 4408 (removing "rue" didn't help last I checked)

Not sure if this is a bug, but it'd be nice to be able to add permanent events to a bookstore. Things like children's storytime is every Saturday. (If there's already an option for that, I can't find it - all I can do is add a specific date, and I don't have time to update it every week.

Just a couple of minor data entry queries.

I have added 4 local (to me) libraries and looking at the addresses they don't look like ones I would write. The reason is that addresses in the suburbs of a city tend only to have the suburb name listed (the Postcode would differentiate between two suburbs of the same name in two different cities). How is this done in other countries? Would it make sense to change the City box to City/Suburb?

How should phone numbers be entered? International "+cc ac number" format or "(ac) number" {or however the country in question normally formats them}?

I would guess it was. I've actually seen much weirder things happen for addresses in Japan: I filled in some addresses up until the point of the zip-code, and the location was completely correct, then I changed the country from the US to Japan and it suddenly couldn't find the location anymore.

I more and more would to like be able to overrule the whole address thing with coordinates, especially because I'm also seeing that the location code is sometimes a few blocks off.

Is the Local Members section for a location not meant to be comprehensive? For example, I don't see myself or say, bookslut or even lilithcat listed as Local Members even though we all have "Chicago, IL" listed in our Profile pages Location field.

Mar 4, 2008, 1:04am Top

> 113

Oh, I think I know what it is.

I had listed my actual address on the LT Local page, but chose not to check the "Use in profile" box. I think the Local Members section uses the location from the Home page, not the profile, so if you keep that location private, you won't show up. I just changed my location on the Local page back to "Chicago, IL" and checked the "Use in profile" box, and now I do show on the LM list.

Mar 4, 2008, 1:09am Top

You can override your public address in your profile with a private address on your local page, so I imagine that the others have added a private address of some suburb of Chicago.

Mar 4, 2008, 1:20am Top

110: Yes, that's what you hit. It wasn't so much a collision as a duplicate key (the address was already in the database). I'm messing with the code and lifted the duplicate key check. That will be fixed in a little while.

We're working on a system of public/private location for Local and LT profile. Expect something in the next day or so. We're also going to rethink some of the public/private display issues in Local. We haven't had a huge outcry but we want to make everyone comfortable about using the system.

Multiple authors bug.

If multiple authors are reading from different books; you get:
Author 1 reads from Title 1.; Author 2 reads from Title 2.; Author 3 reads from Title 3.

But if they are co-authors, the result is strange:
Author 1 reads from Title 1.; Author 2
Or, if you enter the title again, you get:
Author 1 reads from Title 1.; Author 2 reads from Title 1

Note that in all cases, an extraneous period is added before each semicolon.

ETA: Authors display properly if you list them as: Author1 and Author 2, but then they try to link to a combined author on LT.

A more recent example is I've entered a number of Paris bookshops tonight. And although I can search for and fine librairie Eyrolles, it does not appear on the page that's called up when I input Paris in search by location.

Mar 4, 2008, 5:25am Top

120: The reason that some of the venues are not on the maps is because they don't have good geolocation information (lat/long values). This happens sometimes if the geocoding services can't place the address.

If you know the name of a venue it's always good to search for the name.

I'll be adding a way to set the location for venues that are not geolocated correctly based on their address.

121:If you can give examples of the Bristol locations I might be able to figure out what's going on there.

As far as the member connections.... it could be that some addresses are getting a Bristol, Connecticut, USA location as opposed to Bristol, UK...or the reverse. But that's just a quick guess. I'll have to look closer to figure it out for sure.

Unfortunately, geocoding is a lot of voodoo.

re>95 AntiLeah:, I am still having issues with good old Nameless Venue. Even though I unfavorited it on Nameless Venue's individual venue page (http://www.librarything.com/venue/4381/%28Nameless-venue%29), and it doesn't show up on my Your Faves page, it still shows up with the star yellow instead of gray when I search by location and it covers up the Dot of Annie Bloom's when I am looking at the map of my area.

Is this the type of case where we should just edit this venue to be a real venue, or should I leave it alone until you implement the deleting of venues. It is kind of fun to have a phantom venue on my list, but not really practical in the long term ;)

Mar 4, 2008, 2:02pm Top

Yes, they are geocoding problems. All I did for Eyrolles was edit the venue, notice that it had a better location, and save. (Some new geocoding modifications that I made have added better support for Europe in general).

We can't (officially) get access to the database that Google maps uses. The geocoding service that they provide doesn't give great results outside the US. I've kind of worked around that a little bit by using multiple geocoding services but even that has its limitations. We'll get manual lat/long editing soon.

Mar 4, 2008, 2:06pm Top

Thanks Tim and Concept.

I went in and edited another one that wasn't showing. This time I went to Google maps, found it, then copied Google's address for it (comparing the two addresses, mine and Google's, I can't see any difference). When I edited the location with the address I copied from gmaps, it showed up without a hitch.

thanks for your help.

Mar 4, 2008, 2:35pm Top

With my new fixes to the geocoder you can usually just hit "edit venue" and then hit save. There are a lot of addresses that it finds now that it wasn't finding earlier and it re-geocodes when you save the edit venue page.

(Not sure how that happened, unless someone checked to see if the store had been added and found it that way.) This is great if someone adds it as a favorite, but it's a shame it can't be seen on the local page.

>168 kd9:

I don't think ConceptDawg was trying to slur your OS, kd9. He was simply looking for a little more to go on. Asking for your browser and OS is a standard starting point.

The theory that it was your location that was causing it to spin was an interesting one, so I tried pulling up Maui and Nevada venues. Neither had any venues yet, but they didn't spin endlessly for me either. I tried it on both Firefox and Safari 3.0.4 (beta for Windows) on XP.

I don't know if the extra information from me makes any difference at all, but it can't hurt. Good luck in your bug smashing. I know how frustrating it can be.

Edited: Mar 5, 2008, 5:52pm Top

168 I'm sorry I got under your skin by asking for your browser and OS but since you didn't give me any information in your original post it's a valid question. You could have been using an iPhone to browse using Mobile WebKit and I would have then said, "it hasn't been verified on that platform, it could be a problem."

As it is, you are running a very common platform (the one that I used during development of Local), so that is most likely not the issue. The areas at which you are looking are also not a problem (as noted by another member).

So now I'm going to ask another question that may get under your skin: do you connect through a proxy server?

The fact that you are seeing NOTHING doesn't give me much to go on, hence the annoying questions. Of course it could be a system problem with your DNS cache on your local OS X box. I've had that before too. Also a keychain problem, I've had that one also.

Mar 5, 2008, 6:11pm Top

>171 conceptDawg: - kd9's location in his profile is listed as "Nevada and Maui." Since Local is taking the profile location (until it's edited in Local), perhaps this is what's causing the problem?

>168 kd9: - Have you tried changing your location in Local? Go to the edit pencil and type in a location. As you could probably guess, it doesn't like "Nevada and Maui" - you need to enter one or the other for it to work. (I also understand that LT is working on multiple locations for Local, but it probably won't happen immediately.)

Mar 5, 2008, 6:54pm Top

I posted this first with regular bugs, but now here, too, with local feature bugs. The problem may be entirely Local feature based.

I added a new title to LibraryThings last night, 3/4/08 -- i.e. there was a Worldcat record for it, but before I added it last night, there was no record (owners) on LibraryThing. I added the title because I wanted to add an event to the new "Local" feature. The event is a book discussion taking place in one of my local libraries, sponsored by an organization (AAUW) where I serve on the Board. I added the book to my library, then the event to the "Palos Verdes Library District - Peninsula Center Library" venue for March 26th, 2008. This is in the Los Angeles area, Palos Verdes is the place.

PROBLEM/BUG: 1) I cannot get a hyperlink for the book on the event page, 2) I get a crazy wrong hyperlink for the author, and 3) I cannot search for the title on the overall search page using many different search approaches. I can only retrieve the title via searching my own library.

I would like to link the book to the local venue announcement. Can anyone help?

The book is: "Gumboots, Lesson Plans And Hot Rugby Nights: New Beginnings in New Zealand" by J. A. Flynn

I see "multiple locations" were introduced since I last checked?

Code behind this is far from okay though: If I do a find venues on "Sendai, Japan" I get three of these yellow dots, only one of which is correct, the others are actually venues that are a few blocks from each other:

* Shimin Library - Sendai Mediatheque (市民図書館) and Sendai Mediatheque (せんだいメディアテーク) are in the same building, so that's correct.

* Ayumi Books - Sendai Aobadori (あゆみブックス - 仙台青葉通店) and Mazuren - Sendai 141 (丸善 - 仙台141店) are roughly a km from each other.

* Taihaku Library (太白図書館) and Books Kinokuniya - The Mall Sendai (紀伊國屋書店 - ザ・マッル仙台) are roughly half a km from each other.

I added a few events and I believe I've found a limit to the website address for the event.

The local library has switched to a rather unfortunate web design, so the author event they have coming up is addressed as such:

Edited out super-long URL- you'll see how long it is when you click on it.

I tried to force the link Event Webpage myself and found out that the main problem was that the URL was far too long for the box.

I went without since it wasn't that critical, but in case anyone else hires the same web design team, thought I'd throw it out there.

When I put in the too-long URL , it didn't convert over to the "Event Webpage" link and squished the right-hand side of the page so that all locations were virtually unreadable.

Mar 5, 2008, 10:11pm Top

You can strip out most of the URL, the end is just to retain your settings. The following URL gets you to the same location:

1 and 3 are caching issues. With 24 million books and 3 million titles, we don't update the "global" layer with each change to the individual layer. If you want to insert HTML into your description, you could force a link.

175 re:Code behind this is far from okay though
Actually the code is fine. Those venues are all referencing the same lat/long coordinates. For example:
Shimin Library & Sendai Mediatheque
38.2663 lat, 140.865 long

Unfortunately the maps can only be as good as the geocoding. I don't know enough to be able to reposition those locations based on small changes to the addresses.

I'll have manual positioning working as fast as I can.

Local Members - too much with the local

If I am looking at Portland venues and I click on Local Members, I see members who have self-identified as being in the Portland area. Right, exactly what you might expect.

But suppose I search for another location, say Chicago, and I am looking at bookstores in that area. Now, if I click on Local Members, I get....those same old Portland people. No! I am tired of them!

If I am looking at Chicago bookstores, then I want to know which members are in the Chicago area. Not for stalking, but if I am planning to travel there, it might be nice to contact a name or two that I recognize and ask them to recommend a restaurant or whatever.

Edited: Mar 6, 2008, 12:16am Top

The library and Mediatheque is correct, that's what I wrote. The other two pairs are not. Actually, when I looked at the other two on the map before this change, and with the most detailed zoom, the dots now combined in the other two were actually quite far apart, so definitely not the same coordinates.

Aargh, okay, I'm pretty sure that what I wrote was correct, but now when I go through the location process again the last two pairs actually do yield the same coordinates...

Button to confirm event should be labeled "Submit".

The button is currently labeled "Add Event", which makes sense when you are first adding the event, but not if you have to go back and edit it.

Also - this is actually a recommended improvement and not a bug. But we should encourage bookstores to list their events with individual URLs, as is done by Sunriver Books. Set up this way, events can be entered very quickly and accurately. Best of all, they take up very little space on the LT Local screen.

>184 conceptDawg: - re local members at "special" locations - OK, that sounds good. I am just throwing things in here as I find them. That way, you can take a look and decide if they are "bugs" or "features.

Regarding multiple venues at the same location, I've noticed a strange (though understandable) behaviour.
Try clicking on the yellow marker for Split 21000 in Croatia
The height of the venue box rolls the map up so that you're no longer anywhere near the location in question.
I'm not sure how you would get around this though, unless you were to bring the pop-up box outside the map, or adjust the depth of the map...

Problem adding a library in the UK: does not appear on map.

I find I have managed to add the Norfolk & Norwich Millenium Library twice, but neither venue appears on the map. I suspect this is because, when I entered the city (Norfolk), the picklist assumed it was in the US. I changed the country after entering the city, and all appeared to be well; the entry I set as a favourite does appear in my favourites, but the map shows the centre of the Pacific (and no blue dot).

Mar 6, 2008, 10:25am Top

I corrected the Norfold & Norwich details. It could not find the location because of "The Millenium Plain" in the address. Removing that from the address field allowed the geocoder to find a valid address. You might check to see that it is the right address though.

I also removed the word "The" from the beginning of the title. Not needed and it allows the venue to sort correctly in alphabetized lists (which are coming...you can already alpha sort your favorites list).

Logos or official photos of the school or library would need someone in charge to say ok. I would start with the head of the library (big library systems may even have special people or offices to deal with - it depends, just start with someone who seems to be in charge to ask)

There is a basic permission letter for authors you can tweak if you have to send an e-mail to someone to get permission.

(See for example Foyles, http://www.librarything.com/venue/3259/Foyles, which should be up the street from where its dot appears, exactly opposite the Borders at 122 Charing Cross Road.)

I'm leaving the event up for now:

I've tried to add this event about 4 times. The event does not take place today - it takes place in October. The first time I added it (with ALL speakers - which disappear if you edit them, by the by), it showed up as taking place today.

No problem, I thought, perhaps I was so busy entering everything else, I put in the wrong date. Tried to edit the date to October 25th (real start date instead of VIP preview) and the edit wouldn't change the date. Deleted the event and started over - was sure I put in the October date.

Local still shows the event taking place today.

Deleted, decided I didn't feel like entering all the speakers again and just entered the 1st date. Still taking place today, not October 24th for the 1st date. Editing doesn't work again (I put in the date, save and it's still March 9th).

Deleted again, started over again (no guests for speed of entry), decided to have husband observe that I was, in fact, putting in October 24th as the date and - ta-dah - it's still taking place today.

Not sure what's up, as I'd successfully entered the Toy & Comic show for the same venue with no authors a bit earlier:

I am on FireFox on Windows XP.

For example, see this event, which should be titled Babies in the Library.

This is a new issue; I previously entered non-author events with no problems.

#268: I can set the date as late as 31 September (which is automatically translated to 1 October upon saving) on that event; it's any date actually in October that's causing issues. Maybe LT limits the ability to list months more than six months ahead of time?

I'm having problems with disappearing book titles in events. I entered a whole slew of events for this bookstore on Friday, and while they correctly showed the works the authors were discussing a few days ago, many now just say "Mira Kamdar discusses ." or "Eugenia Lovett West promotes ." Has something been changed this morning regarding Fairs/Festivals? Last night, I entered at least a dozen rather detailed Book Sales for the Chicago Local Homepage after reading comments from ConceptDawg last week that Fair/Festivals was also intended for booksales. Now when I click on the Fair/Festival link only the two that other users created for "actual" fairs show up. It took quite a long time to look up and write in urls, emails, links to directions, sale hours, etc. Anyone?

The things I am talking about were from late last night and were entered as Venues and then from there, denoted as "Fair/Festivals", i.e., "Friends of Rolling Meadow Library: 2008 Spring Book Sale" Based on comments in the general LTL thread, I was under the impression that this is how we were supposed to create booksales because it allows for a date range and also because conceptdawg said at one point that Fair/Festival was meant to also encompass sales and the like.

I tried searching this thread for this bug, sorry if I missed it.

This happens upon editing an event.

I'm trying to edit this event. After going in and making a change, and then saving the edit, the venue page ceases to show the associated title (see here) - it now simply says, "Sonia Nazario reads from ." with the title missing.

So I went back in, and tried loading the titles again, using the "look up" button next to the author field, but that button no longer looks anything up - it doesn't bring up any titles, and does not allow me to edit the title that is there.

OK, I can save new events now, and they seem to stick. But the details of what the author's doing (reading from/promoting/signing/etc), and which book they're doing it to, aren't being saved. (All of the events for http://www.librarything.com/venue/16224/Topping-%26-Company had books associated when I entered them.)

Another example of the geocoding issues I'm getting in London:

Ocean Books, 127 Stoke Newington Church Street

Church Street Bookshop, 142 Stoke Newington Church Street

Are maybe five storefronts away from each other, on opposite sides of the street. Yet one (Ocean) codes to the correct location, while the other (Church Street) codes to 1/3 of a mile away, down the road and around the corner on Church Walk.

I'm hesitant to enter more venues because I don't like the idea of having the pointers in the wrong places, but I imagine they'll be fixable if the geocoding gets tinkered with a bit?

Okay, I've pretty much confirmed it (for myself) that the system has problems with the midnight hour. I'm entering events for Lunacon and no matter how many times I make the correction, it won't accept that there are events taking place at 12AM and 12:30AM (they keep reverting to 12PM).

My undertsanding is that you're supposed to use the "Add Venue then mark as Fair/Festival" functionality for multi-day book events, i.e., the expositions you mentioned as well as things like Book Sales. If you read the LTLocal general thread that was started last week, conceptdawg posted that "Fair/Festival" marker was meant for those things but also sales, conventions, etc. For naming/space practicalities though they couldn't call the marker Fair/Festival/Booksale/Expo/Etc/Etc/Etc---the list of possible multi-day events could go on and on.

Nevertheless, I'd still like my issue in 319 addressed so that LTL members can see current book sales and the like that were technically created as Venues in their list of upcoming local Events. :-)

Mar 12, 2008, 8:01pm Top

>322 timspalding:

What I meant was, when I created an event for a venue, and clicked "clone this event" from a column, I did not realise that I needed to edit the venue: I thought it would copy only the relevant elements because the venue is "pregenerated" when you load the "create event" page. I had not noticed until then that the venue could be edited, in fact.

My original concern is not a bug per se (I tried to strike it, but it didn't work), but I do think it is a bit counterintuitive (but it's probably too late to change that already).

A real bug, though: non-ASCII (I think. my accented chars in any way) characters in event names (but not authors etc.) get mangled when cloning or editing an event.

Mar 12, 2008, 9:37pm Top

#324: It looks like characters are being stored as Unicode in the database, and it's being assumed that they're Latin-1 when they're being pulled out for the edit field.

This thread is huge, so I'm very sorry if this has already been brought up.

Mar 13, 2008, 12:00am Top

If not here, it was mentioned in another thread. Currently, for some reason, events cannot be added with dates past the end of September. (You can choose 31 September, which will be "corrected" to 1 October upon saving, but you edit it the 1 October will default back to the current date.

Ok, using the "edit pen" I can choose a distance and change miles to kilometres. As I click save, it'll use the distance selected in miles, ignore the kilometres setting, and after a reload, it will have forgotten the distance and revert back to 15 miles, which seems to be the default.

Mar 18, 2008, 6:44am Top

There seems to be a problem with authors if their event is announced before any LT'er has added his/her book. Example: Eckart von Hirschhausen will be reading from Die Leber wächst mit ihren Aufgaben on May 30th in the Mayersche Buchhandlung in Aachen, Germany; but as nobody has ever added one of his books, somethings goes wrong with his author page. His name will be given as 'vonhirschhauseneckar' instead of 'Eckart von Hirschhausen', and this will not change if you start adding books either. Also, he will not be listed as an author, e.g. you will not be able to search him.
Is there any possibility to change this?

Reviving an old thread, but there are a couple of things I don't get or that seem incorrect.

First, I disagree with apple2e in >214 apple2e:. If you look at a map and measure distances as the crow flies, the 1.6 multiplication matches. It doesn't match with the distance I am used to think I have to travel to these places, but I travel by roads, not in the air. All distances pretending to be in kilometres are actually in miles for me. So the km setting does nothing except fool me.

Second, the venue listing is wonky. Regardless of what distance I have selected under Find venues, whenever I click another filter than All, the list will contain only venues up to a fixed distance. For Bookstores, that distance is just a few miles (masquerading as km, see above) -- I don't know exactly how many because there are no bookstores between 2 and 25 miles away. For Libraries, that distance is 25 miles (so probably it's the same for Bookstores). Whenever I select a new distance and click Search, the filter reverts to show All venues.

Whatever the desired behavior is here, the result is that I cannot filter to show all bookstores, and only bookstores, located up to 50 miles away. That must be considered a bug.

Win XP, FF 3.5.5 and IE 8.0.6 (same behavior)

More problems with location. When I type in Beijing it only brings up two bookstores. When I search for venue by name and include Beijing (as part of the name naturally) it brings up four more. They all have Beijing as their address but their not showing.

Any suggestions and how to get the two Beijing pages merged into one?

Make sure the Beijing ones have addresses that "work"—that the locations update on the map. I wouldn't be surprised if, for some, Google just gave up. Their non-US data isn't always the best.

I saw more than two when I searched on Beijing. What distance setting were you using?

Ah. That might be it. I need to change that. I think the UI was wrong. It should show the closest X, not those within X.

What you really need is a way to make more venues appear as you scroll, rather than showing a fixed amount from the beginning. Geocaching.com does this.

I had a similar problem with Guam earlier this week.

Also, why is it that some venues don't seem to show up in the "by country"? I think it lists only 1 bookstore in Puerto Rico when I know I put in at least 2.

I just added two very important libraries in Vienna. One is the main library of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. There, the location, works just fine. The second is the library of the Museum für Völkerkunde. It has over 180,000 books on cultural anthropology and ethnology. It is open to the public, has modern facilities, etc. etc. But the map puts it right in front of the Opera House! I have given the address of Neue Burg and added Burggartenseite (the entrance is on the Garden side and not through the main entrance). Neue Burg (New palace/castle) is the part of the Hofburg added in the 1870s. Since the Hofburg complex has over 4,000 rooms and streches for several blocks in middle of the city, Neue Burg is correct and gives users a hint of where it is located. Google maps show the Hofburg in great detail and I can see on the map exactly where the entrance of the library is located.

But it is not in front of the Opera House. What to do?

greetings from Vienna, John

I fixed some of my problems with Beijing and Dalian (but not all of them) by entering the address I used into Google Maps then when the map appeared with the location marker copying the address that appeared with the location marker and using this. In the majority of cases this fixed the problem. I'm not sure why, because the addresses looked the same to me but Google seems to think they're different.

I should also point out, from what I've been told and read, this is a Google maps problem and not a LT problem.

Thanks LIAO!

Well I went back to the Google Map, entered there Burggarten. With luck, the marker, is only a few meters from the entrance of the library and a hell of a lot closer than the previous "in front of the opera house". Then I went back and changed the address in the library to Burggarten. Then I added directions in the description of the library. I cannot imagine anyone getting lost now.

Many many thanks.

I moved cities, so I updated the zip code that LT has for Local.

* Now, when I click on the Local tab, I get events and locations for my new zipcode, but when I look at my homepage, the Local widget still displays events for my old zipcode.

* If I click the pencil for the Local widget on my home page, the form that pops up has my new, correct, zipcode, but when I save that, the page still displays the old zipcode.

Is this a bug, or something I can fix?

cmeckhardt, there are two places where you set your location; you need to set both of them the same to fix this. One is on your profile, and the other is in Local itself. Sounds like you only changed the one in Local.

ETA: Anyone can see the one on your profile, but the one in Local is private, so you can set it more precisely, if you wish not to advertise where you are located.

Yeahhhh...but if that's so, the fact that the Local widget on the homepage draws not from Local but from your profile is a bug in itself. Or at least a highly unexpected response. It's supposed to be a quick-access representation of Local...
