"I have at least three days without any obligations whatsoever, and I intend to stay in, order pizza, stop answering the door, stop answering the phone, stop writing on Talk, and even—gasp!—stop answering email. I may even put one of those "vacation auto-reply" messages up. After three days, I hope I have something."

Stop peeking, Tim.

The place in 3, doesn't render very nicely on IE8 beta 1 in IE7 emulation mode. All covers end up the same line instead of being divided over multiple lines. Dunno if this is particular to the emulation more or that the same happens in the real IE7.

Beautiful work, LT Crew! This is what CK was meant to be. :-D

Yay! Characters related to a series! As a Doctor Who geek, I can now go through and check on the consistant usage of 377 different characters!

Is it sad that this makes me happy?

Aug 11, 2008, 10:15am Top

Oh. :(

What are the chances of getting character disambiguation pages?

The Doctor occurs in 524 works. In most cases, this is the Doctor from Doctor Who (these are easy to pick out: they'll have a number in the right hand column explaining which Doctor),

However, a few of them are entirely different "Doctor"s, from some other source: Startrek Voyager, , Stormwatch

Presumably there must be similar issues with Mr. Smith (oh. There aren't. Turns out there are very few people just known as Smith!) But you get the idea!

Issues in IE display with covers all appearing in one long line as mentioned above. Also the links to related series, characters etc are being "covered" by the link's status bar.

Aug 11, 2008, 11:41am Top

I noticed that Series information appears to have disappeared from Author pages. Is this at all intentional or related to the update?

Aug 11, 2008, 11:44am Top

This is lovely (I mean it, it really is) but I've always wondered, what about characters whose names change? They're still the same person (or character, whatever), but they end up listed as different ones.

The example I can give is from Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness series and other related books - the main character starts off as Alanna of Trebond, becomes Alanna of Trebond and Olau, and ends up as Alanna the Lioness (which she is known as in all the other books).

Will there ever be a way to link those names together?

Aug 11, 2008, 12:09pm Top

> 11

I think the usual (I don't know if it's the "approved" way) is to list the canonical version of the character name, and then put the appropriate modifiers in parenthesis (which are then ignored for comparison purposes).

Alanna (of Trebond)
Alanna (of Trebond and Olau)
Alanna (the Lioness)

or something similar. I'm not sure what would be the best way of dealing with it in this case, because I dislike breaking her name like that. But it would work.

Alanna the Lioness (Alanna of Trebond)
Alanna the Lioness (Alanna of Trebond and Olau)
Alanna the Lioness

That's my question too. Looking at books linked to Faerie, I found that Smith of Wooton Major was not there, due to its being linked to Faery. While I have added Faerie to Smith of Wooton Major, this is clearly a place where combining needs to happen!

Sorry Tim et al - the reward for a job well done is another job, they say ...

It has not disappeared. It is on the right.

Issues in IE display with covers all appearing in one long line as mentioned above.

Fixed. Let me know if it's okay.

Aug 11, 2008, 12:18pm Top

14>It has not disappeared. It is on the right.

Oh. Awesome.

(That was rather embarrasing.)

That's what I get for assuming it was where I left it! I like the new placement--I think it makes it more consistent with the other pages.

Not fixed on IE6/XP

Also still see the related series problems mentioned in #9.

On another note--Will there be some way to link related Awards together?

For example:
James Tiptree, Jr. Award
James Tiptree, Jr. Award Shortlist

Aug 11, 2008, 12:24pm Top

Don't the shortlist and the winners usually overlap?

Note that you can also use the description field.

Aug 11, 2008, 12:28pm Top

19>Don't the shortlist and the winners usually overlap? Note that you can also use the description field.

Technically, I suppose they overlap. The book needs to be nominated in order to win. However, I haven't seen many (if any) CKers noting that a book was a winner, and was on the shortlist, and was nominated., etc.

Using the description field is a good idea, thanks.

Aug 11, 2008, 12:29pm Top

8: Um. Just take the same method that creates the #s for Doctor Who and label some of the other Doctors.

Although it would be nice to have Character Description/Award Description, etc.

Aug 11, 2008, 1:32pm Top

#11 - I've been wondering the same thing. I was up most of last night working on the characters in graphic novels, and superheroes sure do change their names a lot.

Aug 11, 2008, 1:36pm Top

Is it possible to have a blue link "see yours" on each individual series page so I can see on one page of my catalog view all the books I have entered?

I love using the series feature to add books. Even though I will see a green check next to each book on the individual series page I have to go to my author page, click "see yours" and sort through all my listings to see which ones I tagged own and which I tagged do not own. I do tag books with the series name but sometimes I don't get around to it right away.

What is the best way to navigate to these pages? Say I'm interested in London: what do I need to type in to the URL to get to that page? Or should I navigate from another page?

Aug 11, 2008, 1:45pm Top

/place/London, England, UK

But the rub is that you have to use the most commonly used CK term for that place. That's made easy when entering data in CK because of the autocomplete menu that gives you the most common item at top.

Maybe the best way is to use the search menu at the top of those pages to search CK.

28> Thanks for the link. That makes things even more confusing. :) Out of the hundreds of characters listed in graphic novels, I can only find three that use the format they decided on. I'll post over in that group.

That seems somewhat unfair on the Voyager Doctor: in the context of that specific work, he's known as "The Doctor". That's it, pure and simple. He'd look a bit odd as "The Doctor (Star Trek: Voyager)". But yes, it would work. At least, I think it should.

Except: In Stormwatch, the character has been entered as "The Doctor (Habib ben Hassan)". And he shows up in the list of works with no suffix. Having pondered, I suspect that'll be because the (real) Doctor's titles all start with digits, and the non-numeric ones aren't being displayed.

Checking other non-numerically comment characters seems to confirm this.

The covers are fine now. Have you had any luck dealing with the overlap issue for the related items (mentioned in #9)? On the right-hand side of any of the series, author, character, etc pages, the green/gray "weighting" bar covers the first letters of the Related Series, etc links.

Aug 11, 2008, 5:29pm Top

I clicked on 'Show all x items' in one of the boxes in the right-hand column and got a lovely fantastic long list (in this case, of Related People/Characters for Toronto -- which I suppose I should have expected, given that it did say there would be 189 items)... but then I couldn't shorten it again.

Could we get a link (either at the top of bottom of each expanded list -- I can't decide which would be better) for expanded lists to switch back to their shorter versions?

(I love this whole new set of features BTW -- fabulous!)

Yes the images now nicely wrap.

Aug 13, 2008, 1:42pm Top

Um, how long until there are homepage modules for this? It's only a matter of time until I decide I must read every book that takes place in Ohio!

Seriously, awesome addition to CK. Makes all that compulsiveness I went through very much worth it.
