Glowy magic, wolves and damsels in distress
Sci-fi/fantasy publisher Orbit has compiled a chart of 2008 Fantasy Cover Elements, charting the prevalence of unicorns and swords, elves and "glowy magic" (a big winner).
I'm disappointed in the minimalist "damsels in distress." As a boy with a good collection of Conan novels, I feel that fantasy covers are all about occasions to show impossibly good-looking women in clothing of dubious practicality. I'm betting, if tallied, chainmail brassieres might well beat out glowy magic.

I have a feeling that the numbers for "damsels in distress" and lack of "chainmail brassieres" (just thinking about that makes my chest hurt) has to do with their sample size. It would be interesting if they compared the numbers for various cover elements over time.
The completely dark cover of meaninglessness has a certain appeal to it though...
I'm guessing "clothing of dubious practicality" could be a unisex category of its own. As best as I can recall, Conan's outfit didn't look a whole lot sturdier than that of the barbies at his feet.
Nah, nothing's changed. Check out the cover for 'Seeker's Bane' by PC Hodgell. The damsel is not in distress but is risking a nasty chest cold. (Particularly amusing when you have read the books and know that the heroine is at one point mistaken for her brother).
