Here's an example:
http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=kingdorothyurfer
Because of that *Title missing* thing, you can't go here:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1911826/editions
without getting the trained garbage collecting monkey message.

Did the monkeys go on strike?

When you try and separate it, the separation fails with a book not found error. Details: book=2344563&work=1911826 ...

which is Venus by Ben Bova. Confused - you will be - because the book page has a mish-mash of info from both works.

Edited: Oct 30, 2010, 12:14pm

Should have given the confused link, sorry:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1911826/book/2344563

and the link from the owner's page is:
http://www.librarything.com/work/19206/book/2344563

so the book numbers are the same, but the work numbers are different.

Very interesting! Thank you, Noisy for that tip about reading the URL. How I wish I would have thought of it! :)

This sound similar (but different, too) to some of the problems I ran into here:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/100257

The trained monkeys were everywhere. It never got an LT comment, though. (And it's a flaming red bug.)

I just took the work all the way apart and put it back together. I did not glean any new information from that enterprise. Noisy is onto something, though.

One thing I would like to offer as a possible contributor to this behavior is 'private library.' It seems to me that every time there is wierdness, there is a private library. Could be nothing, but... anyway.

7Noisy
Oct 30, 2010, 4:26pm

I concur. None of the named members with this work have a problem with their entry. It's one of the private libraries.

Oct 30, 2010, 5:37pm

6> Well, in the example I posted, I tracked it back to a very particular non-private user. I think something really bad just happened to their data. Yeah, I know, a really helpful conclusion but it's all I got.

Have you ever noticed this when you're on a combine.php page for an author?
Updating edition info for X editions...
National Geographic says 7.
Here they are, all found by searching for Title missing

Hoping this might be helpful to somebody someday if this bug ever gets assigned. /hint

Update on why this isn't fixed yet (see http://www.librarything.com/topic/107331).

This looks fixed.

In that case, needs discussion.

Here's another
http://www.librarything.com/work/9146516/editions
I used Noisy's trick to track down the offender.
When you go to this page
http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=dictionarieseditorso-1
do a ctrl-F for The American Heritage Children's Science Dictionary
There you see the one that is Title missing
If you hover over its 'separate' link, you find the book number is 2878801
Go to that work:
http://www.librarything.com/work/2878801
Skaterboy, a book held by 2 private users

I still find these. I guess I will reopen it so Tim won't forget. I wish I had a way to just fix them.

Sorry. I need an example. Otherwise it's not a bug.

No bug

Because of that *Title missing* thing, you can't go here:

without getting the trained garbage collecting monkey message.

Not true.

Only thing I notice I can't do is separate that "Title Missing" thingy from the real editions. But I don't see that as a big deal.

27Collectorator
May 10, 2012, 4:15am

Title missing in and of itself is not a bug?

28r.orrison
May 10, 2012, 2:42pm

To the extent that the lists of editions for the work on those two pages don't agree, one of them must surely be wrong, no? Either there's an edition with no title that's missing from the work's editions page, or there's an edition that should have a title on the author combine/separate page.

29BarkingMatt
May 10, 2012, 2:54pm

Oh, I fully agree it would be nice to see those "Title Missing" entries getting suppressed. But I think that's not the same as the bug mentioned in OP.

30brightcopy
May 10, 2012, 2:59pm

Augh. The bug was just very poorly stated, Tim. Here's a restatement:

1) Go to: http://www.librarything.com/combine.php?author=kingdorothyurfer
2) Click on "separate" next to the "Title missing" work and click okay.
3) You are taken to a page that says "Error: Work not found. (1)"
3b) The work is never separated.

Does that make it clear, Tim?

It's not a huge bug, it's just an annoyance-level bug. It's kind of a moot point because what we really want is for those "Title missing" works to go away...

31Collectorator
May 10, 2012, 3:59pm

The bug was not poorly stated. The bug was as it was described in the OP on October 30, 2010.
THEN, Tim tinkered with it on January 12, 2011 and made it stop keeping you from accessing the page I described.
It is still a bug, though, and so it has been reopened several times.
It's not a bug in Tim's book, though, so we should all get used to seeing
Updating info for 1 editions ... all over the place.

They're zero copies on crack. Fuck 'em.

I isolated one of the [Title missing] editions, if that's any help. One of the works linked above was Love Letters to the Monkeys. I separated all of the real editions (recombined here). I was left with a work containing only the [Title missing] edition. It can been seen on the work combine potentials page.

33timspalding
Oct 18, 2012, 11:17pm

These "Title missing" ones are different from some other ones. The edition basically doesn't exist in any way whatsoever.

So these have been killed—around 3k. Bug fixed. Thanks.

There are still other "Title missing" books out there. Maybe they're the "other ones"?
