I have recently been on a real non-fiction kick, and am looking for recommendations. I really enjoy true crime books, as well as books on ghosts and hauntings. I'm also interested in books about hoaxes, but am having trouble finding some.
In terms of authors/books I've really enjoyed, Devil in the White City, Mary Roach, The Girls of Murder City, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher, and Stacy Horn.
True crime: The Mormon Murders by Steven Naifer or Salamander: The Story of the Mormon Forgery Murders by Linda Sillitoe. There are lots of other forgery crime stories if you get interested. Many of them are related to hoaxes.
Hoaxes: Voodoo Histories by David Aaronovitch and Scams from the Great Beyond by Peter Huston
In Cold Blood immediately comes to mind, here. As for NF status, it was extremely well researched. Close enough.
If anyone needs a quick diversion, my short story "A Japanese Custom" was recently published in the online journal MTLS. It's based on my memories of my eccentric grandmother who was anything but a traditional Japanese lady.... I always loved hearing her reminisce about her girlhood in BC, before the Japanese-Canadians had lost everything in the war.... The story can be read through my blog www.the-reading-list.com
Now back to finishing the last two chapters of my memoir.....
