Group:  What the Dickens...? ignore
Topic:  David Copperfield in public places... 0 / 15 read

I worry greatly as to whether some of you might lose your trusted copy of David Copperfield or feel embarassed to pull out said book in a public place or while at work.

Hence, the suggestion when next you are in a public spot like Starbucks or at work, you may wish to type in http://www.ellopos.net/dickens/copperfie...
for said book with illustrations.

I am sure that others have resorted to far more inventive strategems in order to facilitate such reading, but I thought I would offer this one up in the spirit of the technology of the time in which we find ourselves.

Enjoy.

Great idea! The link needs fixing, though, Urquhart

Embarrassed? Why?
People can only be proud of showing they are reading a classic such as DC!

I recently took my copy of Oliver Twist with me to a doctor's appointment. No-one in the waiting room seemed to mind. But then again, usually I'm there with a PSP or Nintendo DS, so I guess I'm already known as a bit of a geek ;P

Whenever I take a Dickens book into public places, I conceal it in the dust-jacket from The Story of O.

Well, whaddya know, when I take The Story of O with me to the doctor's office, I usually have it in a dust jacket from Dickens.

Reading David Copperfield in public reminds me of that classic "Twilight Zone" episode. Mr. Beavus (or whatever his name was) was reading David Copperfield as he was wroking as a bank teller. He got fired for reading on the job.

Am I the only person who has "good copies" for reading at home and "bad copies" for sticking in a pocket or handbag and carrying round?

I got so fed up of paperbacks disintegrating on me (d**n it some of those copies were only 20yrs old), that I've taken to replacing them with nice Everyman editions, on acid-free paper and then buying secondhand or £1 copies for everyday reading on the bus/coffee shop/fresh air.

I know this is not about Dickens, but one time when I was in downtown. I had my copy of Villette with me in the car. My boyfriend made a joke about someone stealing it off the seat. (He had a very old car and he didn't lock his car to keep him from needing to replace the windows. He also never kept anything of value in there.) I told him that I might be sad but the thief would have excellent taste. If they couldn't afford to buy it, then let them take it and Welcome. It was still in the car when we came back.

I went to a concert once and ran into the lead singer afterwards, and wanted to get his autograph but the only paper I had with me was my copy of David Copperfield and I was too embarrassed...

I recently saw a ("60 Minutes") TV interview with Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay. I noticed in some of the footage taken while the band was travelling on a plane that Martin was a Penguin Classics paperback and I recognised the art on the cover. I checked my library and discovered it was David Copperfield he was reading.

I saw that same thing! I'm going to be paying attention to his new lyrics to see if there's any Copperfield-inspired goodness. :)
