After something like 20 years of hemming and hawing and putting various books onto various wishlists (and I have MANY scattered here and there) I have decided to pick an "official" adventure book list and begin collecting and reading the books. I chose National Geographic Adventure Magazine's 100 Greatest Adventure Books of All Time. The first book on the list is Apsley Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey In The World. I've ordered a used copy from an AIDS charity in NYC and as soon as it arrives I'll begin.

The second collection/List I've decided on are the WPA state guides. I had wanted to collect and read them in alphabetical order but since I would really like the old hardbacks, with the dust jackets and maps intact, alphabetical is beyond my budget at the moment. So I have ordered a nice copy of A Guide to Alaska to start off the list.

I can't wait to get started!

New to LibraryThing today! I had lived in Alaska since 1972 and moved a year ago to Oregon Eastern slope of the Cascades. Will be interested in what you think of the Alaska Guide.

>1 Good luck with the WPA guides. Those things are big bucks even in beat-up condition.

I've tried picking up a few of the Rivers of America, same thing.

#4 - I agree.

I hadn't even heard of the Rivers of America Series until I found a used one for $2.00 at our local 2nd hand store. In fact, I didn't even know the series was really collectible.

So far I have 2 WPA guides, Nevada that I picked up for a few bucks at a used bookstore years ago and the Alaska guide that is on it's way, which if it lives up to it's description, has the BJ and maps intact for only $15.00. But we'll see. I couldn't get Alabama first because it's too expensive.
