Several people have expressed the desire to participate in a group read for Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. For some of us, the release of the movie is a good excuse to visit or re-visit that great classic. Official start on April 15th.

The Spoiler Thread is now up.

Thanks for setting this up, Ilana. I'm looking forward to finally reading this book!

I read it in high school many many years ago and want a refresher before seeing the movie. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm in, and I also have Wide Sargasso Sea that I'd like to take on at the same time.

Me, too. And I am also thinking of reading Wide Sargasso Sea as a companion.

I read both Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea just last month, so I won't be participating. Though I might chime in with a comment or two, as I have the novel fresh in mind, if I have something to add. :)

I'm reading it now, so I'm definitely in. Thanks for setting up the thread! I'm really enjoying it so far.

I'm not sure I'm reading it soon, but this is one of my favorite books, so I'll probably chime in with a comment or two :D.

Jane Eyre is a book that I think of as being one of my favourites, but I haven't read it since I was eleven so it will be interesting to reread it and see what I make of it now.

Thought this article might be of some interest here...
Jane vs Cathy, Rochester vs Heathcliff, Charlotte vs Emily...
I found it a little sad how easily the author dismisses poor Anne Bronte.

It's also been ages since I read Jane Eyre and it's one of my favourite books so I'm very tempted by the idea of a reread.

I haven't read it since I was about 12, though have seen numerous films/TV adaptations since. It would be interesting to read it again...

#12 Thanks for the link, I enjoyed the article - and indeed a bit sad to read that Anne 'has been forgotten' - especially because I am one of those rare people who really like Tenant of Wildfell Hall, in any case more than Wuthering Heights but maybe not more than Jane Eyre. So I guess it's clear now, I'm in Team Jane :-)

I'm looking forward to this thread as I read the book last year and had some things I would love to discuss with other readers!

I re-read Jane Eyre in January and plan to see the film tonight. I'm looking forward to a good discussion here!

Looks like we've got quite a few people on board. The more the merrier! :-)

I'm in - I've never made it through this book, and was planning on reading it, Wide Sargasso Sea, and Rebecca, this summer as a bit of a project, but with the group read, I'll start early!

Two days early, I got ten chapters into the book last night. I had momentum but noticed that it was after midnight, my bedtime, and the story had a natural break, so there I paused. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I'm in, will be good to refresh my memory before watching the movie

As I stated in the first message, the official start is on the 15th, but I'll get an "early birds" spoiler thread started soon so that the rest of us starting on schedule don't get TOO many spoilers when we're ready to join in the discussion—yes, even though many of us have already read it—I for one, didn't appreciate getting spoilers about the last chapters from early birds when we started reading Jane Austen, and I'd like to avoid that this time. Fair enough?

eta: if you have better suggestions, I'm listening!

Oops, I had just remembered it as April. I'm sorry I didn't put off my reading until later, but now that I've started I have to keep going. I read the Joyce Carol Oates introduction to my edition, so I've been spoiled already; it still makes compelling reading.

I have a copy and will join in if I have time in April. Thanks for putting this together!

#22 Robert, when I read your previous message, I thought maybe I hadn't put in the start date at the top and when I double-checked (it was there), I put it in bold, which is what I should have done to begin with. I know what you mean about the fact that you can't stop now. If I take a break of more than a day or two on a book, I forget who all the characters were, where I was in the story, you name it.

Why'd you say you've been spoiled already? Did JCO put in a bunch of spoilers in the intro?

Finally, any thoughts on the spoiler thread? I'm not that keen on my initial idea of an 'early bird' spoiler thread. I don't want to create two arbitrary groups separated according to who is starting when. Do you think you'd be ok with waiting a couple of weeks when I put up the 'official' spoiler thread? I don't think more than one spoiler thread (separating books sections, for example) is worth it for this book since it's a relatively short one.

#23 We'll be happy to have you join along if you can make it billiejean.

I probably read the start date, and it didn't sink in because when the subject arose we were speaking about an April discussion.

Joyce Carol Oates outlined the story apparently through to the end.

I'm going along for the ride. If I see something to comment on, I will. If something occurs spontaneously to me that is just too precious not to post, I will burden everybody with it. No I have no suggestions, and yes I can wait.

I've put up the Jane Eyre spoiler thread. I'm just asking that those who have read it already hold off for at least a week from the official start date of 15th before revealing spoilers about the ending of the book, to give a chance to readers who haven't read it yet or don't remember the details. Thanks! http://www.librarything.com/topic/114084
