Mar 29, 2011, 3:15pm Top

I am very excited to be receiving Embassytown by China Mieville. This will be the first book I have read by this author.

This clinches my complete lack of understanding of how the algorithm works for fiction (Clarification: I know how it works, as much as anyone who isn't in on the secret does. But this convinces me that I don't understand how the list of "similar" books is generated.). It's the second time I've lost out on an author I have multiple books by to someone with none. (The first time was even less comprehensible; I had all the Temeraire books to date, all the Patrick O'Brian books, a handful of Hornblower, and a handful of Anne McCaffrey, and failed to snag Tongues of Serpents, while people who didn't have any Temeraire books got it.)

I hope you enjoy it, craso!

Mar 29, 2011, 3:16pm Top

I snagged Althea by Madeleine Robins. I haven't received it yet but hope it's going to be a great read. Since I live in Greece I wasn't entitled to request many books but at least I am happy I won something!

Mar 29, 2011, 3:38pm Top

I snagged {Leaving Van Gogh} by Carol Wallace. Thank you LibraryThing!

Mar 29, 2011, 3:44pm Top

Lorax @ 82:

I'm with you. I made three requests and in two cases I have all the works by those authors; in the third I have about 80% of the author's previous books. I got nada.

But, that's o.k. -- I've been extremely lucky with LTER.

Gotta go now; no ER win means I have to call my local bookstore to pre-order all three of those books. From the publishers POV, it's a good thing I didn't win, isn't it?

Mar 29, 2011, 3:54pm Top

I snagged Evil Genius by Patricia Rice Thanks so much!!

Edited: Mar 29, 2011, 4:11pm Top

>82 lorax:

I've speculated that a viable strategy for publishers* would be to find readers who aren't already fans. In which case, having previous books in a series or by the same author might not be a boon.

Of course, you have many other "similar" books in your example. I could further speculate that in a similar vein, publishers might want to build interest among readers who have less chance of coming to the book on their own -- so again, having "too similar" books might not help. Perhaps the Madison Ave gurus are targeting audiences who are more likely to garner the attention of the Oprah Book Club set?

But this is all speculation. Which I find entertaining, if also confounding.

* In essence, LT provides a menu of options to publishers. "Similar Book" lists would not be built the same way, every time, for every book. Rather, perhaps publishers may pick from a short list of "objectives" for each title they offer, and there is a dedicated algorithm for each objective. Would make sense, though I've not read anything here on LT indicating this is, in fact, offered.

I was surprised when I received my notification for Manly Art: They Can Run But They Can't Hide. I'd tend to request whatever looks interesting. That being said if I had to lay money on any book I would've won this month it would've been the Brothers In Arms: The Story of al-Qa'ida and the Arab Jihadists because I have a lot of books on the topic in my library. The algorithm works in mysterious ways.

Mar 29, 2011, 10:52pm Top

Me, too. ;)

I've had the same or similar thoughts. In fact, I just realized as I sat down at the computer a few minutes ago that I've previously won one LTER book by each of the authors I referenced earlier. Makes more sense from a selling POV to spread the wealth, doesn't it?

Mar 29, 2011, 10:55pm Top

After a few months of dry spell, I got Sex Doll: A History. A little bit of a stretch, but I do have some gender and sociology books in my collection. Really looking forward to it!

125 Annie -

The idea I believe is the best reader for a book, not the best book for a reader

Very true, although as people mentioned earlier, the algorithm's conclusion of "best reader" can be baffling at times.

The publisher sent me a link to an online version. It is incomplete, showing only 62 pages of 120. That gives a decent preview of the photos included, but does not allow a view of the entire book. I bought the hardcover version, so just have to wait until the book is released in April.

This month, won Now You See Me by S.J. Bolton. Oddly, it's a book I don't even remember requesting! I'd been holding my breath to see which of the two books I remembered asking for I'd ended up receiving (if any), so I was slightly taken aback. Still happy, of course, and perhaps the algorithm felt this was the best book for me...

I won Seduce Me in Dreams by Jacquelynn Frank. I love her books and this one is no exception. I am halfway through it and am enjoying it so far. Inter galactic travel is always alittle more difficult for me to read but she does a really good job in the details so that you understand a bit more. I will read others if she writes more to this series.
