Check The Hunger Games for 1143 reviews. Hopefully that will be enough to help you decide. ;-)

Does anyone have an opinion about reading it if I have read Battle Royale?

It's similar to Battle Royale but different enough that they are both worth a read I think. Hunger Games is less bloody, and more character-driven with a more elaborate back-story to the political scenario than Battle Royale, which is more driven by the immediate plot-line. Also it may have been the translation I read, but Battle Royale seemed poorly written in comparison.

However, if you've read Battle Royale first you will likely feel the Hunger Games is a ripoff of it to some extent. Apparently the author had never heard of Battle Royale before she wrote it thought, and then consciously didn't read or see it while she was still writing the series so it didn't influence her at all.

Thanks, Kira.
According to my daughter, who studies Japanese and spent 4 months there last fall, it is a very poor translation.

On the Barnes and Noble posting on Facebook about the omission this year of a Pulitzer Prize for literature several of the not entirely sentient said that The Hunger Games should have won it.

the hunger games are barely any better written than that twilight rubbish

That happens here sometimes. It is a reasonable alternative to letting people know how you feel in a rational, well-written statement.
