I am starting a new questions and chat thread as the original one has gotten quite long.
There are still quite a few books in the In Transit collection, some of which are getting quite old. It would be great if everyone could check the collection and post some updates on where books are at. Please check the collection even if you don't think you owe any books, just in case you've forgotten. :-)
Here's a link to the In Transit collection to make it easy to check :) : http://www.librarything.com/catalog/vbboz/intransit
Phew, I was worried that maybe I'd forgotten something, but I'm up to date. Hurrah!
When is the next round starting?
Thanks for posting the link, Tania.
The next round is starting September 5th. I have lab work at uni over the weekend, so we'll be starting on a Monday again.
Excellent, plenty of time to read more bookcrossing books to add to the VBB! :)
I'm just wondering when people would prefer to begin round 28? Following the current timing we should begin it on January 7th, however I realise that probably won't suit everyone, so we could begin on February 4th instead.
Either one suits me, but what do others prefer?
I am happy to go with anything ...... May I be bumped to the end of the list, though?
Either should suit me, although like Carole, I'd probably prefer to be later on the list! (May still be on holidays in early Jan; and back to school kerfuffle in early February.)
I'd like January too, but Feb is OK as well. Is there a fence nearby that I can sit on?
I have removed the 5 books that Pat-the-Rat had in the box, as she has withdrawn.
Most people didn't seem to mind what month we begin the next round in, but there were more votes for January. On that note, we will begin the next round on January 7th.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I won't have access to a computer to make any updates between now and January 1st.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and that 2012 has great things in store!
Round 28 of the Oz VBB is now complete. We didn't hear from briz-cowgirl, and have now not heard from her for several rounds. As such, I am removing briz-cowgirl and her books from the box until we hear from her again.
Luckaye, it appears that Sh*t My Dad Says was owed to you by briz-cowgirl, but it does not appear to have been sent. You can take a free pick from the box to replace it.
Elddau1 will be joining us for the next round - welcome!
The next round will begin March 2nd. See you all then! :-)
>>Elddau1 will be joining us for the next round - welcome!
Yay! Fresh blood.
Yay! Fresh blood.
LOL, but I agree with the sentiment. Welcome Elddau1!
Thanks all for your welcome. I'm very happy to be joining in.
But looks like I got bumped on my first turn. LOL.
Just letting everyone know I tried to e-mail five different people (who all conincidentally had Gmail e-mail addresses) this morning for the Oz VBB, and discovered that my e-mail address has been blocked by Google for allegedly sending spam/unsolicited mail. I can only assume that this is because I have sent numerous e-mails recently with contact list updates, etc.
It appears that there is an appropriately long-winded procedure to go through to un-block my e-mail address/ISP with Google, but I don't have the time to deal with it at the moment. So I will be going back to old fashioned PMs for the moment.
You can still contact me through e-mail. I just can't write/respond to any Gmail addresses.
Luckaye has advised me that she has not received True Detectives from Pat-the-Rat. As it was sent over a year ago I'm going to consider it lost and remove it from the box, and give Luckaye a free pick to replace it.
The current round (#32) is now complete. Thanks everyone! I (tantan) will be overseas for the next round so L1nda is kindly going to take over the reins again for that round.
While I'm away it would be great if everyone could post as to whether they'd prefer the first round for 2013 to start in January or February.
Thanks once again tantan, for all your work on the OZ VBB.
I also don't mind either way; January or February would suit.
Hope you have a great trip tantan when you go.
It'd be fun in the Jan hols to have a round but maybe we'd need more than the 24hrs to catch it if people are busy? I don't mind Feb either.
(Salmon Fishing is coming your way soon. sorry I got to reading it myself, so a little delay. Won;t be long.)
Whatever you decide is fine with me. Have a great trip tantan and thank you so much for running the box and keeping us all organised.
I'm (tantan) back from my holiday. Thanks so much L1nda for taking over for the last round. Most people didn't seem to mind when we start the next round, so I think I'm going to go with January 18th. I know I won't have much internet access at the very beginning of January, and we're moving house in February, so that suits me best. Hope that's fine with everyone else.
See you all then!
What with moving and medical issues, I have completely lost track of OzVBB. Do I have any books that have been claimed but not posted? If so, let me know and I will get them on their way.
seldombites, the only book you need to send is The Thirty-Nine Steps to luckaye.
Just a note that the copy of Blacktown that Luckaye posted to L1nda has been lost in the mail, so L1nda has a free pick this round to replace it.
I'm just wanting to get some opinions on how everyone feels about our current two-monthly format. There have been quite a lot of passes in the last few rounds, and I'm not sure if that's just because people are busy, or the rounds are too close together for people to get much reading done (I know I'm doing well if I get a book read once every 3 weeks), or some other reason...?
Would people prefer to move to a three-monthly format? Or something else...?
Thoughts and any suggestions welcome please. :-)
I am happy with how it is now, but if other people want to change it, I have no objections.
I'm happy with 2 months, but flexible. I look forward to it coming around. Thanks, tantan for your hosting.
Though I do struggle with the 24 hour limit. I watch and wait my turn but Murphy's Rule means it usually comes up in the middle of a deadline or other clash.
Yes, I do agree that 24 hours is a bit short sometimes. Perhaps we could make it 48 hours?
My only concern with 48 hour turns (which is what we used to have, if I remember correctly) is that it means the whole round in itself can end up dragging out for a really long time, and I think that's why we shortened it.
How would people feel if we trialled 36 hour rounds? I'm happy to give that a go next round, and also happy to revisit going back to 48 hours for the round after if 36 hours still feels too short.
The general consensus seems to have been to stick with the 2-monthly format. Round 37 will therefore start on July 5th. We will trial 36 hour rounds and see how that goes.
However, if anyone has any further comments or suggestions please feel free to let me know (here or privately if you prefer).
I would like to be removed from OZVBB for now. I'm hardly reading and I have 2 book cases full of TBR's. Thanks Tanya for doing a wonderful job.
Not as yet. I have tried contacting her before every round, but I can only try through the BookCrossing PM system. Does anyone have a personal e-mail address for her? She owes four books to various people, so I'm thinking about cancelling them as lost and giving free picks to replace them.
I have tried multiple times to contact bekoh, and have had no response. Therefore I am going to remove bekoh's books from the box, and give free picks to those who were owed books. Those who will be getting free picks are:
catsalive (who was owed The Secret Scripture)
luckaye (who was owed The Hard Way)
seldombites (who was owed A Pressure Cooker Saved My Life and The Secret History)
Bekoh, if you see this and want to rejoin the Oz VBB, please contact me (tantan).
I recently had a big clean out at my home and some of my book piles got mixed up, so if I offer up a book I have already offered previously, just let me know and I will replace it.
The next round (round 40) should start in January. I am a bit unsure about what my plans are going to be in the first week of January, so I am hesitant to commit to running the next round then. I will be overseas at the beginning of February.
I would be happy to start the next round in mid-February, or alternatively we could leave the next round until March.
Ditto . . . whatever works best for you, Tanya. Thanks for your time and input, and with exams too!!
Thanks everyone for your responses. Just to be on the safe side, I've decided to go with March for the next round. The 1st falls on a Saturday, however just so we can start that little bit earlier we'll kick off on the Friday before (February 28th).
Just a couple of housekeeping issues before the next round of the Oz VBB.
1. If you're passing on your turn, but you have books that need to be replaced, those books still need to be replaced even if you're not choosing anything. This just helps to make sure that there is a constant flow of new books going through the box.
2. I have received a suggestion that we allow books to stay in the box one round longer than we do currently before they need to be replaced. What are people's thoughts on that?
3. Do you have any suggestions or comments for the Oz VBB? I am very open to hearing your thoughts! :-)
Tanya (tantan for vbboz)
Hello all, I am happy for the books to stay in the box for another round. Nothing to add at this stage but thank you Tanya for organising us all so well :)
hi Tanya, I'm just not reading enough now with other commitments so think I will pull out of the OZVBB for now. I have 7 books to be replaced from previous skipped rounds so will offer seven donations (? Is that how it works?) before I go.
Have loved my involvement with the VBB and many thanks to you for organising. Also a huge thanks and shout out to the others for the wonderful books that have come my way.
cheerio, chriss :-)
Hi Chriss. No problem - thanks for the message. We don't really have a consistent policy for what to do when people leave, but I think putting in seven donations sounds like a great idea. We'll be happy to welcome you back when you've got time to return! :-)
Sorry I'm a bit late in getting organised for the next round of the Oz VBB. I've been a bit snowed under with uni. We'll be kicking off on July 4th.
Based on the feedback I received during the last round, books will now be staying in the box for one round longer before needing to be replaced. However, there are still a few people with books to be replaced from earlier rounds, so please check if that includes you when you take your turn in this round.
As always, please feel free to contact me (here or privately) if at any time you have questions or concerns.
So sorry, but I'm now going to have to postpone the next round of the Oz VBB until August. I've had a uni trip come up a week earlier than I expected it to, so won't be able to run the July round when I'd planned to.
My apologies for the confusion.
We'll kick off round 42 on August 1st.
I've closed off the latest round of the Oz VBB. We'll start the next round on October 3rd.
I'm aware that there are currently some issues with books that have been in the box for quite a long time (some owed to people, some waiting to be replaced). I'm working on getting these issues sorted out, but I'm extremely limited for available time currently. I probably won't have everything sorted out by the next round (mainly because the next round is about three weeks before my thesis is due!). However, I will (hopefully!) have some time off over Christmas, so I hope to get everything tidied up then.
As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions or comments. I always read e-mails and messages, even if I don't always reply to them straight away!! :-)
Some of you are aware that I have been spending some time in Papua New Guinea recently as part of my uni degree. I have been asked to help stock a village school library with some books. I have already collected some books together, but would be happy to take donations as well if any of you have some books that would be suitable that you'd like to offer. The teacher is looking for books suitable for ages of about 6 to 8. I'm not fussed either way as to whether or not donated books are registered on BookCrossing - if they are registered there's no guarantee that they'll ever be journalled. My only request is that books are in good condition. If you're interested in donating anything just let me know, and I'll message you my postal address.
There seems to be a strange bug in the system. When I clicked on PJLBewdy's name to send a BC message It sent me to workerscompensationjew's Bookshelf. When I hovered over the link it was correct http://bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/PJLBewdy so I don't no where the problem is based. It still says the correct thing in the url - it's just been hijacked. Everyone else's link works OK.
I'll email BC support. I just tried to go through search member & the same thing happened. Anyone else having this problem?
Did you manage to get through? I've just tried, and I got directed correctly to PJLBewdy's page on BookCrossing. Let me know if you're still having trouble and I can contact her on your behalf, seeing as I seems to be working for me.
Bug fixed. BC think it went funny when they were making some changes/ doing a site refresh.
I am going to remove luckaye from the list of active participants in the box. We haven't heard from her since Round 38, and she's not replying to my messages.
Just for posterity, in case she comes back:
luckaye is owed one free pick
I am removing the following book from the box that was supposed to be replaced from earlier rounds:
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs (Round 36)
The following people were owed books by luckaye and have not received them. They will have free picks in the next round. Note I will be deleting the owed books from the box, to clean things up.
amberc (for Beyond the Dark)
seldombites (for A Long Way Down)
wookiebender (for Cry, the Beloved Country)
Elddau1 (for Hallowed Bones)
Also note that seldombites, wookiebender, and Elddau1 are not currently participating in the Oz VBB. Hopefully they'll rejoin us at some point, so I will be noting in my database that they have free picks should they rejoin.
Elddau1 left a number of books in the box as donations when she left. However, they've been there for quite a few rounds now without being selected, so I'm going to remove them.
The books were:
The Girls Guide to Hunting & Fishing by Melissa Bank
The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory
A Distant Dream by Margaret Graham
Living With Crazy Buttocks by Kaz Cooke
Falls the Shadow by Sharon Kay Penman
Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda
I think I was still owed a book by seldombites - someone owed me The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry.
seldombites contacted me to say that she would send the books she owed by the end of February. If it's okay I would like to give it until then, but if there's no evidence by then that they've been sent, then I'll write them off in preparation for the next round.
Can't help thinking that if lolkat chose Grover's Book of Cute Little Baby Animals & Rupert Board Book 4 Has a Party for a tot in 2013, the kid will be too old for them if & when they do arrive.
crimson-tide will have one free pick and lolkathryn will have two free picks in the next round, to replace the books owed by seldombites.
Books removed from the box:
- The Aenid (was for crimson-tide)
- Rupert's Board Book (was for lolkathryn)
- Grover's Book of Cute Little Baby Animals (was for lolkathryn)
Didn't we have to put a couple of books in to start off? Just wondering.
Yep. I forgot. I'll send aussieangel2 a message to point that out. Thanks for the reminder. :-)
I'll be in Namibia at what should have been the start date of the next round - December 4th. I can think of two options:
- Does anyone want to volunteer to run that round, and it can still start December 4th.
- We can leave the next round to January, and I"ll start it on January 8th
Or another option I haven't thought of...? Please let me know. :-)
I'm happy to wait until January, unless someone's keen to run it in December.
I haven't had any offers to run a round in December, so we'll start the next round on January 8th.
Apologies that I have not yet set up for the next round. I am still waiting to hear if I am heading off on a field trip next week. If I do go, the next round will start on April 1st. If I don't go, we'll have the next round starting at the usual time, being March 4th. I'll know later this week.
I have checked with aussieangel2 and jeniwren, and they have both not received books they were owed and that have been sent (The Husband's Secret, and Time and Time Again, respectively). Free picks will be available in the next round (Round 54) to replace these.
The next round is due to start on Feb 3rd. However, I will not be available to run the next round on that date.
- We start the next round on March 3rd instead
- Someone else volunteers to run the round starting on Feb 3rd
Please let me know your preference, or if you would like to volunteer.
vbboz / tantan
I could have a go., I suppose. Can you fix my mistakes if I mess it up?
I'm OK either way.
catsalive, that would be fantastic! I can absolutely fix any mistakes if they happen! :-)
I very much appreciate you volunteering. I'll send you the info and instructions (it's all very easy) over the weekend.
catsalive, I've just e-mailed you with the info for running the round. Hopefully the e-mail address I had for you was correct. Please let me know if you don't receive it.
I'd like back into the VBB at the end of the current round, please.
Me @ Bookcrossing: http://www.bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/freelunch/
Me @ LibraryThing: http://www.librarything.com/profile/freelunch
Here are my two volunteered books:
http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/5781638 A Friend of the Earth by T.C. Boyle
http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/7376270 Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff
Welcome back freelunch! I've added you on at the end of the current round.
I have tried to contact livrecache several times, but have not heard back. For the moment, I will remove her from the list of the active participants, and will also remove the following books from the box:
- Optimism: Reflections on a Life of Action by Bob Brown
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Annie Barrows
As far as I can see, the following people are owed books that don't appear to have been received
- catsalive (The Dumas Club)
- foxygirlact (What Was She Thinking: Notes on a Scandal)
- lolkathryn (The Heather Blazing)
I am going to remove these books from the In Transit list, and give the above people a free pick in the next round.
Thanks, Tanya. I'm a bit confused, though. Jennymidget, aussieangel & crimson-tide have free picks in round 59; is that meant to be the three of us in the above post?
I'm not aware of being due for a free pick for any reason...
I agree with cats - looks like it should be the three mentioned above in post #103.
New blood, old blood, any blood will do..
Around the time this VBB started, some of us also started logging our books read in the Bookcrossing Australia group here on LibraryThing.
I personally hate offering opinions on the books I read, but I like to hear what others have to say.
Participant numbers have dwindled over the years. Anyone inclined to jump (back) into the flow will be very welcome.
Thanks Andrew. :D
Here's the link for the BookCrossing Australia Group Reading Log: http://www.librarything.com/topic/246681
We would certainly welcome others over there. You don't need to review the books if you don't want to - just tell us what you've read and what you thought.
And in return you may be hit with a heap of book bullets!! 😃
Hmmm, I'm really not sure how I mixed the names up - very odd. Indeed, it should be catsalive, foxygirlact, and lolkathryn receiving the free picks. Thanks for the heads up! I have fixed the header for Round 59.
Hi All, Just wanted to let you know that the Bookcrossing login is currently unsecure. I first reported this to them in early July and they acknowledged it was a problem. 7 ish weeks later it's still not fixed. I've just asked for an update but I won't be logging in to bookcrossing until it is sorted.
Thanks for the heads-up about this Kathryn.
We did send around a contact list sometime back to those who were willing to provide mailing addresses and e-mails. Perhaps it might be time to update that?
If anyone wants to be added to the list, please private message me via LibraryThing with your details.
For reference, I currently have the following active vbboz members on the contact list (at least an e-mail address, a postal address as well for some):
If you are on the list and would prefer not to be, please let me know.
I guess for this round we can send messages via LibraryThing if necessary, although many of us have other channels of communication as well anyway (e-mail, Facebook, etc.).
I've sent my contact details to the vbboz LibraryThing account.
I prefer to communicate via Facebook Messenger whenever possible, it isn't necessary to be "friends" to use it.
Fallback option is email or Bookcrossing PM, but I don't check my email *every* day.
Just a thought... Given the general crapness of Bookcrossing's PM system, and the not-much-betterness of LibraryThing PMs (though I like the site otherwise. I spend enough time here...), might it be worth setting up a private Facebook group for communication between participants?
I don't know if we're all on Facebook. I'm friends with a few people here, and I've been able to find most others whose "real" names I recall.
A private group would allow everyone to be connected without having to "friend" each other.
Well, I'm one of the strange ones *not* on Facebook. And planning to keep it that way. 😉
Why not just share email addresses between the group if PMs aren't ideal?
Email addresses are fine. I'm terrible at checking my email, but if I know something is coming I can probably make it work.
I did finally recieve a reply from Bookcrossing - they do actually have secure login avaible, but you have to go to it yourself - i.e. if you just pick login from the 'normal' http site, you will get the unsecured login, you have to enter: https://www.bookcrossing.com/account/login?returnUrl=/
youself to get the secure site. I have not yet got aorudn ot telling them how ridiculous tihs seems to me! But at least in the mean time it is possible ot use bookcrossing securely, if you know aobut it.
Also, happy ot remain on the updated email list
Round 60 is now complete. Usually we would have started the next round on December 1st. However, I will be away in early December. Options are for someone else to run the next round starting December 1st, or else we can leave the next round until January 5th when I will be available.
Please let me know any preferences.
I have contacted PJLBewdy a few times regarding sending I Am the Messenger to foxygirlact, but it doesn't appear to have ever been sent. I am going to remove this book from the box, and give foxygirlact a free pick in the next round.
It has been quite a few rounds since we last heard from catsalive. If anyone has any news please let us know.
In the meantime, I will remove catsalive's books from the box. These are the following:
- A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson
- Bound duology by Amanda Ashley
- The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris
- A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb
- The Jinx by Jennifer Sturman
- Outsiders by Nancy Holder
- The Bronze Horseman trilogy by Paullina Simons
- Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock
Griffin and Sabine was to be sent to crimson-tide, so crimson-tide has a free pick in the next round.
catsalive, if at some stage you are back and reading this, please just contact me to be added back to the box if you wish. :-)
Michyj is departing the box for the moment, so I have deleted the two books that she had listed.
I will be moving away in the coming months, so the next round (September) is the last round where I will be able to run the box. Is there anyone who would like to take over the box please? If you're interested, please get in touch.
As noted in Round 65, I have deleted all of tantan's 'Donations' books from the box.
I would like to announce that crimson-tide and jeniwren have very kindly offered to take over the running of the Oz VBB. Thank you both for taking this on!
Thanks for running the box so efficiently over the years, Tanya. 👏 🙂 👍
Please all be patient with Jenny and me while we find our feet, and do let us know if you find any errors or omissions. I'll be running the next few rounds and Jenny will take over when I'm off travelling.
The next round will begin on 2nd November. If you know of any other BookCrossers who may be interested to join us, please ask them to contact me.
amberC chose The Kiss during the last round, but it is no longer available. So I'll remove the book from the list and amber will have a free pick next round.
foxygirlact hasn't been involved in the box for quite some time. I've contacted her and she has decided to officially withdraw. So I have deleted the four books she had listed.
I would like to change the time period for a turn from 36 hours to 48 hours. As we are now a much smaller group than previously I do not see this causing any issues. The previous 36 hours can be a problem depending on when it begins, as sometimes it may include more day hours and other times more night hours.
If anyone feels strongly about this either way, please comment.
