I'm working my way thru presidential biographies and I need some suggestions for Madison. I know the material will probably be dry, but I'd like the best book I can get my hands on. I've already read His Excellency and John Adams, and I've got American Sphinx, by Joseph Ellis for Jefferson. I liked these books, because the authors crafted history into a great story. I'd like to continue that story with Madison if I can. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ralph Ketcham's James Madison: A Biography is the most recent comprehensive bio of Madison, though there have been a few 'niche' bios (James Madison and the Struggle for the Bill of Rights, The Last of the Fathers: James Madison and the Republican Legacy &c.). There's also the short bio done for the American Presidents series, simply James Madison by Garry Wills. He's much trickier than the first three (but probably not quite as tricky as Monroe ...)

If you are still doing this, and haven't seen it already, there is a US Presidents Challenge group, with the same goal. Their discussion posts have a number of suggestions for Madison etc, and post reviews as well.

I believe there is another recent release by Ralph Ketchum on James and Dolly Madison. Also, Revolutionary Characters has a short segement on Madison and as does Founding Brothers, I believe
