BN: It's nearly 10:20pm and our 2 year old is still WIDE awake. He got a toddler bed for Christmas, and after sleeping in it happily for three nights without getting out, he discovered last Thursday that he *can* get out. Tonight has been the worst by far, with so many ups and downs that I've lost count...but it's been going on for well over an hour now. Sigh.

we did a doorknob cover on the inside of Adara's room for a while while she adjusted to being able to get out. lots of people also do a baby gate in the kids doorway.

GN: We resized all of our over-long pillow cases. We have a California king-sized bed, which is narrower than the typical king-size, but longer, and every set of sheets came with obnoxiously long pillow cases (just because the bed is larger doesn't mean we want longer pillows)! Don't ask me why I never resized these before, because it's quite simple to do by hand, but I didn't think of tackling this until today. With the new sewing machine. And it was actually conquered by Groxx. I'm quite happy with my "new" pillow cases. :)

BN: Tomorrow's a half-day for work, so it's only a morning shift, and since the other crew worked last Monday (day after Christmas), we're working this Monday. It isn't really bad news, though. It's good to have a job, and the work is good. I'm just a terrible morning person. ^^;

Grk: I totally would have caved and slept in the toddler bed with the toddler! My limit for disrupted sleep is three times. 1-3 times of getting out of bed, I can still feel normal the next day. The fourth time, I go to bed with the wee one!

8grkmwk

#7 - If I'd already been in bed, lefty, I probably would've caved before he finally knocked out; since I was up doing stuff, I just periodically went back there and tucked him in again (and again...). However, I'm not sure we'd both fit in his bed, as it's a true toddler bed that uses the crib mattress!

GN: Went to the endocrinologist's today, blood pressure is good. When I saw my family doctor on December 20th, it was 142 over 82, today, 120 over 72. I was so stressed out about Christmas, closing Curves, keeping the house clean, etc, that it was no wonder that it was up. Mental note: avoid seeing the doctor right before Christmas.

GN: First article published on Huffington Post (it's a series of articles on ski resorts for the travel section).

Just news: Haven't been paid yet for that one and have four others pending. Dang, could use the money.

BN: Car still broken and don't know for sure what's wrong or if it's fixable. It'll get towed over to the garage one of these days.

BN: Have that cold everyone else has been having. Ugh.

BN: Currently it's 4 degrees out, feels like -10. Heat keeps cycling on and all I can think about is how fast the oil is being used up!

GN: This is the coldest night this week, according to the forecast. So it will be a bit better (though not actually warm) the next few days, and warmer than it's been the past few Januaries.

Kasongo: Good point, it's a bit like weighing yourself the week before Christmas I think, it's not like you're going to go on a diet over Christmas so what's the point in knowing if you've put on weight. Save the pain until the 1st of January that's what I say.

Happy new year everyone!

On a similar note, I have started a predictable and cliched diet and am going back to the gym this week, got to lose 2 stone (for Americans thats erm... 28 pounds? my maths isn't very good). I'm very grumpy about this as the weather is rainy and miserable and the house is still full of Xmas cake/pudding/biscuits and chocolate that everyone else is still eating :(
Oh well I'm still excited about this new year, diet aside, as I am planning to get a new job, learn to drive and move into my own flat (hopefully) :)

I'm glad your BP's gone back down. I agree about the holidays. I was making myself feel sick with stress.

BN/GN: I had an emergency situation yesterday for the first time in a work environment. I got it under control pretty fast, and the person was eventually well enough to leave with family after being looked over, thankfully. My boss thanked me for handling the situation perfectly.

Terrifying News: At this time yesterday (5:30 PM) a woman was attacked with a blunt object, pulled into an alley and raped. Horrifying, of course. What makes it terrifying is that it happened 1 block from my office and 2 blocks from my apartment. Also known as the route I walk two times a day. GN: We had a good Pantomime in the British style this weekend. The KATS board gave me a book with pictures of the various costumes I have done over the last 10 performances. This was our 11th one, but they couldn't do that one since we hadn't performed it yet.
BN: I could say anything because I was all choked up. 11 years as the costume designer for a great group of people makes it difficult.
GN; the play, "Cinderella and the Charming Frog Prince" went very well. Except for 3 zipper problems opening night. Right before Cinderella was to go on stage for the ball, she walked past me and, because I do this all the time during show time, I did a quick glance at her costume and noticed the zipper was coming away from her dress, so I quickly slapped some duct tape on it and off she went to the ball. We knew we had to duct tape one of the step sisters into her wedding gown for the finaily and were prepared when "Polly Flinders" came up and said her zipper had broken. Duct tape to the rescue for this quick change, yeah for white duct tape! We also saw that Dolly Double's gown was having a zipper problem after she was off the stage. But all was repaired and no one in the audience knew the difference.

GN: Found out that what I thought was neuropathy on my right hand is probably carpal tunnel. BN: It was windy and freezing cold today. Not the best weather for the door to be open all morning. Could've been worse and been a blizzard instead. Although the moving van was stuck and the movers didn't think they were going to make it off of our street, but they called the city asking if the road could be salted and/or sanded. I told them they could stay here because we had the room, but they would have to unpack all boxes in their rooms. That's when panic really struck them. Happily, right when they were ready to leave the city had come by rescuing them from unpacking for me.

BN: My colleagues who took a later flight than I are currently delayed in their last leg home. The kicker is that they're at an airport in the state that's only 1.5 hours from where we live. It's actually about the same to fly from the closer airport as it is to drive to the one farther away, but the cost breakdown with gas, parking, etc. usually favors flying out of the closer airport. Usually not a problem, but getting delayed so close to home just stinks.

I used to have to dress much nicer for work. My grandfather just looked at my jeans last week, and asked what on Earth was I doing, heading to work in them. It's been eight months since the dress code change!

GN/BN? We found a new manager for my store. Again. I was really hoping my co would get it. She turned the store around for the better a lot in the time she's been with us.

BN: A Lenten devotional project that I was spearheading at my church didn't come out quite the way I'd hoped: the font I used on my computer to design the cover wasn't supported on the church computer and defaulted to a horribly blah sans serif font, but the church secretary isn't computer savvy enough to have caught the problem before running all the copies. My smile for today:
I took a professional day today. Since I was in the building for the day, I greeted my kiddos as they came like normal. They knew I wasn't going to be there, except to pop in and grab materials when I needed them. Anywho... one of my boys that I sometimes have trouble with bounced in. "Miss W! Can I do my Angry Bird Warning today?" he asked. See, yesterday he went home yesterday and didn't get to write a prompt that went along with a writing unit we finished up yesterday. I'm so happy that he wanted to come in and write! It made my heart smile.

Background on the unit: My boys love anything that has to do with games and computers. I found and adapted a writing packet about Angry Birds. To start off the project we played the game on the SMARTboard (which I had to promise them we would do again at the next indoor recess-looks like tomorrow). Then they sat down and began their prewriting. Their words and descriptions were very creative. They had to create a new Angry Bird in writing. Then they wrote how to make an Angry Bird using a toilet paper roll and construction paper. The writings were pretty good. However, the warnings to the rest of the school were fantastic. Last Friday they actually created their Angry Bird. I'll have to take pictures tomorrow.

GN: I should sleep very well tonight.

BN: My mom slipped this afternoon.
BN: She dislocated two bones on her left leg.
GN: She went to the doctor and he popped the bones back into place.

If there is something special you want, you might have to get them online. If you want normal plates, then the DMV should have them on hand. I have specialty plates that support the school. You can do it, Eris. Just keep calm. My daughter panicked during the math portion, especially the algebra half, which is the only reason she didn't do well. We finally opted to have her take a non-credit algebra rather than suffer more testing. She did incredibly well and more important, it improved her self confidence.

Thank you, JP! Fortunately, I did fine, considering. I was able to choose which level of math I wanted to do, and I picked Pre-Algebra, because even though I've made it to Geometry, I'm a dummkopf who forgets everything. I did okay in the Pre-Algebra, and am qualified to take Pre-Algebra at the community college. Yay! Simple math is good with me.

I am most happy with my English scores, however. I got a 93 in the the reading portion and a 98 in the writing test! Woohoo! I am qualified to take English 1A, which means I don't have to do basic stuff! YAYYYY!!!! *throws confetti everywhere*

Now I just have to talk to a counselor and hope they'll accept me into classes. If not, I'll be prepared to go once I'm finished with high-school! :D

Tor/Forge E-book Titles to Go DRM-Free!!!

Tom Doherty Associates, publishers of Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen, today announced that by early July 2012, their entire list of e-books will be available DRM-free.

“Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time,” said president and publisher Tom Doherty. “They’re a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another.”

Congrats on finishing high-school! I have one semester of that awful institution left, and then I will graduate early. I am sorry about your cat, though - I know how tough it is to say good-bye.

GN: Just finished watching the solar eclipse, thanks to my dad's handy-dandy telescope and a filter on the lens (because it would really suck if we all went blind). We saw lots of lovely sunspots in addition to watching the eclipse. SO COOL!

All good news:

After four weeks on crutches, today I got the go ahead to start putting weight on the my leg! I can now carry things and go up and down stairs while standing!

Although things can change, it looks like next year I will be taking over our school media center and teaching a library/technology class. I am excited about this challenge and will need lots of advice from our resident media specialists (and everyone else for that matter).

BN: Got a most horrible haircut. My hair was getting longer and when I went in for my haircut she asked if 2 inches off would be okay. Sure, I can do 2 inches. She took off 6 inches. Thing is, this isn't the first time she's done this. I think it's time to find a new hairdresser. I can't fix it, and it looks horrible. I wanted to cry when I got home.

I think I will love mine, too -- but I'm kind of hating car shopping. Of course, most of what I'm hating is the logistical problem of dealing with the insurance company and the old car, and how to get it changed to a salvage title (my uncle wants it for the parts) and what to drive in the time between when I change the title on the old car and when I get the new car, etc.

And I saw a car identical to my old one yesterday (except for the great big dent in the side, of course) and it made me sad. I knew that I was going to have to replace my car eventually, but I had thought I'd be driving it for a few more years yet.

268 Yay! Good job on (knowing and) locating what you want. I know it is hard to be without your *ride*. A good friend of mine just went through the same stuff, but she was also searching for a new roommate and/or new home at the time. In addition, she was wearing a cast (broken fingers) and was still not driving herself to work when she bought the car. She is now settled in new location, decreased her commute and rent, and is ready for road trips in "new" car. Fingers are almost recovered and rehab is almost over.

I was feeling a little bit unreasonable, being picky about the color, but I decided that I am paying a lot of money for this, and will (I hope) have it for a long time, so I might as well get what I really want, and not settle for what's available just because I don't want to wait a few more days.

GN: We have people that want to rent our home. Hooray. We would have rather sold it, but this way our rent in IA is covered. Plus, we haven't had that many showings, just two or maybe three a month. Plus, the next door neighbors just dropped their price from $328,000 to $299,900 and orginially they listed at $348,000. Their house is the same as ours with just a few differences and we would have to have dropped ours significantly. This way, we have some time for the market to hopefully get better.
