1bookwormjulesThis year I plan on keeping up on my posting in the challenge. 11 in 11, I kept forgetting to post my reviews. I'm going to attempt 12 books in 12 categories this year, but if I read 6 books in each category I'll call it a success. I've also made my categories a little easier for me to complete this year as well. I think the Short Story one will be my hardest one to complete. 1 1001 Books (Will try to read only authors I haven't read before, but not required) 2 Around the World in 12 Books (12 Books from 12 different countries (Canada and the USA not included) - COMPLETED! 3 Authors A,B,C & X,Y,Z 4 TBR No More - COMPLETED! 5 Short Stories, Novellas, Anthologies Collections Galore - COMPLETED! 6 2012 Countdown - Read 1 book for every year in the last 12 years 7 Decades of Decades - Books from different decades (2000's not included) COMPLETED! 8 Canadian Award Winners (Canada Reads, Giller and Governer Generals Awards - 4 from each) 9 The Ones that Didn't Win (Short Lists and Long Lists from above, does not need to be 4 from each.) This year I will keep up with posting my reviews and progress here! 17bookwormjulesOne down, 143 to go! This is from the Authors A,BC & X,Y,Z Category. Zentner, Alexi - Touch My Review - Touch Overall it was an enjoyable read. Had some good magical realism elements to it. 19lkernaghRead your review of Touch over on the Alphabet Challenge. Thanks for the heads up on the magical realism. It still sounds like one I will find interesting and will place a hold on the copy I know my local library has. I am trying not to clutter up threads so I decided to just post my comment about Touch here here. ;-) 20bookwormjulesBook 2 - A book of poetry, my first book of poetry I've reviewed, and it was and accident I picked it up, turned out to be a good read. This book is listed in the 2012 countdown category. The Dream World - Alison Pick My Review 21bookwormjuleslkernagh - it was a good read, I hope you get a copy soon, it's a good choice if you like magical realism. 22bookwormjulesAnd book 3! Lets hope I keep this up! This one is from the Canadian Award Winners. While I didn't exactly enjoy the book I didn't hate it either, a little outside my usual reading comfort zone. Westernesque book - The Sisters Brothers - by Patrick deWitt My Review 23DeltaQueen50Welcome back, Julie! You are off to a great start. I read The Sisters Brothers last year and, I think I loved it more than you. I am a huge fan of westerns, and this stylized one hit all my "Yes" buttons. 24bookwormjules23 - Thanks, good to be back. If you enjoyed the Sisters Brothers, than you may enjoy The Seamstress. It's not exactly a Western, but the one plot line reminds me a lot of one. 25psuttoI also found it to be a bit forgettable, also not read a lot of westerns I wonder if that makes a difference 26bookwormjulespsutto - I wonder if it does too, nice to see others share similar thoughts on the book. 27bookwormjulesAdded book 4 (hopefully reviews for 5, 6 ,7 to follow soon!) 1001 Books to Read Before You Die - Oroonoko and Other Writings - Aphra Behn My Review Good book, an author ahead of her time, one of the first women writers and I think it's also one of the oldest books to appear on the 1001 books to read before you die list. 29bookwormjulesBook 6 - The One's That Didn't Win - 1993 Giller Finalist - For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down - David Adams Richards Finally finished the trilogy he wrote, enjoyed this one the best. 30lkernaghFound your posting over on the Alphabet Challenge first but wanted to leave my comment over here. Great review of For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down. I haven't read David Adams Richards' Miramichi trilogy yet but hope to get to it at some point. Looking forward to reading your comments of Mercy Among Children when you get to it! 31bookwormjules30 - It was a fairly good trilogy, I really enjoyed the writing, but took a while to get used to the plot and character development, it can be very slow at times. I hope you get a chance to read it soon. 32bookwormjulesBook 7 (since I forgot to post it earlier. Opps!) Through the Stargate and Beyond Category - Allegiance: Stargate Atlantis 18 - Amy Gridwold and Melissa Scott My Review - Stargate is a favourite TV series of mine, now my love for it is continued on into books - which for the most part, are well written and a great companion to the series. Book Number 8! (Hopefully 9 - 11 reviews will be written soon) From the Short Stories.... Category - The Lost Salt Gift of Blood - Alistair MacLeod My Review 33bookwormjules2012 Countdown - 2011 - Alone in the Classroom- Elizabeth Hay My Review Didn't enjoy this one much although I'd still recommend one of the author's other books - Late Nights on the Air. 34lkernaghGod to know.... I haven't read any of Hay's works and was undecided if I wanted to read Alone in the Classroom when I came across it in my local library's catalogue. 35bookwormjules34 - This one just wasn't as good as her other book I read. But the author is still worth reading. 36bookwormjulesBook 10 - Seriously Serious about reading books from a series (say that 5 times fast!) From the Giver Trilogy - Gathering Blue - Lois Lowry My Review Good companion book to a childhood favourite, I read the final installment of the series right after this one, and it was also really good, review to come soonish. Silly job got in the way! 37bookwormjulesBook 11 - 2012 Countdown Challenge 2004 - Messenger - Lois Lowry My Review And I finally finish a series - a book I was first introduce to when I was about 13 years old. (The Giver). Good wrap up to a great series - a good series for young readers. 38bookwormjulesThe One That Didn't Win category - Canada Reads - The Colony of Unrequited Dreams - Wayne Johnston My Review This was a fantastic historical fiction book. Highly recommend. Did a fantastic job at giving life to Newfoundland and its inhabitants. 39bookwormjulesAnother award winner, and well deserved - 2000 Giller Prize Winner - Anil's Ghost - Michael Ondaatje My Review 40bookwormjulesThrough the Stargate and Beyond - Transitions Stargate SG-1 18 - Sabine Bauer My Review A Stargate book that I didn't like, first time for everything I suppose. May be more of disappointed in, than dislike, but either way, not my favourite read. 41bookwormjulesShort Stories.... Category - Modern Classics Selected Short Stories by Virginia Woolf- Virginia Woolf My Review If you're looking for a short story collection, this one is a must read!! 42bookwormjulesAnd last review of January - from the 2012 Countdown category 2005 - A Long, Long Way - Sebastian Barry Another book I'd highly recommend. 43lkernaghHi Jules, getting caught up on everyone's threads and see you have been busy reading! I have been thinking about reading another Sebastian Barry book - the only one I have read so far is The Secret Scripture but I am a bit leery.... I found The Secret Scripture to be a bit annoying and it was only because Barry managed to completely change my feelings about the book in the in the final pages that I gave it the rating I did. 44bookwormjules43 - It was a good month for reading for me. I have only read the one book by the author, so I could't compare it to his other work, but this one is well done. I also need to get caught up on the threads, but the books made me neglect them I swear! 45The_HibernatorThanks for stopping by my thread. I really enjoyed The Giver trilogy, too, though I thought the first was by far the best. And it worked well as a stand-alone. I thought the end of The Giver was open for interpretation, and I totally interpreted it the other way! I was rather surprised when I read Gathering Blue because of that. 46bookwormjulesTwo more books added, - from the Decades of Decades Category - 1970s Offshore - From the Kobo Express Category - The Sense of Ending My Review - The Sense of Ending 47bookwormjulesTwo more books both from Kobo Express - both are short stories by Frank Delaney - The Druid: The Storytellers My Review - The Girl Who Lived on the Moon My Review 48bookwormjulesBook 22 - from The Seriously, Serious About Reading Books from a Series. - The 9th book in The Women of the Otherworld Series - Living With the Dead - Kelley Armstrong My Review Sadly this one didnt live up to some the other books in the series. 53bookwormjules30 down, 114 to go. 1001 Books to read before you die category Requiem for a Dream - Hubert Selby Jr. My Review 56bookwormjulesI've been really bad about updating this, and visiting others. For the most part I balanced out the individual categories and what I read, near the end there was a bit of a scramble trying to finish some categories, but otherwise it was a fun challenge. One I was closer than I thought I would be to finishing. | AboutThis topic is not marked as primarily about any work, author or other topic. TouchstonesWorks
