Arukiyomi's 1001 Books App

Wow! You rock, arukiyomi!
ETA: Oh, I just saw that I have to wait until 2/29. That's ok. You're still awesome.
For the absolute and complete 1st time I suddenly want an i-phone. Damn.
@ amaryann21: just added your query to the FAQs at http://1001booksapp.com/support
@ jfetting: hmmm... downgraded from rock to awesome.... I can live with that ;-)
@ BekkaJo: well you can't have mine cos I don't have one either!
AFAIK, you can run an iPhone app on an iPad using an emulator. That's pretty much all I know and maybe someone else here who has an iPad would confirm that.
However, once we get working on the cross-platform app from March, the aim is to have an app that will recognise what device it is on and adapt to that so that we have an app that recognises when it is on an ipad/other tablet and when it is on an iphone/other smartphone.
And you don't need to hold off until the app has all this functionality, we intend to add it through updates as we go along.
I have a totally "I know nothing about all this stuff" question. Will there be any way to import info from your spreadsheets to the app, or will we have to re-catalog everything?
hmm... well I defy anyone to make something that will import from a Microsoft product on a computer to an Apple product on a smartphone!
Sorry japaul22, you will have to do it all again. Having played with the app for a month or so now and entered in all 350 books or so that I had to for my list, I can tell you that it is much more fun and convenient to enter data on the app than it is on the spreadsheet though... especially the images!
Good news though is that we plan to enable server-side storage of your data for those that want this. That means, in future, even if you lose your phone, your data, once synced will be safe with us.
Once we've integrated that capability through a future update, you'll never have to re-enter your data again.... ever!
No problem! I think I knew that would be the answer. Won't deter me at all - looking forward to the app!
Whaddya mean I have to wait until the end of the month?? How can I possibly wait until then???
And, yes, you can run iPhone apps on the iPad, they're just small with lots of black space around them.
Love the idea of server-side storage of data, that'd be brilliant!
Looks like the app will do everything you could want and things you might not have even known you might want. Looking forward to trying it out. Will the cost be announced at the launch?
hey wookie... keep your hair on! I've been waiting months simply for the opportunity to tell you that this is going to happen.... and anyway, I'm out trekking through a PNG river valley for the next two weeks so can't release it before that's done with.
Cost will be announced at launch, yes perlle. Will keep you guessing on that one though... (aka... we haven't decided yet!)
And if you have it for an Android could you also get it going for the Nook Color, please! Nook runs on the Android platform, but I think one has to work with Barnes and Noble to get it offered there. I haven't bricked my Color, yet.
As a Droid and Kindle Fire user, I'll second (third, fourth) the request for an app we can use. And how about I put in the earliest request for whatever else you do in the future so it'll be done for Droid first? :)
we're working with iPhone because I found someone to help me do that coding and that was what my blog commenters requested first. From March, I'll be working with a developer to port this app from iPhone only to run on Adobe Air. We'll simply do this through updates so that iPhone users shouldn't notice much difference as we enable this functionality. Once we've done this, it will run on anything that runs Flash.
From that point on, we will not be going back to iOS but will stick with code that will work on most devices.
I got out of jury duty today, and I just downloaded this app. I hope the rest of my day goes this well!
Wow, what a great app :) ! It's even better than I expected (and I expected a lot ;))
Thank you very much for this app!
Ooooooh, it's fantastic! I'm going to have lots of fun setting this up!
thanks for the feedback everyone. If you want the latest news on the app and the opportunity to Shape the Future, check out our Facebook page
Loving the app, thanks arukiyomi! Spent this morning on the bus updating all my stats, not reading! :)
yeah you and me both wookie except that I'm making the app and updating it rather than reading!
anyway... I wanted to thank everyone for your support so far and ask a favour. I've set up a Facebook page for the app and I need at least 30 people to "Like" it before I get stats on the page. So far, there's 18.
If you "like" the page, you'll get our updates in your FB news feed.
And if you don't have an iPhone you will still want to follow the news because you'll want to know when we release it for Android, etc...
see message 24 above for the link
yay... thanks guys... we're up to 28 likes there... two more and I can see stats!
You should have 30 now! Looking forward to the android version. Even though it will be a while :-)
we are working on android as I type... and YES I can see the stats. Should have some news for all you non iPhone people (i.e. me myself!) next week. Stay tuned on FB.
I'm getting an iPhone this afternoon, so this will be my first app. Looks great! Now I need to figure out how to get my LT wishlist on my phone too.
wow... we feel very privileged! We're working on adding tag functionality so if books on your LT wishlist are on the 1001 list anywhere then eventually, you'll be able to tag them..... and eventually, share this list with others from the app.... but that's a bit over the horizon at the moment...
Hey, I have to ask. You didn't get an iPhone just so you could get the app did you? Did you? ;-)
#34 - Sorry, no. I didn't really want an iPhone, but I needed a new cell phone, and I'm having problems with a lemon of an iPod that I have, and my daughter just got an iPhone, so I figured I can just get her to set everything up for me (that way I have more time to read books).
just a FYI for those who have the Books App and have enjoyed it, you might also enjoy the Movies App which we released today:
If you have both apps, clicking a cross-ref icon of a movie based on a book in the 1001 books list will open that title in the books app.
#36 Thanks for that. I've downloaded it and will start playing with it today. My interest in the "1001 movies" goes back many years and so far I've watched 819 of them, with another 127 on my book shelves at home. No spare time at home these days though with a 5 month old daughter so only managed to watch 3 this year.
BTW Love the 1001 Books app. Really helpful when I'm out at book sales to quickly search whether a book is on the list and whether I've already got access to it (I use the Notes field to document all the books in my local public library). Keep up the good work
819??? Wow... That's impressive!
I've been thinking about also starting on the movies list, but I have to admit that I'm more of a reader than a movie-watcher... I have found that the past years I've had very little patience with movies, I easily get bored, then pause them to go do something else, and then forget about it altogether, until days later I realise I still need to watch the rest of the movie, and then I usually just leave it at that :/
Maybe it's something I can do when I'm older ;)
#38 The commitment with a movie is very different from a book. The latter takes a lot longer to complete of course, but the images and atmosphere are in your head so it's a lot easier to dip in and out of. With a movie you're in the director's hands so you need to set aside the time to see it in one session. There is a lot of overlap between the two lists but I almost invariably end up preferring the book version because you have so much more ownership of the characters and images.
the overlap between the two lists is, at my last count, 71. That is if you include both movies and books from any edition.
sorry to have to announce this... http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?p=3721
So sorry, but I hope you will keep posting your book reviews. I find them very refreshing and interesting.
Searching for the app on my iPhone at work and can't find it. Don't have iTunes on work computer will have to try at home.
I cannot seem to download the spreadsheet and I reallly could use one!
@ joeinma - do you mean that you paid for it and now it's no longer on your phone? I desperately hope that removing them from sale doesn't mean the apps get removed from your phones!
Hey guys, I've made a petition. Would you sign it and repost it somewhere (i.e. facebook or something)?
thanks for your support
Signed it! I hope the petition helps. I love the app and the spreadsheets, and it is too bad that this Quintessence group is shutting you down.
No, I was searching in the app store so I can purchase it.
Oh...I see in your reply why I can't find it, it's not for sale anymore?
right joeinma the publisher's asked me to remove it early last Tuesday when they sent me an email telling me I was in breach of copyright. So, if you already have it, you're privileged. If you don't, you won't be able to get a copy until the publishers lift their restriction on it. Hopefully the petition (aMAzing comments on their guys!!!) will persuade them if I can't.
Hi everyone... major announcement. I'll shortly be taking the petition offline. It's served it's purpose and I'm now entering into discussions with the publishers. These discussions, I'm sure you'll understand have to be confidential. As a result, having the petition out there in a public forum will not help these discussions.
In time, I'll have news. It may take weeks or months but I'll have news.
I can't express my thanks to you all for your support. You are truly amazing!
I keep my fingers crossed for your discussion. Maybe it will all come to a good end for all participants. Good luck!
Hope it all works out! I won't be buying the 2012 edition unless I can have a spreadsheet to keep track of all the changes....
I think the fact that you're talking with someone about it shows some progress! Good luck!
I really really really hope that this works out, I want to buy the app!!!!!!!!!
I have trodden the sacred halls of Quintessence Editions and seen floor to ceiling wall to wall bookshelves with every permutation of 1001 books you could possibly imagine.... and I bring news to the faithful:
The books app should be back for the iPhone around UK springtime i.e. in 3 months or so. For those that are interested, we hope to re-releasing the movies app in October to coincide with a new edition of the movies list which will be published in the US by Barrons.
Edited to add: I'll also have spreadsheets available for both lists in a few months I hope although that's taking a back seat to the apps right now. And no, Android will not be supported until someone gives me $20,000 ;-)
Great news arukiyomi!
I use the books app frequently (when I'm trawling bookshops for List books) and it will be great to see it back available for others.
I'm in favor of a fundraiser to get the Android app in the works. Bake sale, anyone? ;)
15 months to the day since it was taken offline, the 1001 Books App is back:
Congratulations on the app! I'm also looking at the 1001 movies one... :)
I downloaded it immediately and it's as great as I hoped. But, I did find some bugs, I think:
- when I mark books as "read", the next time I open the app half of them is back to "no status" again. Kind of frustrating...
- when I want to upload a photo from my Photo Library, the app shuts down and I have to start all over again
Is it just me having these problems?
I do have one other user who has contacted me to let me know that the are having a similar issue with the photo adding. I've forwarded your comment to the guy who does our coding. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon with an update. In the meantime, could you let me know what device you're using it on and what iOS version you have?
thanks and sorry you are encountering problems.
Thx, Arukiyomi! I have an iPhone 5 with version OS7 on it. I hope your man can solve it. I am looking forward to use your wonderful, long awaited app!
I purchased the original app that was taken offline. Do I need to purchase the new one too in order to get the latest updates? I put a lot into that one and wish there was a way to avoid starting over.
You're not the only one nlgeorge. I too had invested quite a bit in the original app!
Due to licensing issues and my contract with the publishers, we had to create and issue a completely new app. You can continue to use the old app under iOS6 but it will look weird under iOS7 and styling issues will mean it will be very difficult to use.
So, yes, purchasing the app again is the only way to get future updates. But, hey, we're list obsessed right and like nothing better than tinkering with our toys!
I downloaded this the other day and love it! I spent pretty much all of yesterday evening updating my progress on it, and even putting cover photos on all the books I've read do far..great fun.
I did have some trouble with the app crashing when adding photos. If I added a photo to a book, then clicked back to the full list and selected another title as soon as I clicked the photo area the app would crash every time. However, if I added a photo and used the up/down arrows to move onto the next book the app didn't crash. Didn't cause me any headaches, but thought you'd like to know the exact sequence that led to the crash.
Thanks for making this happen arukiyomi!
Hey Jonny, thanks so much for the positive report... you even reported a bug positively! You make my work so much easier! Just to let you know that we have two beta testers who are working with us to isolate this bug. We didn't find it in the extensive testing we did but, thanks to your great bug report, I have been able to replicate it. That's a great step forward.
FYI, when the bug is fixed, we'll issue an update and that will not delete any of the data you've entered but will make sure that your app will work perfectly from then on.
quite additional comment to say that I've just installed our latest beta version myself and it seems that it has solved the crashing issue with adding photos. I'm confident that we'll have this update out to you in the next few days. Thanks for your patience and support.
Could I please encourage those of you who have the app to leave a review on iTunes? At the moment, we only have one negative review due to this crash issue and that's a shame if you are enjoying the app otherwise. Thanks
I have been one of the beta testers and the problem was solved immediately! The app works perfectly now and I have to stop myself from using it all day long! Thanks Arukiyomi! I'll definitely post a review on iTunes!
Thanks for your work in getting this up and running again! I lost the old version when I got a new phone and it was unsettling not having a 1001 resource every where I went. I love the new look (not that the old version wasn't great too)! I was able to carve out a chunk of time to get my books entered and it was like a walk down memory lane. Will put it on my to-do list to leave an iTunes review.
I found the old version in the list of purchased apps so I have the old version and the new. So if you have a new phone go into the purchased items in the app store and it should be there. I like the old for its connection to Wikipedia and LT. I like the new app because it is up to date and will be able to be kept up to date. Thanks Arukiyomi! I run by i phone app on my i pad all the time and I make it larger and it works just fine (the same as on the phone). My request is that you would make them so they cross update. When you add to the phone it will also update to i-pad and visa versa. Think that requires some kind of i cloud thing.
yes that kind of functionality, which I'd love to have implemented, does require server-side data storage. And, as we our coder has recently left the project... ahem... we won't be going down that road anytime soon despite my vision being somewhere over the horizon. Good to know it works well on the iPad though and that you can still use the first version (although if you didn't buy it at the time, you won't be able to anymore).
recently I have found that it no longer will go to the Wikipedia page but you still get the inital information. I suspect there will come a time I will dump it but for now I keep it for what I can still get from it.
I finally arrived in the world of touchscreen devices today, I bought an iPad mini.... And first thing I am trying to find your app, and I can't... :(
Is it available only on iTunes US?
got it - thank you! I tried the other links here and on your website and also searched for the title, but all I got before was a white square. now I got some " list work" to do, yay :)
new version now available in iTunes: v1.1
Version 1.1 adds the following functionality:
- Sync your data to back it up or transfer it between iOS devices.
- Quickly navigate 1001+ list items with a new scroll handle in List View.
- Sort list by book length.
- Search keyboard now has a Done button to cancel it if needed.
Version 1.1 fixes the following:
- Tapping list chooser when in search mode used to mean the search keyboard hid the list spinner. Not anymore.
Boring but important for Version 1.1:
>81 arukiyomi: Already updated my app and enjoying the changes, particularly the scroll bar.
ah... that's great. Yes, since I introduced that it's become one of my own fave features!
just FYI everyone... I had to pull the sync feature as one user experienced issues with it. I'll let you know when it's available again.
Thanks for updating the app. I've used it since and noticed some of the changes.
For those of you interested in having an Android version of the 1001 Books App, check out the new Kickstarter project at
... and please spread the word, even if you don't feel you can contribute.
Looks like if it's not on Amazon's Appstore, it should be still possible but maybe complicated. http://uk.pcmag.com/tablets/11296/news/how-to-run-free-android-apps-on-the-kindl...
