I've come across some in my general reading - Dune, Left Hand of Darkness, Rendezvous with Rama, The Dispossessed, The Forever War, Man Plus, Gateway, Dreamsnake, The Claw of the Conciliator Doomsday Book, Red Mars, American Gods - but now this year alternating with other reading I'm going try to get through every winner.
So far Babel-17, Flowers for Algernon, Ringworld, A Time of Changes.
Babel-17 was a rollicking adventure, I definitely wish it had been longer or more written about the universe and characters. Algernon was a bit maudlin. Did not like Ringworld too densely Hard SF - the jargon and tech came before the characters and dialogue and story. Time of Changes felt really dated with its hippy mind expansion.
Anyone else try this with the Nebula or Hugo or World Fantasy Award or Locus? How did you go?

Nice plan. I just had a look through the Nebula list and hadn't read nearly as many as I figured I would have — only about a dozen of them. I recall liking Ringworld quite a bit, but then that was probably 12 years ago that I read it.

If you'll forgive a little trip down memory lane... I always get a chuckle when Flowers for Algernon comes up. It was assigned reading in 7th or 8th grade. One of my classmates was reading at home when his father (a preacher) happened to glance over his shoulder. I guess the word "nipples" must have jumped off the page at him. He made a big stink about us reading a "sex book" and got the reading assignment pulled. Then my parents wanted to talk to me about what was in the book, but I told them I hadn't read that part yet. Of course I'd read the whole thing soon after it was handed out but it was much less awkward to feign ignorance. Looking back, it was pretty tame stuff but I didn't really care to discuss it with my parents if it could be avoided.

on library thing you can go to home, statistics, common knowledge, awards and it should list the nebula winners and nominees that you have in your library. I think this is a cool feature on LT.

Ive only read 8 winners and 7 others that were nominated. I have a number unread in my library.

I've read all 60 of the Hugo's, 30 out of 47 Nebula's, 35 out of 41 Locus (SF) awards. I'm rather less successful on the Campbell, Clarke, BSFA etc.
I use a website called World Without End to track my progress. It shows all the winners and nominees for all the major SF and Fantasy awards plus many of the "Lists" such as Locus SF All-time, David Pringle etc and all in book cover format. I have a free account and mark down what I've read, what I'm reading and whats on my TBR. Highly recommended for any listophile.

The award description for the Nebula award describes the process as it was until a few years ago. Rolling Eligability and the Preliminary ballot no longer exist. Does anyone know the new process well enough to rewrite the description.

The Term nominee is very vague for both the Hugos and the Nebulas. For the Hugos during the nomination phase eligible persons can nominate up to 5 works in each catagory. The 5 most nominated go onto the ballot, after the award the top 15 nominated works in each catagory are named. For this reason I use tag of Hugo Ballot rather than Hugo Nominee. Similarly with the Nebula (old style) anything on the Preliminary ballot has been nominated. I therfore tag with Nebula Final. But I am not changing all that CK.
