I'm currently in Belém, Brazil, located at the mouth of the Amazon river system and saw some beautiful macaws this morning. They're on my mind so let's see if our resident crambologists can guess what word that rhymes with macaw I'm thinking of.

Many years ago, 86 and 99 had a nemesis whose hand had been replaced by a magnet. This was so long ago that his inability to pronounce his name properly was thought funny. Not sure it could be done today.

Good thing that I'm old enough to remember Get Smart. I've often thought of putting a cheap cell phone in the sole of an old shoe so I could be just like Max. And I remember the Claw, too, but Crambo might not.

I think if the tacky technique mentioned in #2 was used today, it would stick in peoples' crops.

Does it describe a bit of quality time with the odd walrus tusk or extracted whale's tooth, whatever you happen to have handy?

To construct a rhyme without a __ __ __ __ is quite
A feat, but thereʻs more chance of getting it right
In a DI-syllable, than in a TRI-
Can I say the current correct guess is one of my - - --
Er -- one of mine? Anyway the guess has three
Consonants and only one vowel, see?
And not to inspire you with the terror
Of going, beyond this, hintless: "error"
Is a near-synomym, or as close
As I can get to one. Is it one of those
Hated "others" Or, have I given enough
Of a hint -- or merely another bluff?

On 7, and 8, line 4:

"Defect" beats "error" as a near syn-
-onym of " __ __ __ __"? Can you pin
It down now?
If not, how
Can I get closer to it? Pundit Jacques Barzun
Says "name ALL the synonym-pairs in English and
Youʻll soon
Run out of pairs, because thereʻs really only one
Such* in the language! So the search can be fun!

*Barzun says that "Furze / Gorse" is the only
pair in which each means EXCTLY the same as the other.

I"Ve never seen or heard __ __ __ __
used wihout the word "Cole"
Preceding it, save once in a poem by ole
Ogden Nash
(and youʻve observed the clash
Of his rhyme-schemes with mine),
But it was just imitation all the time;
So, he may accuse me of flattery*,
Wherever he is -- hardly of assault and battery.

*flattery: an old aphorism says that imitation is the
sincerest form of this.

As an etymological trinket, this noun is derived either from a redundant Middle English phrase meaning "give gift" or from a French baby-talk word for "toy."

"Iʻll give you 50 cents a day,
Your washing and all* __ __ __ __.**
Youʻll feel quite like a different man,
When you leave old Arkansaw!"
from "Sanford Barney", Folk song of the 1890s

meant "well-known" or "well-liked".
** "__ __ __ __" IS in my dictionary, and not even
(as I was expecting) marked "slang" or "substandard".

#26 - Wow, I haven't heard that one in years! Do you think it's a Canadian thing? It certainly was current in the schoolyards in Vancouver when I was growing up. I see that all but 3 of the "Nots" ( guesses) DO end
in -aw. (And, of those, "baccarat" is a doubtful rhyme.)

John Gotti was quoted as saying "Weʻll whack anyone that says the words ʻ__ __ Cosa Nostraʻ inside a court room. They donʻt even have to say ʻ__ __ Cosa Nostraʻ:
weʻll whack them if they just say ʻ__ __ʻ!"
"__ __" is not a great rhyme, but itʻs as good as "baccarat", and it probably is in English dictionaries, though not in the Gottian meaning.

RE #28 - I'm in agreement that neither baccarat nor La are good rhymes for macaw, but with all the different regional pronunciations of English in the world, I'd hate to say that for some people they aren't. In my own variation of English law rhymes with macaw, but la doesn't. In any case, La isn't Crambo's word.

Why Robert Loblaw doesn't like to be called Bob.

31rolandperkins
Edited: May 10, 2012, 4:30pm

"__ __ __ __ __ __" , if pronounced as in French, would rhyme with the doubtful "baccarat" and "la". I was assuming that, in English, it rhymes
with "Bay Bus" (though the penultimate letter isnʻt -u-).
(Does anyone ever actually SAY "__ __ __ __ __ __"? Iʻve seen it in print, but donʻt recall ever hearing it.) It means an impromptu minor upheaval or scuffle, and
is from an Italian verb "__ __ __ __ __ __ sare" which became the
noun "__ __ __ __ __ __" in 18th c. French.
