Plot:
The story is from the point of view of the owner of the dog.
A Human Base or Colony is raided by Aliens while the occupants are elsewhere.
It is a data gathering mission to decide if first contact is a good idea.
They capture a Dog along with other artefacts.
They read it's mind and based on the relationship between the Dog and it's owner
they proceed with first contact.
Date:
Probably 1960's to 1970's.
It may have been Juvenile SF and was possibly by Heinlein.
