Sally Ride, America's first woman into space, dead from pancreatic cancer at 61.

I recently re-read The Right Stuff. Is there a book about the 70s and 80s space program that's remotely as good?

This breaks my heart. She was my hero. And I know from experience how awful pancreatic cancer is.

Ride, Sally. To the stars.

She was a very special person, although she never acted, or talked, as if she was. What a babe! Brilliant, inquisitive, energetic and, above all, immune to the doubts and derision of others.

Considering the impediments she faced, socially and professionally, she may be as big a pioneer (maybe bigger) than Shepard or Glenn.
