Salve, fair reader and welcome to my thread! I am Eris, a teenaged aspiring writer and lover of books. My reading tastes can change abruptly, depending on what I find interesting at the moment, but I generally fancy YA, classics, comics, books about Latin, Catholic literature, fairy tales, mythology, poetry, and books about European history.

Who am I? I make far too many Doctor Who references in ordinary conversation (just in case you're wondering, my favorite Doctors are the Tenth, Eleventh, Ninth, Fourth, Second, and Eighth, although I love them all!), and I am a devoted fan of the original Sherlock Holmes books, the Jeremy Brett television series, and the ongoing "Sherlock" television show from BBC. I will probably be fangirling about that later this year when the third series comes out. ^_^ Beware: I am very fond of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I am also developing a strong affection for Firefly and Star Trek - Picard is best captain. Writing is my life, I make rosaries, I love to paint and draw, and I dabble in calligraphy, knitting, Celtic knots, and t-shirt designs. I like using emoticons and the word "ducky."

I participated in the 75 group last year, reading almost 50 books. I hope to do better than last year, though, especially when it comes to reviews, so I hope you join me for the adventure! Previous threads can be found here:

IN WHICH I ATTEMPT TO BE ORGANIZED (Let's see how long that little whimsical idea lasts.)

GOALS FOR 2013

-Read more books off my own shelf than books from the library. It's about time that my books stop looking pretty and start becoming family.

-Read The Brothers Karamasov with Paul once March rolls around.

-Don't get addicted to the internet so much, and actually read more instead of watching Big Bang Theory and Doctor Who clips on YouTube.

-Post pretty pictures of my crafts, drawings, paintings, and other artistic endeavors! :D

-Do more reviews. I really failed at this towards the end of last year, and I think this was because I was making them too long, which got tiring. I need to learn brevity. So, expect more reviews, but shorter (i.e. more readable) ones.

Salve to you too, Eris. There seems to be a very high percentage of Dr. Who fans here on LT - you're making it very hard for me not to start watching.
I love SHerlock too, but I must admit I've never read any of the books and I've only watched a couple of the earlier films (The Hound of the Baskervilles and some other that I can't remember) but I'm planning on rectifying that as best I can this year - I have a Sherlock theme planned for December.

Looking forward to reading more about your reading!

Thank you for coming to this new thread! I am delighted to have new visitors. :)

Yes, you should start watching Doctor Who! It's a show that is perfect for everyone, in my opinion. This is a pretty good video just to get you started; it's of a Whovian giving a brief overview of what the show is about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOnX_ayD6O4

As far as watching the show goes, I recommend starting with the episode called "The Eleventh Hour" which is the first episode of the fifth series, and it features a new Doctor (the Eleventh - oh, do I ever love him). It's a good starting point and gets you used to the weirdness of Doctor Who. After that, you can continue with the fifth series, or go back and watch episodes from the previous two Doctors. The Tenth Doctor, in particular, is a foxy, quirky, and devilish Time Lord who cannot be missed. I highly recommend, Blink, The Girl in the Fireplace, Dalek, The Empty Child, and Silence in the Library.

Ooooh, your Sherlock themed month sounds like fun! Maybe I'll do a reread of a lot of the Sherlock Holmes stories during that month, too, in honor of "Sherlock" (hopefully) returning. I'll have to check your thread when I get the chance.

4. Thanks for the tip. I'll remember that when I have time enough to start watching. I have watched one episode - the first one with Christopher Eccleston - I was thoroughly confused and never watched any other episodes. But the show has been popping up everywhere and I can't help but feel like I'm missing out on something.

Paws - I hope you like the show when you get the chance to watch it! The first episode I ever watched had me completely confused, but I kept at it, and by the third episode I was hooked.

Majkia - Woo! :D 'Tis a phrase of great power and wisdom, and consolation to the soul in times of need.

Dr. Neutron - Thank you for stopping by! I had no idea you were a Whovian, so now I am super happy.

Kathy - Yay! I'm happy you'll be here, Kathy.

Paul - I cannot wait, too!

Stasia - I'm glad to be back, too. :)

Richard - It's so wonderful to see you here! The Doctor's Wife was an Eleventh Doctor episode, actually, but I agree, that episode was one of the best. It was one of the first episodes I ever saw, and just thinking about it makes me laugh/cry/smile/change my profile picture to one of Sexy. Sigh...

Richard - I wish I was! No television, unfortunately. I watch all the new Doctor Who episodes all because of the kindness of people who upload them to YouTube. They get taken down in a day or so, of course, but I'm pretty quick at watching them.

Thank you for coming over to this thread, Paul, Kathy, Foggi, Streamsong, and Nora, and a happy new year to everyone! May this year be filled with new discoveries, five star books, "Sherlock" Series 3 coming out on time, a marvelous 50th anniversary for Doctor Who, and the continued please of everyone's company here at the 75ers. I love you guys!

I finished last year's reading an hour before midnight on December 31st, with A Wrinkle in Time becoming my fiftieth book read. Yay! I may have not made it to 75, but at least I didn't finish miserably. I will try to beat that number this year.

Right now I have started off the new year by buying two books, both of which are about scriptwriting. That medium of writing has always fascinated me, and I've often wondered how a script is put together. The books are The Screenwriter's Bible, by David Trottier and Inception: The Shooting Script, by the immortal Christopher Nolan. I am currently reading the Inception script, and it is fascinating! Not only am I learning the language that goes into creating a script, but the script is exciting to read, even without the visuals. I loved Inception, so I'm happy to be learning a bit about scriptwriting from one of the best directors out there.

31. Smiling because I liked it (and I tend to love silliness so don't mind at all).
And I liked the Doctor too. I liked Matt Smith from before, so that obviously helps - and it is my understanding that Doctor #11 sometimes wears a fez (I've seen pictures). I love anyone who wears a fez so I can't help but love him.

Congratulations, Paws! Welcome to the Who Family. If you want a good episode to watch next, please let me know, and if you have any questions, be unafraid to ask. As you can see, I like talking about Doctor Who way too often.

Fezes are cool. Although, unfortunately, the fez was murdered, as you will see at the end of Series 5.

35PawsforThought
Jan 1, 2013, 3:53 pm

34. NOOOOO! You can't murder a fez! How could they?

I think I'll go back and watch from the beginning, I like watching these kinds of things in order.

Seeing as I've just started watching Warehouse 13 (majkia's fault) and am also re-watching MacGyver from the start, I wonder if I'll have any time at all to read this year...

36ErisofDiscord
Jan 1, 2013, 4:07 pm

The fez was murdered because Steven Moffat is a cruel man.

Going back to the beginning sounds like a good idea! There are a couple of "meh" episodes, but there are soooo many good ones that cannot be missed. I hope you enjoy your adventures in Doctor Who! Even though that probably means that it will become more and more difficult to read. :)

37PawsforThought
Jan 1, 2013, 4:16 pm

I think I'll have to set myself goals, like "I have to read at least so and so many pages before I'm allowed to watch any TV". It's a good thing regular TV schedules haven't started just yet or I'd be completely f*cked. (Sorry, I'm a potty mouth.)

1. Inception: The Shooting Script, by Christopher Nolan

Reading the script to Inception is just as absorbing and exciting as watching the movie, and I was able to pick up on things in the script that I missed in the movie (such as knowing whose mind we were actually in through each of the dream levels). In addition to the script the book has a selection of scenes from the storyboard and full color, gorgeously rendered concept art. At the beginning of the book Christopher Nolan was interviewed by his brother, Jonathan, and the two have an interesting philosophical discussion about the meaning behind the movie.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the filmmaking process, and to people interested in scriptwriting (like me!).

46ErisofDiscord
Jan 3, 2013, 5:15 pm

There, that short blurb was much easier to do than a full scale long review! Hopefully I can keep this up, and only go on for long rambles when I need to.

Paws - My brother and dad are the same way - they can't stand bow ties, and they can't tie them. My mom and I are the only ones in the family who can tie bow ties!

Donna - Thank you so much for commenting, Donna! You make my thread respectable. ;) Good luck in your reading!

Paul - I love that joke. Every time I hear it it gets sweeter. And wow, I am glad that the Troughton legacy is continuing! I am getting to know the Second Doctor, and he is wonderful. He's so mellow and charming, and his recorder skills are rad.

Micky - I've heard of the Nerdfighter community, and I think I would probably enjoy it... It's just that I kind of feel uncomfortable in groups that focus on being nerdy and smart. I like being alone and nerdy. That sounds so weird when I write it! Maybe one day I'll become an active Nerdfighter - for now I guess I just like being a part of LibraryThing and Goodreads (LT in particular).

47PawsforThought
Jan 3, 2013, 5:30 pm

46. No one in my family can tie bow ties - ready-tied is the only way if there is a need for them (which is extremely rare).
I'm good at neck tie tying, though. My dad taught me when I was five (daddy's girl wanted to do everything he did, including wearing ties and shaving off the beard).

I get what you mean about wanting to be a "lonely nerd". I think it's my way of deluding myself into thinking I'm somehow special - if I were to meet a whole community of nerdy people like myself I'd realise how common I am and get downhearted. LT is enough for me.

48ErisofDiscord

#47 - Aw, that is so cute! :D My dad didn't teach me those things, but he did teach me about astronomy and how to use a telescope.

if I were to meet a whole community of nerdy people like myself I'd realise how common I am and get downhearted. That is probably a reason why I don't want to be a Nerdfighter deep inside myself. I also just love learning by myself and I hate doing it with other people - it's the homeschooling spirit, I guess. Independent to the end! We're stubborn like that.

Paws - My dad was a fantastic teacher of astronomy! He didn't just show us planets and the moon (blah blah blah, those bored him) - he went for the deep space objects. He taught me observational skills that I'll take with me for the rest of my life. I love him. :)

Micky - I occasionally watch the Vlogbrothers vids and they're usually really good! The "Hitler and Sex" one had me cackling with laughter for ten minutes or so.

Kathy - Yes. Yes. Yes. Please do it, Jo. Please. Because if this was almost a thing:

From a magazine interview with Russell T Davies:

... then she has to write a story. I mean, she's been referenced in the show twice, so it should definitely happen.

>53 ErisofDiscord: Yeah, that's a good vid. Although every time I read the title, I do John's theme tune in my head.

We Wholockers were very happy with The Snowmen, I assure you. The only think that would've made it better would have been Benedict marching out there at first, and then the Doctor shoving him aside saying "Oy! Wrong show! What is wrong with you?" On second thought, maybe it's best that they didn't do that.

Sorry guys for being so late in responding! The last few days have been... confusing. I feel happy sometimes, and I've been writing busily on this story I have planned in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, so that's been nice. I have also been busily Whovinizing some random thread that a troll made on Goodreads, so that's fun. I sound happy, and I feel happy, but then I get sad and then I get confused.

WARNING: 'TIS A CONFUSED BLAH BLAH RAMBLE THAT I SHOULD REALLY DELETE INSTEAD OF POSTING

My great-aunt died yesterday, on the Epiphany, after she had a stroke and smashed her face in, but I had cried all my tears out the day before she died. For some reason I felt fine yesterday and I joked around happily on the internet, and then I would cry at night. I didn't know her as well as I should have, and I feel guilty that I didn't. Apparently she kept all the cards and letters I had ever sent her on the mantle, and now I wish I had sent her more. I wish she had gotten to know me as a teen instead of as just a kid, and I wish I had gotten to know her as a person.

It frustrates me that we lived so far apart, and that my aunt didn't come to live with my family. It frustrates me even more that we cannot go to her funeral because we cannot afford it. I am frustrated because her death could've been preventable, and if only she hadn't been so stubborn she would've survived. She wanted to live alone, despite the fact that she was in her late 80s, and she had just gone through surgery. She had her life and she was determined to live it, without letting anyone help her.

So yeah... that's it. My dad talked to her shortly before she had her accident and stroke, and her last words to him were "That's my story and I'm sticking to it." Hopefully someday I'll be able to talk to her more and not be haunted by words I should've said.

I'll respond to your comments later (thanks for not forgetting me! I'm sorry I haven't been a better hostess), but right now I have to go help my mom make dinner.

Yay, dinner is easy tonight! Just stuff on the grill and rice. Easy. Just waiting for Dad to come home.

Kathy - Thank you, Kathy. I'm such a little ray of sunshine, aren't I? I know I'll be fine - sometimes I feel great (and I feel guilty for the times that I feel happy) and then I get sad. She was a great lady, and I wish I had known her better. If only things in life were different. Oh, well, enough of my emotional drivelings! Time to respond to all of your wonderful comments.

Paws - Missing Sherlock is so easy to do! Sometimes everything reminds me of that show, although I must admit that Doctor Who has helped with the wait. Now I'm waiting for Doctor Who... a fan can never win.

Kathy - It would be funny! Almost like that time when River Song crashed that Nazi party in Let's Kill Hitler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a5VHsQWIPM Only without the automatic rifles and asking everyone to strip naked.

Stasia - You must! I should warn you, though - that show can get very addicting.

Nora - Haha! I do enjoy the fact that the Dowager and McGonogall are played by the same lady. Maggie Smith is so talanted. I should really watch Downton Abbey someday. To YouTube I must go to see from clips if I like it!

Kathy - Oh, yes, Neil Gaiman simply must do another project. If it weren't for his lack of working in television, I would also want him to take over as showrunner when Moffat retires. Speaking of Moffat, this video was very enjoyable and answered a lot of questions I was wondering about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eu5xtc-x3k

Is that his son interviewing him? Cute!

I think you'd adore DA. It's soapy, but just so darn beautiful and intriguing, with enough humor and naughtiness to keep it from being dry.

Shirley MacLaine stars as the "other grandmother" in this new season, and I'm in love with her character. She really does a good job of stirring up the stuffy English and saying all the things we the viewers are already yelling at our screens. :D Plus, she gets under Maggie Smith's skin so well!

I have Amz prime (where DA is free to watch, got any connections?) and I've watched several British period dramas recently. They seem to all have the same cast, lol. But I just can't get enough.

Keep your chin up, Eris, and think of all the wonderful people you have in your life who love you, and remember to tell them how much they mean to you too! Never feel guilty for feeling happy. No matter what, I believe your aunt would never want you to be so hard on yourself.

How lucky your aunt was to be able to live at home until something catastrophic happened and she passed on. My almost 87 yo father has been in a nursing home for a year, dying by inches. To be independent until the end is a blessing.

Death is not the end. She knows how you feel and what you'd like to have said to her. She's probably known it for years. :-) The best thing you can do now is to remember her with happiness and love.

The picture of David inspired me to look up his performance in Hamlet, by the way, and I managed to find the whole thing. I am 45 minutes in and I am in awe. It's wonderful how I'm able to pick up on subtleties through the actors portrayals that I missed while reading the play.

Streamsong and Roni - True. She wouldn't have had it any other way. I can accept that. At least it wasn't a slow death by cancer that just ate away at everything inside you like it did with my grandparents. There are worse ways to go. She was feisty and wonderful and I'm glad she lived the life she wanted. My dad got to speak with her over the phone shortly before she fell, and her last words to him were "That's my story and I'm sticking to it." I applaud her for that. :)

Very sorry to hear your loss, but I am the same as the others in being glad she was able to live and die in a manner she would have chosen. Nursing homes and a long slow decline scare me far more than death does.

As for the guilt and regret - something I think all of us feel when we lose someone. I know I always have. I haven't necessarily reconciled myself to some of the feelings around some people, but I try to learn so that I appreciate those I have with me more often, and do my best to make sure I won't be feeling the same when they pass away. Never possible, but at least we can try.

Also, I remind myself that they loved me, and wouldn't want me to feel regret in my memories of them. However much we believe we failed them or let them down. I'm sure she knows how you feel about her.

Take care.

I'm so sorry to hear about your great-aunt. Losing someone is always hard, whether you were close to them or not as close as you might have wanted to be. And a guilty conscience is quite common - but remember that she obviously appreciated the time you did spend together.

And you should absolutely watch Downton! Such a great show (and so much prettyness! The house! The clothes! Matthew Crawley!)

Eris, finally found your thread. So sorry to hear about your great-aunt - I can't really do more than echo what other people have said. It's so hard not to feel that you couldn't have done more for someone before they died but tried not to beat yourself up about it.

Thank you for commenting and speaking truth, Luna, Paws, and Heather. You all are right, of course, and I'm so happy that my aunt got to live as long as she did. She lived the way she wanted, and that's that. I am now extra sure to cherish my family even more, and to make lasting friends. :)

I really think I should watch Downton Abbey. I'm going to do a bit more research on the show, and then I will probably buy the first series. I don't have Netflix or any other rental service, so I usually have to buy the shows I want. Downton Abbey looks so beautifully made! I'm a sucker for lovely cinematography, so I look forward to that, at least.

I'm going to follow UnrulySun's example (always a good idea!) and do a Song of the Day Feature! I'm not sure if anyone will like the songs I recommend, but hey, I'll give it a shot anyway! I have three great loves in music - symphonic metal, classical, and soundtracks. Naturally there are a few other genres and individual artists sprinkled in, but I will generally love anything in those three.

Today's song will be a soundtrack/trailer song, and it is one my all time favorites. The artist is called Two Steps From Hell, and they are responsible for a lot of the great songs that you hear accompanying trailers. I have a soft spot for grand, sweeping and heroic songs that make you want to go defend a fair maiden's honor, or attack a fire-breathing dragon with nothing but a can opener. This song is no exception, and it is one of the finest examples of modern heroic music. I only wish it was longer. Wah.

Majkia - Sigh. Such good looking men... and so talented! Hopefully I'll be able to find someone like that.

Paws - I love how the show looks! More on that in a bit.

Rhonda - Thank you for coming to my thread! And I love that quote. J.K. Rowling is very wise. :)

Paws - I hope you're enjoying it! What was the last episode you watched? I would love to know how your Doctor Who journey is coming along.

Kathy - I'm glad you enjoyed it! I often eat and breathe soundtrack music, just because it is helpful for when I'm writing. It creates an atmosphere without taking my mind off the work, just like I was creating a movie.

Good news, everyone! I watched my first episode of Downton Abbey! Yay! I watched the first episode of Season 3, just because I saw it on PBS's website, and I thought "what the hell." At first I was highly confused and a bit bored because I had no idea who anyone was, but I figured that was only to be expected, since I wasn't starting with the first series.

Despite that I quickly picked up who all the characters were, and during the commercial breaks I looked up the characters just to give me some background information. I don't know everything, so I can't wait to pick up the first and second seasons when I get the chance. I think I really like it! All the characters are for the most part memorable and enjoyable to watch, and I found myself getting sucked into the social interactions (despite the fact that I usually don't go for that sort of thing). Downton Abbey is a gorgeous place, and I loved seeing how showy and splendid it all was. I cannot wait to see the next episode!

81PawsforThought

80. Oh, great! You're in for a treat. Julian Fellowes is a bit frustrating in that he doesn't seem to care about time passing and other worldly things (the entirety of WW1 was over and done with during season two but no one in the cast aged at all!). But it's still a great show and the cast is faboo. Anna! Evil Thomas! Sybil and Branson! Matthew!, Oh, Matthew!

I've watched episode 21 of the first season (there were a few episodes missing, though) and after that I decided there was only so much stilted acting and slow developments a girl can take at a time so decided to take a break and jump forward in time to the "new" series so have watched the first two episodes with Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper.
I love it!
I'll go back and watch the rest of the old series but I'll spread it out over time so as not to get oversaturated.

Sorry to read about your great aunt and the rather graphically dramatic way of her passing. I am sure she wouldn't have felt the pain of banging her face with the stroke.

Paws - You started with the Classic series? Don't do that, come back to that later, especially with the First Doctor. His episodes can be quite slow and dull. My favorite Classic Doctors are Two and Four, and once you're done with New Who I can recommend some episodes. I'm glad you like Christopher and Billie! Rose and Nine were... "fantastic."

Paul and Stasia - Thank you. I really, REALLY hope she wasn't in pain, and that she was ready to go. I think she was. After her death, she had everything in order. Her finances were sound (as sound as a poor, little old lady could have), a burial plot was already picked out, and she was prepared for the worst.

Nice collaborators for the Doctor, Paul! LOTR and Doctor Who would be a particularly splendid crossover. Did you know that the Doctor referred to himself as a "space Gandalf" in the new series? That's when he was trying to convince his companion that he really wasn't just "a bloke," but an ancient time being of great age.

***spoilers for Doctor Who***

Ah, well, that was Nine's style! He had just come back from the Time War and killing all of the Time Lords, so his mood is dark and dangerous, so his clothing reflects that. I think you'll find (especially with the new Doctors) that their clothing attire is slightly indicative of their mood. After Amy and Rory left the Eleventh Doctor (I can't wait for you to see The Angels Take Manhattan... you will cry) he actually got rid of his bow tie and wore greyer clothes in mourning.

I haven't read the Artemis Fowl books yet (I'm planning to though, just haven't had time) so I can't say anything about Eoin Colfer's writing, but I think that fact that he was trusted with writing an additional book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-series is a pretty big deal and makes me think he'd be a good fit for something like this.

David Tennant was on a chat show the other day and the host was quizzing him about it. David said that a woman from the BBC had turned up while he was waiting in the green room backstage and told him that he wasn't allowed to say or mention anything about it. David turned round and said 'I haven't been told anything, I haven't been asked to be in it or anything, how could I say anything??!?!'.

Faith - Haha! I know! I was so excited when I heard the news that I just went screeching about it to my brother and mom. They weren't as excited, though. I'm the lone crazed Whovian in my family, so I'll just join you and your dad in the excitement!

Luna - I saw that interview! I am highly inspired by it, because then that means that there is hope for a multi-Doctor Special. If David is being warned by the BBC, then they're either a) seriously considering him to be a part of the celebrations or b) he's already in on the secret, and he's deflecting questions as best as he can. I'm hoping that all the living Doctors get in on the Doctor Who anniversary, to be honest. I don't care if they can't fit into their costumes! Just get them in somehow! Especially since Tom Baker still sounds the same as he did during his turn as the Doctor.

Stasia - Happy Monday to you! :) I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Songs of the Day

I Was Born for This, by Austin Wintory and The Call, by Auston Wintory

If you've had a hard day at work or school today, listen to those songs. They will calm and inspire you, I promise. It's not often that I go gaga over a video game soundtrack, but Journey's is so deserving of it. Even the Grammys think so, and the soundtrack for Journey will be the first video game soundtrack to go up against the soundtracks for films like The Dark Knight Rises, The Artist, and Hugo. I kinda hope it wins, because the whole soundtrack is a gorgeous work of art, and it moves me to tears.

Hi Eris, is that the complete Maus? It's an intriguing piece of work, isn't it?

And those are great tracks. Have you played that game before, or how did you run across the soundtrack? The premise of the game sounds cool but I'm not sure what the objective is exactly. I like that you help each other without communicating. So many video games have each player shouting at another through the headphone microphone thingies, it drives me batty.

112ErisofDiscord
Jan 18, 2013, 12:45 am

Yes, I am reading The Complete Maus. It is amazing, and I am truly in awe of what the creator has accomplished. I cannot put it down!

I haven't played Journey before, unfortunately, but I ran across the game because I found someone's playthrough of it on YouTube. I'm not allowed to play computer or video games, even though I kinda like them, so I get out my urge by watching other people play them. I was really awestruck by the visuals, the atmosphere, the animation, and also the music that I heard. The objective of the game (basically) is to reach the top of the moutain in the distance and. The focus of the game is on the journey that the player takes, and the experience of going on almost a pilgrimage. It doesn't sound exciting, but it's really interesting how you wordlessly learn more about the civilization you travel through, and the adventure you take. It's like the Fellowship going to Mount Doom, only Mount Doom in this game is a lot nicer.

It's come to my attention that I watched the Doctor Who Christmas special a couple weeks ago but forgot to share my thoughts. So here I go:

- I think Matt Smith is so mopey and emo all the time that it was hard for me to believe that he was actually upset that Amy and Rory were gone.
- I like Clara. When everyone kept describing her as feisty and flirty I was worried she would be too much like Amy. But when it comes down to it Amy was always The Girl Who Waited and Clara won't wait for anyone.
- The old intro is back! It's way better than the dumb one with Amy's voiceover.
- He gave Clara the key! I don't remember if you were the one I was discussing it with, but it always bothered me that they never showed The Doctor giving Amy the key. That's my favorite part of any new companion. and he gave Clara the key! It was so sweet! SPOILER I hope he gives the next iteration of Clara the key, too. More key-giving for everyone! End Spoiler.

I think that's it for now, but I'll let you know if I think of any more points.

Sadly that is too true. Community/junior college is a good option for the financially challenged (aren't we all?), and if you get an Associates degree you can carry it into any 4-yr university as a huge head start. And meanwhile, something more specific may take shape.

In addition to the Doctor Who geekings, I also write fiction and I draw (both of which I have been doing a lot of recently - perhaps that's one reason why my reading has declined!), so if anyone's interested, I can share my drawings with ya'll.

I quite like your idea for celebrating Groundhog Day, Paws! That bunny is so much cuter than a groundhog with magical powers. ^_^

And here are the promised pictures! Please note that I am still learning, and that they aren't the greatest. I've only been working to improve at realistic drawing for a couple of years, although I've drawn all my life.

A portrait of one of my characters in a book. She's supposed to look like a girl, but everyone I've shown the drawing to think she looks like a guy. Sigh. 'Tis the curse of short hair. And that red blotch is ink from my calligraphy that managed to get onto the picture. >:(

Sorry for the lousy quality. I'm still working on this tribute to Oswin Oswald. It's supposed to be based off this one:

... but capturing a likeness is so difficult!

And last, a still life of a rose from my backyard:

I apologize for the not-so-great quality of the pictures, but that's just a small piece of what I've been up to! I hope you all had a wonderful Saturday, and I can't wait to talk to you guys tomorrow.

Book Haul:

The Marlowe Papers, by Ros Barber - a book that is based around my favoritest (and only) conspiracy theory: that Christopher Marlowe was the author of the Shakespeare plays. Oh, yeah, I'm one of those nuts. Run and scream.

Doctor Who: The Wheel of Ice, by Stephen Baxter - a book about the exploits of the Second Doctor + Jaime and Zoe on a base for one of Saturn's moons. I'm enjoying it very much so far, as I am a big Two nut.

The Colossus and Other Poems, by Sylvia Plath - I like Plath (for some reason that I can't quite tell why), so I was happy to find this book at the library.

Write Like the Masters, by William Cane - an interesting book about emulating the stoyles of known writers. I'm particularly interested in the sections about Dostoevsky, Kafka, Dickens, and Flannery O'Connor

The Andromeda Strain, by Michael Crichton - this book isn't technically part of my book haul (I smuggled it out of my dad's study), but it's a book that I wanted to make a note of here, as it's a highly fascinating subject.

Micky - The improv sounds so magical! I wish they did things like that where I live. Oh, well, in time... Doctor Who is starting to become more and more popular all over America, so it's only a matter of time before it's as well known as it is in the UK.

7. Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen

I've been so wrong. I tried reading this book when I was freshman in high-school, and I only made it three pages without understanding any of what I had read. My first impression of the book was that it was dull, disinteresting, and the language with which Austen wrote was incomphrensible to my brain. For a few years I was smug in my conviction, content with "never getting Jane Austen" and satisfied that I had at least tried to read Pride and Prejudice.

Little did I know that I was afflicted with the same problem as our spunky heroine, Elizabeth. My first impression of the book when I was a freshman might have been justified, given that I was not yet mature enough to fully appreciate Austen's wit and the world that she wrote about. However, I let that first impression build a prejudice of sorts about Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen.

For that, I am sorry, Jane Austen. I apologize for ever doubting your writing abilities. I now gift thee with the status of being one of my favorite writers. There. I'm sure you're very pleased. Be happy, Jane Austen, for it is all YOUR fault that I lost many hours of schoolwork and sleep time because I couldn't put down your bloody book.

Well, I'm happy that I'll finally be able to watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and actually understand what they're all talking about. And now I'm going to probably be reading all the Jane Austen books I can get my grimy paws on.

What have I gotten myself into?

Hurrah! An Austen convert! I didn't "get" P&P the first time I tried it either but after watching the BBC mini-series I realized what I hadn't picked up on when I read it - the humour and sarcasm. So I tried to read it again and absolutely loved it.

I'm pretty fond of Northanger Abbey; it doesn't always get a lot of cred but I think it's delightful.

Feb 27, 2013, 3:00 pm

I love all of Jane Austen's stuff, even the oft-maligned Mansfield Park so trying to suggest which one to pick up next is difficult. I often will read in publication order, which puts Sense and Sensibility ahead of Pride and Prejudice. However, then Northanger Abbey seems a bit odd as it was published posthumously but was actually written before S&S.

Nora - My mom kindly bought me Emma and Persuasion from the bookstore, so I'll probably read one of those two next. I'm leaning towards Persuasion because it is shorter, although Emma looks interesting.

Paws - I look forward to reading Northanger Abbey sometime! I've heard it's very good, as well, so I'll have to look to it next. I also really want to watch the BBC mini-series. I watched the 2005 film a while ago, and I enjoyed it. I can't wait to watch it again and see if it holds up to the spirit of the book.

Foggi - Then I shall definitely have to be on the look-out for Northanger Abbey. My want-to-read list is growing as fast as bunnies have babies. Shiny!

Micky - I shall have to get Sense and Sensibility sometime soon from the bookstore. And if I can't wait I'll even check it out from the library. I checked out Pride and Prejudice from the library, and finished it very promptly, despite the fact that I usually take a while with classics. I didn't anticipate the juicness of Elizabeth/Darcy. :D

Laura - I am happy to be an Austen fan! (Never thought I'd be saying that.) *tackle hug*

Roni - Thank you! I always did know that Jane was probably a good writer, and I respected her for being a writer during a time when it was uncommon for women to do so. However, I never understood her charm for myself. Now I am so happy to! I shall probably be owning all of her books by the time I am done with this year.

Cynara - I am so happy to be in the Austenian Bretheren! I cannot wait to tell you all what I think of Persuasion.

Nora - Maybe I should've started Emma instead of Persuasion. Nah, I'll keep with Persuasion, but I think I will not be dissapointed by Emma.

Catherine - The Doctor hasn't visited Jane, but he really should! I can just imagine him landing the TARDIS right into a prim get-together between her and some of her friends. I think Jane would be absolutely delighted! ^_^

Richard - I saw your review over at Goodreads of Pride and Prejudice. Very beautifully written, my love.

Happy Ides of March Day, everyone! To commemorate, I shall buy a Caesar salad and stab it 23 times with my fork.

Today is Ides of March? Huh. LT is very good for me learning something new every day. I shall, hmm, see if I can find an episode of Asterix.

Leah and Nora - It's so exciting! Gah! I keep wondering what the Doctor's afraid of. Is he at the Fields of Trenzalore? Has the Question been asked? More importantly HAS IT BEEN ANSWERED?! I'm in so much suspense.

Richard - Gosh, I wish I could get those! It'd drive my dad up a wall! My dad doesn't know quite what to think with my Whovian obsession.

Kathy - I did catch the Doctor Who part when it came out, but I hadn't seen the full clip. Thanks for the link! "We're not like Downton Abbey, we're gritty!" XD

Can anyone explain why The Doctor is wearing what appears to be a woman's suit?

251PawsforThought
Mar 26, 2013, 12:38 pm

250. Woman's suit? To me, it appears to be a 70's suit.

252leahbird
Mar 26, 2013, 2:21 pm

Maybe. The tailoring of the pants just seemed very feminine.

253UnrulySun
Mar 26, 2013, 2:39 pm

Looks feminine to me too, the cinched waist, straight pants, high shoulders and skinny arms, straight hem... But I don't care, that photo shoot is sexy. Have you seen the rest of the pictures?

Mar 26, 2013, 2:40 pm

Your thread is quite dangerous for me as though I enjoy Dr Who I haven't caught up on the latest series just yet.
On the advice of humouress I visited the Forbidden Planet store on a recent trip to London and got my son a second Doctor t-shirt. I had to go with what was in stock but figured that bowties never go out of fashion!

Glad to see another Jane Austen convert. I love them all, my favourite is probably Northanger Abbey as well.

Mar 26, 2013, 2:42 pm

253. I think you just nailed the definition of most 70's clothes. ;)

The buttons appear to be in the manner they are on a man's suit.

Speaking of the Who photo, is Jenna-Lousie Coleman dressed up as Carole Ann Ford? That outfit is VERY "Susan".

Mar 26, 2013, 4:11 pm

Haha, paws... That's the 60s for us. As usual you guys are a decade behind... *ducks*

260PawsforThought
Mar 26, 2013, 4:38 pm

259. Well, my part of the world was definitely a decade behind fashion-wise up until the mid-nineties.

But seriously, NO ONE wore trousers like that in the sixties. NO ONE. Except maybe time-travelling doctors who had been to the future known as the 70's and learnt a thing or two.

261UnrulySun
Mar 26, 2013, 7:32 pm

The pants part actually looks more 20s/30s the more I look at them. Buster Keaton or Cary Grant could have worn that suit.

262PawsforThought
Mar 26, 2013, 7:42 pm

261. Yeah, you're right about the trousers looking that way. I think my granddad wore something similar in his youth.

I just saw that! I love the Doctor Puppet so much, and I adore Clara Puppet! *sniff* Souffle Girl! I can't wait for tomorrow!

Leah - That picture is the cutest! I think that Matt looks smashing. The pants are like a sailor's and the suit makes him look devilishly handsome. Jenna is so tiny compared to him, though! No wonder that in some scenes for Who she has to stand on a telephone book.

Ugh, I must make a thousand apologies for being so quiet on my thread. I keep up with so much on the internet that it can get exhausting, and I take breaks. I've been writing a lot recently, and I am so excited about what I've been creating. I even managed to get myself featured on the homepage of figment.com (a young writer's website that I'm a part of) by winning a contest they held. I created a story idea for this one challenge (and that story idea is what I'm basing my new novel off of), and I managed to be one of the winners! :) http://figment.com/books/519384-Ad-Astra

I will probably get around to seeing all the threads tomorrow, while I'm dying in anticipation for Doctor Who to come. Thanks for coming to my thread, even though I've been MIA.

Leah - Happy Doctor Day, to you, too! Whovian hugs for all! I'm so excited I could burst! Especially when I share some spoilers for the 50th Anniversary at the end of this message. So, be warned!

Blue Salamanders - You're right. I just feel obligated to my readers, and I can't help it! I must apologize, I must!

Majkia - Even though I haven't watched Game of Thrones (and am not really inclined to), I wish you all the luck and happiness with that show!

Okay, spoilers for the 50th now. I've been dying to tell them. Especially since they're OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED BY BBC SPOILERS.

Maybe. We'll see. He could be lying. I remember when Christopher Nolan flat out said that Talia al Ghul wasn't going to be in The Dark Knight Rises, and it turns out she was, and it was one of the big plot twists. So only time will tell! I hope John will be in the 50th. The flirt-off between him, River, and Clara would be spectactular!
