This topic is for discussing bugs in the new design. Bugs are things that don't work or look right. Not being salmon is not a bug ;)

For general comments on the new design see:

The new design and the new homes page went live at the same point. For comments on the new home page see here. For bugs on the new home page see here.

The goal is to get a blog post out, with a video. But that's not happening tonight. So have at it.

In brief:

* There are many new home pages, not one.
* The new home pages have many new modules, and some returnees (tag watch)
* The home page modules can be moved around.
* The main home page is called the "Dashboard." You can move modules off and on your dashboard, so you have a main home page that suits what you care about.

There's something odd happening with reading dates.

Sorting the catalogue by date started sort of gets it right, with an unread book top of the list, plus 3 of the next four should have dates started, but don't show them. Then there are other books without reading dates shown which are not sorted as if they were (if you see what I mean).

I've checked a couple of books which are not showing their reading dates; the dates are in the book details (both for a correctly sorted book and one which is awol, sorting-wise).

ETA - talk is up the spout - I just overwrote the previous message, and an earlier on of mine was (presumably) overwritten).

Jul 2, 2013, 3:57pm Top

Thanks. Let's keep this to the new design. That is almost certainly not a new-design issue. Post a bug report in another topic?

Jul 2, 2013, 4:06pm Top

I reverted to the old method to compare something, and now I can't seem to go back. Also, the old homepage is "unavailable" so I can't even compare.

Is this a bug? :)

Jul 2, 2013, 4:10pm Top

Yeah, the old home page IS unavailable.

You can change the design, but not go back to the old home page.

Many, many of the modules are new, of course.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:11pm Top

I have Your Tags sorted by count and it's currently listing them horizontally, I think it would read much better if it was vertically like Your Collections.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:13pm Top

>7 JGKC:: I second this suggestion.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:16pm Top

7: I third it. My brain doesn't order things horizontally :/

And the time on Talk posts is still wrong (showing US time and not my local time).

Jul 2, 2013, 4:23pm Top

And the time on Talk posts is still wrong (showing US time and not my local time).

Let's start a new bug for that.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:27pm Top

My tabs are disappearing after I log on to add information. Then the new information is not being entered.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:28pm Top

llon the new homepage everything is overlapping in the right margin such as this topic was in with early.reviewers like single column viewing.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:28pm Top

>11 MomMom46:

Can you be more specific? Where are you adding information? Cut and paste the URL if possible.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:30pm Top

I just noticed that the local events on my home page are not the same as the ones on my LibraryThing Local page, though the filters appear to be the same. (The Home Page shows four events on 7/2, while the LT Local page shows only two on that date.)

Edited: Jul 2, 2013, 4:39pm Top

Is it just me or has the work average rating disappeared from the your books view?

Jul 2, 2013, 4:41pm Top

12: Devlindusty, what browser are you using?

Edited: Jul 2, 2013, 4:52pm Top

There's some inconsistency in the color of links. Unfollowed is still blue as before. Followed is still purple as before. But now "hover" is an orangey or wine color.

ETA: I'm talking about links in the main content section of the page, not in the top nav.

Jul 2, 2013, 4:57pm Top

17, that is correct. Actually none of the colors are the same as before. All of them have changed at least a bit. The hover is the red accent color in the header.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:23pm Top

The favicon is still fish coloured. (If you have people complaining about the colour of a favicon you know you did a good job)

Jul 2, 2013, 5:27pm Top

18 - Might be better for the hover and followed to be the same, or more similar.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:27pm Top

If I switch 'recently added' from 'titles' to 'covers' or 'shelve' it takes a few seconds to load. No problem. But there is no GUI feedback something is loading.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:32pm Top

'Your collections' has four columns with my collections. I have 8 collections, yet it list them like this:

collection 1 | collection 4 | collection 7 | collection 8
collection 2 | collection 5 |
collection 3 | collection 6 |

Two collections in each column would be more logical imo.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:53pm Top

Remember, this is bugs related to the new design (top nav, colors, layout, etc.)
Bugs related to home page modules should go in that Talk thread.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:53pm Top

24: Good catch. I'll be fixing that page. {cD marks it in his etherpad}

Jul 2, 2013, 5:56pm Top

20: I think we'll revisit the link colors again and tweak them a bit more. The red color probably needs to be a little darker for links because it looks different from the red in the header, even though they are exactly the same color. It's the human brain. I blame the human brain.

Jul 2, 2013, 5:56pm Top

The titles (on hover) of the hidden module-management-buttons are interesting:

'Reorder' says 'Add to dashboard'
'Remove' says 'remove' (should be something like 'Remove from dashboard')
'Settings' says 'settings', which is not great but it should have at least a capital :)
(want a screenshot?)

Jul 2, 2013, 6:04pm Top

Stop it. Really. Design bugs only. :)

Here's the deal:
The "New Home Page" (layout and all) is nearly all Tim's work.
The "New Design" for the site is nearly all my work.

That means that we'll likely be concentrating on the respective bug threads and might accidentally lose reports that are mentioned in the other thread.

One possible "bug" people may be running into is that IE's "Compatibility Mode" is the devil.

It turns this:

I'm having the same problem. Missing 1/4 of the most recent 100 books when I sort by "stopped" date.

Jul 2, 2013, 9:04pm Top

From the home or any other page in the new design, the search box at the top left does not work.

Jul 2, 2013, 9:11pm Top

On my Blackberry's native browser:

The set of admin-type links following the search box ('{Username}', 'Share', 'Sign out', 'Help') displays as very light grey on a white background. The contrast is too low for readability and when the phone is held at certain angles the links are invisible.

When I go to my profile from the '{Username}' link, nothing after 'Members with your books' loads (there's just an empty element box).

The 'revert' link has no effect.

Jul 2, 2013, 9:39pm Top

Sorry if this isn't the right place to put this - I'm not sure if it's related to the new design (which I really like, btw), but it started happening when the new design was implemented. My catalog isn't loading most of the time (http://www.librarything.com/catalog/bell7); instead I get this error:

"Some sort of error just happened. The error was logged and Tim has been alerted. If problems persist, email timspaldingAT SIGNlibrarything.com

In most cases, the problem can be fixed by using this link.

The reported error was:

Problem with the concurrent query manager in the LibraryThing Bureau of Garbage Collections.
We have an entire room of trained monkeys working to solve the problem.. and when I click "this link" to fix it, a second line of navigation comes up. "

Then, when I click on "this link" I get a second line of the navigation:

And when I try to resort, I'm getting the error again. :(

My date "finished" column is back to being called "stopped" and any dates I entered recently (in the last month) are not showing up. Also, the column that shows the community ratings "Work: Average Rating" no longer shows up. Both worked yesterday before new design.

Jul 2, 2013, 10:42pm Top

Jul 2, 2013, 10:43pm Top

54>> The problem of missing dates is being discussed on this Bug Collectors thread. C'mon over and join us!

I suspect there was some kind of change in a field name during this conversion and that's what's causing some of the data to be missing. I've lost all of May and June "stopped" dates but it looks like the data may still be showing up correctly as "finished" dates on the book edit page.

For some reason the number of topics in the Talk module keeps reverting to the default 10, even though I've altered it several times. Apparently I'm supposed to set the preferred number for every tab -- all topics, your groups, your posts. As soon as I switch to a tab I haven't set a preferred number of topics for and back to one I have, the module reverts to 10 topics shown.

Possibly to do with the new floaty-header-bar-thingy™, when clicking into a talk subject from an "unread" link on the main Talk page, the result is one line too high. This hides the name of the poster of the last read message.

Edit: Actually I think it is two lines, not one.

Jul 3, 2013, 1:47am Top

On the "About You" page, the "Your Recent Reviews" module does not show the most recent reviews. For me (using Win7, with both Chrome and Firefox) it does show the most recent review I wrote, but then skips to an out-of-order selection of older reviews. Is that a feature? The selection does not change after refreshing the page.

This happens on the "Reviews" page accessible from the left-hand menu as well.

The order of reviews is unaffected on the Home > Reviews tab, which shows a correct reverse chronological order.

For all I know, this bug could've been around for awhile and I wasn’t there to see it, but... on Your Books / Tags, when I change the text size to small or medium, it switches automatically to All Collections (and the text size is as requested). When I switch manually to another collection, the text size reverts to large.

63> I came here to post about the very same thing, that the non-scrolling header is hiding the top section of the last-read post in talk threads. It's kind of negating the whole purpose of taking you to that one at the top rather than the newest one first.

(More reason for me to dislike the non-scrolling header. Looking at it fresh in the morning and I don't like it anymore than I did last night, even if it is pretty.)

Not sure if this is a bug that happened when the new design went in or not, but there's something a bit off with group pictures.

Some things I noticed:

Has an image uploaded today as the group image (click on the image to see the details). Yet it says over on the right:
Group pictures

No group pictures

This group allows all members to add pictures.

Add a group picture...
I would think it should at least show that image. That COULD be a caching thing since it's very recent. But I was almost positive there was SOME image for this group before.

Second thing:

Over on the right it says:
Group pictures

No group pictures

This group allows all members to add pictures.
Again, claims there is no group picture even though there is one. But also claims all members can add pictures but there is no "Add a group picture..." link. And there shouldn't be for this group. My guess is that its not respecting the flag for whether they can upload and is always just putting the same "This group allows all members to add pictures" text on all pages. In fact, I have yet to find ANY group that doesn't say all members can upload pictures.

On the right it says:
Group pictures (0)

This group allows all members to add pictures.

Add a group picture...
Note that it says "(0)", which the other groups didn't. And this group legitimately has no group image, but it doesn't have the text "No group pictures".

I know you changed some of the sidebars and there has been some other interaction with Talk (like the missing message indicator), hence my post here. Just say the word if it's definitely not related and I'll repost to Bug Collectors.

Jul 3, 2013, 2:50pm Top

I see you are tweaking the Talk message header colors. Just in case you haven't noticed, they still get the old colors when you click "Mark as read to here" and when you post a new message (all messages previous to the current one get re-salmonified).

All that I get is a box at the top saying Click and drag the modules to reorder with save / cancel buttons under it when I hit reorder icon on each module... this is a pain!

ETA: using Mac OSX with FF 22

This happens with the reorder link at the bottom and with each re-order icon on each module.

I'm not sure whether this is related to the redesign, but this morning the last day or two of additions I had made were deleted. They're no longer included in the numbers on my profile, and don't show up in "Your books", though they had been there before.

As an experiment, I added two more after this happened, and they do show up, but the gap has not been filled in.

The most recent of the missing books still appear in the list on the right side of the "add books" page. When I click on those, it shows that I added them, and whether I tagged them; but there is also an "add this book" link.

If I search LibraryThing for one of the books, it will show that I recently added it. And a book for which I was the only member is findable this way. But I search my own books for them, they don't show up.

I don't know whether I should just recatalog these, or wait to see if they come back. Also, although it looks as if the missing books are just those added within a certain time span (July 2 - 4), I don't know how to confirm this; maybe others got deleted also.

Anyone else experiencing this?

My apologies if this has been mentioned already. This is re. the "On This Day" widget. I have it set to 5 events showing. When I click the link for "See all events for this date", the 5 events disappear and I'm still on the Dashboard/Home page. Is it meant to do that? I assumed it would take me to a page with more "On This Day" entries.

One thing that's troubling/difficult is the sizing (or non-sizing) of the new nav bar, which makes it difficult to do some things. I apologize in advance for lengthiness and/or not getting the technical terms right.

I often use LT in Chrome on my Nexus 7, usually in portrait view.

In the old design:

- Double-tapping on the screen enlarges the main screen area, and also the upper navigation area.

- I can grab and drag the screen -- including the navigation area -- to bring the right-hand side of the navigation fully into view ("Essa, Share, Sign Out, Help; and Search site).

- I can grab, pinch, and expand that area, making the typeface larger, enabling my fingers to tap the necessary areas more easily. (For instance, if I want to Sign Out.)

In the new design:

- Double-tapping the screen enlarges the main screen area, and also the nav bar -- but only a portion of the nav bar is then visible. (L, Home, Your Books, Add Books, Groups, Talk, Local, and a sliver of the search bar.)

- The nav bar is not itself scrollable. I can enlarge it, but can't move it horizontally to get to the parts that don't show in my screen.

- To access the right-hand side of the nav bar (Essa, Share, Sign Out, Help, and Search site), I have to go back to the bird's-eye view of the entire screen.

- Unfortunately, that means that Essa, Share, Sign Out, and Help are very small, and clicking on them is tricky, even despite that I have small hands. More often than not, I end up accidentally tapping in the Search bar. For folks with large hands or arthritis or the like, I expect it would be even worse.

If it's helpful, I'll see if I am able to obtain some screenshots with the tablet. I'll also keep fiddling with the sizing to make sure this issue isn't down to user error rather than a bug. ;)

Thanks to Tim and the development team and the helpful LT members as they work through all of these things.

Essa, I am getting the same problem on my phone. trying to respond to you in landscape is near impossible. will upload screencap and edit this post to show, once I get back to my laptop. it's almost certainly because of 'position: fixed' in the stylesheet, which I have been unsuccessful at changing to absolute or relative with stylish...

I also noticed that the scaling of the text sizes on the homepage is really messed up when you zoom in to have bigger fields to click on. I'll post this in the homepage bug thread, too.

I'm using an HTC One, which has a fairly large screen for a phone, though not as large as the Nexus 7 types, or a tablet. I can't imagine how it is on an iPhone 5, which seems a good deal narrower than my HTC One.

However when I click on any of them they all go to the same list - "Best Science Fiction Novels".

It would be great if this could be fixed.

For the English site, it's there if you're logged out, but not when logged in (and it's also full of blanks now, plus there are some new z-index issues with #mast_rule (also z-index issues with .subnav on the non-.com sites)). Except for the blanks and z-index issues, I think this this feature has been absent for logged-in English-site users for quite a while (certainly before the redesign), though I've never understood why.

In Talk, when clicking on a post number, the post header with the number, user and time disappears beneath the chocolate bar.

on .nl site, because the translations of the headers are longer than the originals, they overlap the search box.

The shiny "No Cover Image" images are showing up in the newly-working "Recently tagged X" section of tag pages (I quite like that section, BTW!), and they seem to persist on the tag pages even if the work pages get their cover recalculated (which makes that shiny image disappear, thankfully).

Tim/cD: I'm creating a report for a bug that might be related to the new design or might not be. Reported it earlier in the thread but think it got lost.

Jul 8, 2013, 3:45pm Top

I've been working on fixing all pages that have CSS errors (they look like there is no styling on the page at all...a few of you have mentioned a couple). Based on server logs it looks like I have found most/all of them, although there might be some lurking in deep dark places that nobody has visited recently. We have a lot of those places on LT. :)

I'm also working on fixing the search box image issue.

After that I'll turn my attention to fixing a couple of major problems with styling on mobile devices.

After that the plan is to move through the rest of my list (it's not as big as I thought it would be after such a massive site change).

Here's another one with little styling: http://www.librarything.com/z_users.php Not sure what links to it. Found it while Googling for something.

207: Thanks, and fixed. I'll be checking the server logs in the coming days so I'll catch pages as they are hit.

Jul 8, 2013, 4:44pm Top

I've fixed the search box magnifying glass. You can now click on it to start the search.

Edited: Jul 8, 2013, 4:56pm Top

>209 conceptDawg: that seems to have fixed the big problem for search on the language sites as well. At least the box is now on top of the links in the chocolatebar.
More and Zeitgeist are now the ones that are obscured by the search box, though they can be clicked with some careful mousepointing...

Jul 8, 2013, 9:19pm Top

Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere:

On venue pages (see example), the "Local" tab in the chocolate bar is not highlighted. Add/Edit Venue also has this problem. Add Event is missing the highlighting of the "Local" tab as well as the 2nd bar of subnavigation.

I realize this might have be carryover behavior from the old design, though I think the new design makes it more noticeable.

Edited: Jul 8, 2013, 9:54pm Top

The navigation boxes that appear on the right-hand side of wiki pages seem too squished. I don't recall them looking that way before. Some examples (the images link to the wiki pages):

Jul 8, 2013, 9:53pm Top

Just noticed that those links are also the default blue.

Jul 8, 2013, 10:06pm Top

When adding a new venue, clicking on the 'Other Places' radio button no longer hides the Library-related fields. I.E. the screen looks the same as when you click on the 'Library' radio button. I think this change coincides with the new design, but I can't be 100%.

These pages have green subheadings instead of the new brown, black or red colors:

These pages have other salmony/old colors:

I think this has also been mentioned, but just in case: the generated images in stats/memes, in this pie chart, and in the "Indexing catalog" bar are still a green color that went much better with the old design than the new one. Also, the checkmark icon that indicates you have own a book. But perhaps these are not considered bugs.

Jul 8, 2013, 11:01pm Top

215, 216 Colors wrong
Most of these aren't bugs so much as just things put on the back burner until after the launch. I just had so much to do getting to this point that I had to make decisions on things that could wait.

The Services green headings is on purpose (to set the API stuff apart from the standard site pages a bit) though they could probably be changed to the red without much bother.

The other stuff that you've mentioned is all good stuff and they are now on my list.

Another missing CSS - http://www.librarything.com/grepsearch_reindex_books.php . Also, I let it run for nearly 20 minutes with no change (while I puttered around on other, non-LT, tabs). I've got a biggish library, but that seems excessive.

Probably unrelated to the new design though. Want me to bug it properly?

216> Also, the checkmark icon that indicates you have own a book.

That one's not a bug since the color indicates which collection the book is in...unless you're going to be revisiting all the different colors for checkmarks which would be confusing.

Jul 9, 2013, 11:52am Top

Is the visited-link color still on the list? Because I can barely tell the difference between a link I've visited and one I haven't on the Talk page and its starting to get annoying.

Jul 9, 2013, 11:56am Top

>226 jjwilson61:

Mine definitely shows a difference, purple (visited) versus blue. Again an issue with browser / monitor rendering colours differently?

Jul 9, 2013, 12:01pm Top

Well, it's a lot more subtle than it was before, and I'm having trouble on all my monitors, at home and at work.

Jul 10, 2013, 8:29am Top

Blue and Purple for links is the way it's been since before Netscape. It's a problem with big bits of various links. There's not that much contrast between them, I think by design even, so they are in the same broad colour spectrum, so you can use both without too much trouble.

It was one of the features of LT that seemed to indicate to me it was designed by someone who had been online at least as long as I. Could've been wrong of course :)

Jul 10, 2013, 10:12am Top

I'm not sure if this is related to the new design, or if something else is involved, but since the changeover it takes about 20-30 seconds for my catalog to load on the "your books" tab -- even if there is nothing new to index. I did try reducing the number of records displaying by default, with no apparent effect. I don't remember it taking so long before the design changeover, so I thought I'd mention it.

Jul 10, 2013, 10:32am Top

This could be an old problem but I don't remember noticing it before the website revamp.

Clicking on 'Next' at the bottom of a books first set of reviews loads the next set but jumps the screen down into the middle of the Common Knowledge section.

I've had this happen several time on different books.

Jul 10, 2013, 10:36am Top

>231 Vivl:
this happened in the old design as well. After you've clicked next, you're still in the same position on the page (as judged from the top/bottom, I guess), but the new batch of reviews are briefer, meaning the modules below the reviews now aren't as far down the page as they were for the initial set of reviews. It'd be useful if the "next" link there relocated you to the top of the review module.

Jul 10, 2013, 11:05am Top

>232 Petroglyph:

Ah yes, that makes sense. As you say, being taken to the top of the module would be ideal.

Jul 10, 2013, 11:31am Top

231-233> That's a problem elsewhere on the site as well. For example on the page for a group if you click next at the bottom to get the next set of topics, it leaves you at the bottom of the page where you really want to be at the top of the page.

Jul 10, 2013, 11:37am Top

The search function also loads the next page at the bottom.

Jul 10, 2013, 11:44am Top

Yes. Though hardly a bug in the new design - since it seems to have worked that way forever - it would be nice if that could be remedied.

>135 keristars: - thanks Keristars. I didn't have it, but I do now. all fixed :)

Jul 10, 2013, 3:23pm Top

235, 236 > yes, even though it's a tad off topic, it would be very nice to be brought to the top of the next search page rather than the bottom. It's especially unsettling if there are only a few items on the continuation page, because until you scroll up, all you see is white space.

Jul 10, 2013, 3:44pm Top

235, 236, 236 - Except that on the group page, if you are trying to go back through several pages of topics as I often am when catching up on the busy 75 Group, it is helpful that the next option takes you to the bottom of the page not the top, as you'd have to scroll down to click 'next' again. What would be really helpful is having prev/next at both top and bottom of such lists of topics so you can easily navigate from either end of the list.

Jul 10, 2013, 3:47pm Top

I'm a bit surprised that the topic list in a Group page doesn't have a next button at the top like the regular topics list. Of course, it's even more surprising to me that the Talk module doesn't have one.

Further to ccookie's report of an error on the Early Reviewer's page (post #268), these reports were posted on the home page comments thread but would probably be of more use here:

>159 krazy4katz: by irishsurprise: I was browsing the Early Reviewers list just now on my iPad, and the books you've won/books requested bar was frozen in place. So when I scrolled down, it blocked text on the rest of the page.

And by me:

>211 omargosh:: Re Early Reviewers page, I have had the same problem with the books won/requested bar frozen in place and blocking text, and I'm on a laptop running Chrome on Windows 7.

>222 conceptDawg:: Update on the Early Reviewers Books Requested/Won bar floating down and blocking text, this is also happening today on the Connections page. The Connection News/Author Connections bar is floating.

As I said earlier, I'm using the latest version of Chrome (28.0.1500.72 m) on Windows 7.

I'm sure it wasn't happening yesterday.

Edited to add: A couple of other reports have been showing up on the Home Page threads and posters are being instructed to take it to the new design threads. Today I'm viewing LT on a different computer (Mac running FF) and am not experiencing the problem. Seeing the page work properly, I think the problem isn't so much that the Books Requested/Won bar and the Connection News/Author Connection bars are "floating" but that they are the only ones that are scrolling with the page. It seems as thought the other bars ought to be scrolling as well. As a result we are seeing this strange single line scrolling, with the page text showing above and below the bar but blocked under it.

I'll check on my laptop later and try and post a screenshot if the problem is still hanging around. Literally.

Edited to add 2: Have just checked and the problem is still there. Too late in the night for me to cope with screenshots but will try to get around to it some time tomorrow.

It's a terrible, terrible browser to program for, and the whole web development community came together in joy when it sunk low enough that it could be dropped. ? I know it was there before the redesign, and I know you'll have to put something else in for search's leftnav, but it's really obnoxious when non-linking things appear to be links. It's one of the contributors to why I usually never bother looking at the left nav—it's already hard enough to figure out the structure of the elements in the leftnav (though I realize complex navbars aren't easy to design)—and therefore contributed to my blindness to the sub-home pages.

Further to my summary in post #277 re floating bar on a couple of pages, here's a screenshot:

This problem might only occur on small screens. While the rest of the header scrolls up, this new row acts like the old chocolate bar did and stays in place as we scroll down. The space above it is exactly equivalent to the chocolate bar and one row of links above it that have disappeared with scrolling down.

• I've fixed the floating subnav problem on mobile devices (and some other devices).
• Also fixed (though not mentioned here, but it's always annoyed me) is the stupid autocapitalization of the member name in the main LT site sign in box when used on a mobile device.

• The bug tracking box on the right side of bug report Talk pages is no longer green. That was certainly a major fix. I deserve a cookie.

>303 conceptDawg: THANKS! Also thank you for fixing the font in Chrome on the chocolate bar. Much more palatable now!

Hallo zusammen,
