Two things come to mind on first inspection.

First, for recently added and the recommendations modules, can we change how many we see by anything other than shelves? I never did like the shelf display, and using the titles view defaults to 10 and can't be changed.

Second, did something screw up the events module's sense of geography? I'm getting stuff from Pennsylvania, and a few things from the lower Catskills area. Perhaps it's not that far in the big scheme of things, but it's far enough. There's plenty of bookstores and libraries that are much closer.

Bugs:

Several sections on the reorder page are actually live links.

To reproduce, go to Community and then Reorder. Click on the Talk section (either just click, or try to click-drag). You'll get taken to Talk. Ditto with some (but not all) of the sections there.

Also found in:

Dashboard -> On this Day

About You
-> Recent member-uploaded Covers for Your Books (great section, btw!)
-> Your Quick Links

Connection News -> Connection News module.

Related bug, go to Reorder the Reviews section. The Reviews for Your Books module is still ajaxing in and is a link.

When I try to move the "Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books" module around, the covers get chopped off to show only the tops of the first row and nothing on lower rows (should I set it for more than one). I'm using Google Chrome (Version 28.0.1500.63 m) on Windows XP.

I was playing with what I wanted to show and reordering and now I am getting "No module yet." for three modules. I'm sure that two of the missing ones are Early Reviewers and Member Giveaways but I can't remember exactly what else I was trying to put on the dashboard.

I moved the "Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books" to my dashboard. I tried 3 rows then 2 then 1 and in any case the "reorder modules restore to defaults" links were at the end of the first row and not underneath the module.

When I got on the updated Home Page all of the dated I had saved as finished book has disappeared on over 3,000 items.... Is this Data gone for ever? Where did it go? I really do not want to have to look up and redate 3,000 books. In addition, when I attempted to add dates for date read, the system is not saving my entries. It is just deleting them and leaving all of those entries to be answered again.

No. The new home didn't change anything related to date-read status. Go ahead and open a separate bug report, and we'll try to figure out what you're seeing.

I don't know if this is considered a bug or not, so I'll post it here, and if it's not, I'll move it to comments. On the recently added books module on the home page, I set it to small covers on shelves. My browser window takes up about 2/3's to 3/4's left to right of my laptop screen. The dates added on anything that wasn't added in the last year (so with years on the end) have the writing overlapping.

Yikes! I like the old style better, but I'm at that age where change is usually unwelcome. I'm not switching just yet, though.

Update: this issue has been resolved. See #60 for lack of details, so to speak.

I'm using Firefox 22.0 on Windows 7. (Update: When I wrote this, prior to 5:00 LT time, I was on FF 21.0 -- and they just pushed an upgrade on me. No difference as far as this behavior is concerned.) Also, this problem now exists on the OLD Home page.

In Your Collections, there's a greater-than-one-inch area of wasted space on the right side of this section, slightly narrower than the area reserved for the screen's right side column. That is not the case with the Your Tabs area.

In all scenarios, there are five columns of collection names and their counts.
In the default listing, the counts of columns 1 and 2 overlay the collection names of columns 2 and 3.
Using the alphabetic listing, only column 1 counts overlay column 2 collection names.
Sorted by Book counts, columns 2 and 3 counts overlay column 3 and 4 collection names.

Now, I'll grant you that I have some high-character-count collection names, but I have even longer tags, and those (all 3,000+ of them) will list properly no matter how I sort them. Plus, I understand that the overlap would shift in the different views.
This seems to be caused by that wasted space area on the right side of the screen (prior to the screen's right column.)

My Problem #2 (collection names GUIDES and COPY not mine and had a nil count) was solved by the lovely MrsHouseLibrary.
They are, in fact, part of the names of collections of mine. These collection names include spaces (Advanced Reader Copies), and they'll wrap around to the next line of the name portion of the column. I have other collections (WholeHouseChildrensLibrary and Writing|Process|Reference and Bookbinding|Printing|Publishing that contain no spaces and remain intact and are at least partially responsible for the overlap condition.

I've noticed overlapping also (when using my iPad) on the Home page, under Local Events. 'Filter: featured, adult only' gets overwritten by the first event listed.
I think if the events started on the next line down it would resolve this nicely though.
Just an idea. :)

I can't keep up with all the posts in all the threads.

I've been playing with moving things to my dashboard and it's working well. However, no matter whether I reorder or add a module, it always says, "Module added to the bottom of the page. You can also reorder the modules." That's helpful --the part about reordering-- but sometimes what I did was move a module to the middle of the page! I think it should say, "Module change complete! You can also reorder the modules."

#19 by LamSon> What's your OS and browser?

If you can post a link to a screenshot, that'd be great, too.

23brightcopy
Jul 2, 2013, 5:28pm Top

Tip for everyone about posting screenshots, here's an easy way:

Close any browser tabs you don't want other people to see.

If you're on Windows, click your browser window and then press Control + Alt + PrintScreen button (sometimes labeled Prt Sc, Prnt Scr, Prnt Scrn, etc.)

In Mac OS X, press Command-Control-Shift-4, then space, then click your browser window. (The Command key looks a bit like a four leaf clover.)

Go to http://imgur.com/ and paste your screenshot (Control + V on windows, Command + V on Mac). Most of the time, that should bring up an upload window and should have your screenshot showing and ready to click the green "Start Upload" button. (If it doesn't pop open the window when you paste, you may have to click the little cloud with an up arrow icon at the top and then paste. If that still doesn't work, you may need advanced help.)

Once finished, they'll be a link in the box below "Link (email & IM)". You can click the little document to automatically copy it (and if that doesn't work, just highlight the text"). Then just paste it in a message here.

It will look something like:
http://imgur.com/JEAywoP

I recommend just posting that in your message, not trying to otherwise embed the image in your post because it'll make the thread take a long time to load and may mess up the formatting of the messages. If you post the link, we'll be able to click on it just fine.

"I just noticed that the local events on my home page are not the same as the ones on my LibraryThing Local page, though the filters appear to be the same. (The Home Page shows four events on 7/2, while the LT Local page shows only two on that date.)"

I'm also seeing this. And I'm seeing events on the Home page from *way* more than my 25 miles search radius.

During the New Home update I was in the process of editing this book:
http://www.librarything.com/work/14000622/book/99581410
when the site was taken off line to add the new features.

Now when I try to go to 'Edit your book' to finish what I was doing, I land on the same message:

"Back soon!
July 2, 1:45 EDT: We're going to be down for 10-30 minutes. The new design and features will be live soon, but not immediately after this downtime"

It may be that because I was in the process of altering this page when the entire site was updated that this little page was missed out!

What should I do please?

26: It sounds like it could be your browser cache calling up the "Down" page instead of the actual page that should be coming back to you. You can try:
1. Force-reloading your page (hold shift key down while reloading the page or hold control key down while reloading the page).
2. Clearing your browser cache in your browser preferences.
3. Reporting back here so that I can send a team of ninjas to replace the page in your browser cache.

Under the Discover Reviews home page, when reordering the Reviews of My Books appears in full -- not just the header bar. The Hot Reviews and My Recent Reviews, however, only appear as header bars, which are much easier to re-order.

I just spent some quality time re-arranging modules on the home page, but there were a couple of hiccups.

I put From the Blogs on my dashboard and rearranged the order of the modules. Now, all I get is a blank beige bar with the words "No module yet" in the white space below it.

I added a tag to Tag Watch (after feeling sad that the tags from the old Tag Watch seem to have been lost) and was delighted to see a lovely list of books. However, when I moved that module to my Dashboard, I got nuthin'. Just the box asking me to enter a tag. On the Books page, the tag watch is still there and working fine. Do the modules on the two different pages operate independently of each other? For the moment, I'm going to leave it as it is.

On the home page, in the Talk module, I changed the setting to show 25 topics. This works for the subsection currently being viewed when I change the setting, but when I switch to a different tab (eg from 'Your Starred' to 'Started by You') the number reverts to 10 topics shown, and when I go back to the previous tab that too has reverted to 10. I'm having to reset the settings every time I change tab within the module.

Probably more a design issue than a bug, but:

On the home page, I opted to display 2 shelves of my recently added books in 'Very Small' cover mode, along with dates. The books dating from 2012 include the year in the date. The result is that the 2012 dates all jam together, and the dates for those books become unreadable.

The Unused page doesn't keep the module order. That is, I can (and have) reorder the modules, I click save, it shows me the modules in the order I set. I go to anywhere else - another Home page or elsewhere - and return to Unused - they're back in default order.

I want to order them because there are ones there that aren't anyplace else (and I don't see any way to add them). Specifically, I don't want Member Gallery or Junk Drawer on my dashboard but I can't add them to About You where I feel they belong. So putting them at the top of Unused is an adequate solution for now - but while Member Gallery sits at the top, Junk Drawer insists on being at the bottom of the Unused page.

I also see the Reorder and Restore links from the bottom of the page sticking themselves to the side of Member-Uploaded Covers if I put it at the bottom of the page (Dashboard or About You). They work fine with any other module I've tried down there - MUC seems to be missing a divider (it also looks excessively close to the following module, if it's not at the bottom).

BTW - thanks for MUC! It's absolutely wonderful. Something I've been wanting for years with no idea of how it could be implemented...

Oh, and I also see the live links bug from Msg 4. Note that it's the text that's the link, not the whole bar, so it's still possible to reorder the module if you're careful where you click (at least, that's the way it worked with MUC for me. And it's very odd that that sends you to the Groups page...).

Labelling bug (and grammar mistake) in German (and maybe in all non-English sites):

"Talk" message boards in German don't have the "Post message" button under the message box, but a button labeled "Save message". Messages are always "sent", I believe, not saved. Maybe this was corrected in the English version but somehow the old label stuck for the non-English versions.

The wrong label (different from the one used in English) is visible in the "All translations" list, if you search for "Nachricht speichern", which is the text shown on the button in the German version. I went there to correct the text on the button, but left it as is, for now, because I don't know where the label might be used elsewhere.

Non-English users, can you confirm this for your language versions, too?

On the Local page, I see local events that are actually local; I’ve set the search radius to 10 miles. On the Home page Local Events module, whatever the search radius is, it’s too large; the list is overwhelmed by events that would be a two hour drive each way. Also, on the Home page, the Settings link opens a box to change the location, but not the radius. On the Local page, location and radius are changed in separate boxes; maybe these should be consolidated?

Yes, and it's been reported in the other thread that is for bugs with the site design change (this one is for just bugs on the Home page - yes, it's confusing!)

For now, just press enter after typing in the thing you want to search for. That works. It's just that clicking the magnifying glass to search doesn't.

Bug #1:

I added "Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books" to my Dashboard, choosing 5 rows, all covers and high quality only.

When it returned to my Dashboard, it looked like this:

Notice how the covers are oddly chopped off. Upon reloading, it fixes it. So probably lower priority.

Bug #2:

The "Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books" module's header is a link. The link takes you to http://www.librarything.com/groups/yourgroups for some reason.

I added my groups listing to the home page. I tried to sort alphabetically within settings, but the listing didn't change. I tried all three of the sort options--alpha, activity, add date--and there are no changes to the order of the groups. The order is sticking to the group level of activity. Changing the # of groups shown from within settings did work. I hit save, I promise.

I went into settings on some other modules, such as Your Tags and Your Collections, and alpha sort is working correctly on those.

I don't know whether this is really due to the New Home, but in the section called Your Books where it has several links across in a line, it says I have 753 authors. Under Stats/Memes (both dead or alive and male or female) the numbers add up to 752. I have done an analysis of my list of authors, and there are only 752. So the New Home is giving me an author I don't have. It's counting an extra author and I think it might be because of that very strange "None" at the very bottom. (???)

I haven't read through all the reports, but here are a couple of bugs:

(1) I have an empty module I can't get rid of (labelled "No module yet").
(2) When you click on a recent member-uploaded cover, you get two close buttons.
(3) The number of member-uploaded covers is very small, particularly if you filter them. LT shouldn't limit itself by recency, but endeavour to fill up the space requested, regardless of age.

Also, a quick suggestion. When clicking on recent uploaded covers, it would really help if you could see the existing cover, too. It only needs to be relatively small, but I won't know if I want the new cover unless I know how it compares to the existing cover.

Sometimes on my home page I get a very nice 3-column list of my collections, (I have about 70 collections.) It appears when I first log on to the site and I spend a moment or two admiring it. Then I start traveling around the site, but whenever I return to the home page the collections list has changed, and not in a good way. OK - a new twist on the Recent Member-Uploaded Covers. I thought of a way to shorten the check - clicked on a cover, clicked on See work, saw that the book had (as I had remembered) no cover at all, used the Back button to get back to the cover lightbox, clicked on Choose this cover - and nothing happened. I clicked a couple more times, still nothing happened. I clicked on See work - and the cover had been applied. So the confirmation box is not coming up, the lightbox doesn't close and show you the work/book with the newly applied cover, but it is getting applied to my book. Is it that it can't figure out where to go?

118omargosh

Each time I click on a cover under "Recent Member-uploaded Covers", in addition to the lightbox coming up, the page shoots up to the top, so after closing the lightbox, I have to scroll back down to the module. I believe the fix would be to add "event.preventDefault();" or "return false;" after calling si_info_forhome in the onclick handler.

Because of the bug mentioned in by gennyt in 45 about the Talk filters always reverting to 10 threads instead of whatever you chose in settings, I am constantly refreshing the entire dashboard page. In the old design, when I refreshed the home page, FF did a reasonable job of keeping me down where I was in the page (usually near the Talk module), or at least moving me back down there when the refresh was mostly done. In the new design, I always get shot back up to the very top of the dashboard, and have to scroll down each time (ugh). But today when I click reorder I don't get the "bar only view" but instead a page of Fully Open Modules which are almost impossible to move around, because I'm trying to drag all the real estate of an open module past the real estate of other open modules, and I can't see where I am, where I'm going etc.

Not sure if this has been mentioned (though I did look), there's a problem with the ER lightbox not closing after saving settings. Replication steps:
1. Go to Books under discover.
2. Click settings.
3. Edit and save.
4. The lightbox stays on the screen.
5. Clicking cancel after the save will close the lightbox.
This happens on the dashboard, which is how I found the problem to start with.

I still don't buy your explanation 100%, sorry. The old home page also had dynamically loading content but didn't behave the same way. Is there now just way more dynamic content? Did the old one leave more initial space for the content to load? I haven't read all the bugs carefully, so if this is a duplicate, I'm sorry. It's the chocolate distracting me!!! Yummm...

Bugs: When you use Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books and click a cover, the lightbox pops up. On the day of the big release, if you clicked 'choose this cover' the lightbox disappeared and another box popped up to say 'done'. This second box is not happening now, so if you close the first lightbox too quickly, the cover does not get selected. If you wait a few seconds, the cover is changed.

I now have the word 'none' under all my cat photos in Member Gallery module.

Suggestion: It would be nice to have an 'ignore this cover' option to get rid of duplicate covers or unacceptable covers or inappropriate covers. Otherwise, eventually the 'unusable' covers fill all the spots and the only way to get new covers is to add more shelves.

Related bug, go to Reorder the Reviews section. The Reviews for Your Books module is still ajaxing in and is a link.

Is anyone else having the problem of modules remaining expanded (instead of appearing only as 'bars') when in Reorder mode? This makes reordering difficult. It wasn't this way yesterday. I posted it at 131 above to almost no response. Am I missing something?

Hey! Chocolate and books go well together. I do have a candy jar (most often with pieces of bittersweet chocolate) right next to the couch where I do some of my reading. I might also stick some peppermint candy in there. Thanks for the suggestion! ;)

Fixed. It's now not showing the day if it shows the year--so Jan 13 or Feb 2011, but not Jan 13, 2013 or Feb 12, 2011.

By the way, would it be possible to have the scrolling part of the page simply stop at the fixed bars instead of going underneath them? The fact that the browser considers some text to be on the screen but under the bars causes occasional annoyance.

Apologies if this has been mentioned before; I've only skimmed this thread.

The links in the Hot Reviews module don't work correctly. The title link correctly goes to the review BUT the author name also goes to the review and not to the author page and the link to the profile page for the reviewer goes to an error page. It seems the word /profile is missing between www.librarything.com and the reviewers name, i.e., www.librarything.com/reviewername, not www.librarything.com/profile/reviewername.

I'm tracking down the "no module yet" errors. One problem was with the junk drawer—it was the only module with a "_" in the module name, and this messed up the reordering software.

If you still have problems:

1. Tell me what the TITLE of the module is.
2. See if you can reproduce exactly how you got it. Use the "restore to defaults" at the bottom of the home page to clear the page back to its default state.

So far, I have only had the "no module" problem with From the Blogs. I moved it to the Dashboard and it was fine until I tried to reorder the modules. Then it disappeared and I got the "no module" message. So I tried to move From the Blogs to the Dashboard again. The second time it appeared directly as a "no module".

So now I have 2 "no modules" at the bottom of my Dashboard.

Good luck and thanks for all the hard work,

Tim, the no module yet disappeared from my main page and I tried to readd it from the Community page. Then I moved it to the middle of the dashboard. 194keristars
Edited: Jul 5, 2013, 2:07pm Top

Thanks, Tim, that does seem to work! However, the "From the Blogs" module is now seemingly permanently missing from my Community page.

Also, the Junk Drawer reordering didn't "take". I moved it to the top of "Unused" and it fell back to the bottom.

Also, I don't know if this is a bug, but it's related to the scaling text size:

Now that I'm on XP/FF/1024x768 set up, my home page scaling is pretty bad. I have maybe 4 different font sizes, all within a small piece of real estate. I have no idea how to get a screencap of it with this machine (it's somewhat hobbled, and the best I've managed is to PrtScrn to Word or Excel, which just won't work here), so I've taken a photograph.

Going from tiny (1) to largest (5):

Chocolate bar - size 5 bold(?)
Subnav - 1
Leftsubnav - 3
Main section header - 5
Talk label - 3
Talk subnav - 2
Talk List - 3 or 4 (it "feels" like a 4, but might be a 3)

(PS: If it looks like the screen in the photo is stretched horizontally...that's because it is. The actual size of the monitor doesn't match the aspect ratio, and I've never been able to figure out a resolution that does match.)

#177 by eromsted> It's not as simple as the scrolling part going underneath the fixed bars. I thought that at first, but I checked and when you do a page up/down it properly starts the next page at the bottom of the previous page. I've been on plenty of sites where they coded the fixed parts wrong and page up/down always winds up with a few lines at the top of the next page missing because they are underneath. So something slightly more complicated is wrong here, not sure what. I think how they coded it must have hit an edge case in one or all browsers, such that some things work fine (page up/down) but others don't (anchor links).

211 > It's not as simple as the scrolling part going underneath the fixed bars.

Sorry that I don't quite follow all you wrote about previous and next pages in 211, but content is definitely going underneath the fixed bar. The various fixed bars have z-indexes of 1900 and 1901, but the links eromsted noticed are in a div with class .quicklink_chrome that has a z-index of 2000, so they're appearing above instead of tucking under like everything else. (Managing all one's z-indexes can be such a pain in the a**.) The tops of pages appear fine (i.e. they don't start out undernearth) because the divs following the fixed bars all have tall margin-tops. (Sorry if you know all this already and were talking about something else.)

I have wondered like eromsted whether scrolling should be limited to the .content divs instead of the body. Haven't done any tests yet, but I wonder if that might fix the problem with hash links getting partially hidden by the fixed bars.

The Unused page doesn't keep the module order. That is, I can (and have) reorder the modules, I click save, it shows me the modules in the order I set. I go to anywhere else - another Home page or elsewhere - and return to Unused - they're back in default order.

I've removed the reordering buttons. The "unused" is calculated. For consistency's sake, and because the code is hard, it cannot be reordered. Sorry.

There's a case to be made for allowing membes to make their own home page pages. But nobody's raised it, so it can't be very important to anyone.

Nice catch: It was getting a number that it could winnow down from and fill the space. But if you have a filter on—like only high-quality covers—it was winnowing it down way too much from there. Fixed.

Also, a quick suggestion. When clicking on recent uploaded covers, it would really help if you could see the existing cover, too. It only needs to be relatively small, but I won't know if I want the new cover unless I know how it compares to the existing cover.

Because: horror of horrors! That is not what I want from an ER module. I want the link to the list and a link to my list of books won, so that I can easily and quickly check on them.

I don't care about seeing a bunch of covers/titles unless I'm looking at the full list. It's clutter on a page that already feels cluttered and sprawling.

I've actually been wondering for a while if the 13,340 number was off and was maybe doing something like not counting my Undecideds. I of course can't say for sure whether that explains the 2477 discrepancy, but I wouldn't be surprised if I've done 2477 Undecideds ... it actually sounds about right.

I posted this on the design comments thread, but now I'm wondering if it's a bug:

The Your Tags feature alpha sorts the tags horizontally, instead of vertically within the columns. The Your Collections feature alpha sorts the collection titles vertically, within the 4 columns.

Was Your Tags set up to sort across and Your Collections to sort vertically? If not, bug in one or the other?

(If we're taking a vote, I much prefer the vertical sort: It matches the column-type layout and seems more intuitive since there are physical columns in these modules.)

...no it didn't. Or it only had one or two. If I changed any settings, it had the same information that the module currently has, but was just on the top of the righthand side of the page.

I just need a quick place to get the links to books requested/won & full list for Early Reviewers (preferably off to the side somewhere so it's easily accessible but not taking up prime real estate). If there's another module that promotes the books on a regular basis, I would probably enjoy browsing it, though.

It would be nice to have an 'ignore this cover' option to get rid of duplicate covers or unacceptable covers or inappropriate covers. Otherwise, eventually the 'unusable' covers fill all the spots and the only way to get new covers is to add more shelves.

Well, no. Covers come in new when they are new. That's the point of it. But—point taken. There should be a page like this, but not devoted to the "newness" of the covers, right?

It's working as intended. It's all one link--to the review. When the title and author are split out, the one goes to the book/work page, the other to the author. The review page is different. I can see it both ways, but that's how it works.

The problems with the Connections News module. When you click settings it allows you to select which selections groups you want the module to show via a list of tickboxes. I can select the tickboxes I want but it's not saving my selections (it doesn't make any difference to the connections displayed and when I go back into settings it hasn't remembered which boxes I ticked).

Settings not sticking in Talk:Topics module -- "Show how many topics?"

I mentioned this bug above in a short list where the other items have been fixed, but I'm not sure I explained it very well.

I put the Talk/Topics module on my Daschbordt because I prefer to glance at a snapshot of my groups than to deal with everything on the Talk Tab (though I do go there sometimes). The default number of topics shown in the module seems to be 10. I set it to 25 in Your Groups, save it, fine so far. Then I click over to Your Posts -- that's still at 10 so I set it at 25, fine. But when I click back to Your Groups the Topics shown has revert to the 10 default even though when I look at the setting it still shows the 25 I entered; and if I click back to Your Posts that too has reverted to 10 even though it's still set at 25. I can make then all 25 again by re-saving the choices, but they always revert to 10 after you move away and come back.

It does if you think about it. It's the modules that aren't on any pages. So while it doesn't have anything to do with the content of the modules (which might be what you were expecting from the other sub-pages), it does fit contextually,

Re 289 TAGS > I can now see the vertical and horizontal options in the tag settings (Success)

However, if I select count-vertical, or count-horizontal, or alphabetic-horizontal in the settings the settings persist (as you'd expect), and present as the selected options next time I open the settings dialog box (as expected).

But if I select alphabetic-vertical, the tags present themselves as expected on the screen, but then next time I open the settings dialog box the setting has 'jumped' to alphabetic-horizontal. Not as expected.

And, and I suspect this is just a minor thing, clicking on any of my 350 or so tags results in 'not found' (unexpected result). However I can click on the tags section on my Profile page and retrieve the list of files (expected result).

Just thought I'd mention these .... I have unlimited faith in LT to get through to the other side.

>299 nandadevi: Yes, same problem here. My tags are sorted alpha-vertically now (yay!), but if I go into settings, horizontal is selected as the alpha sort option (even though the sort on the dashboard is vertical). Clicking vertical or horizontal sort doesn't change the order of the sort--still just vertical, even though I save the change. Also, when I go back into settings, the default has switched back to horizontal after saving the change. Again, the sort on the dashboard always is vertical, though.

Also, same problem when clicking on the tags. The option to click on the # of tags in our collections--to be taken to our books w/ those tags--now is gone (boo!). Now, when I click on the tag itself, instead of being taken to community info on the tag, I'm taken to my books. But all of the tags are saying no books found. I'm a bit embarrassed to say I've never seen an interface quite like that before. But it makes your talk of next and previous pages make more sense (I couldn't figure out what you meant by next/previous within the context of LT). Re 299 by nandadevi, Bugs >
Bug 1) Coming back to LT after a couple of hours. Clicking on Tags from Home page now fixed, thank you.

Bug 2) Home page Tag Module Settings dialog box selected options (radio buttons) always defaults to 'alphabetic - horizontal' when settings box is opened, even though 'alphabetic - vertical' might have been selected (and successfully executed) on the previous occasion that the dialog box was opened. In contrast, after selecting either of the 'count - vertical' or 'count - horizontal' options, the selected (and executed) option is presented correctly next time the dialog box is opened.

Priority: Bug 2 doesn't affect operations launched from the settings dialog box. It simply affects its default presentation (radio button selection) to the operator when the dialog box is opened. The defaults can then be over-ridden by the operator, and then execute correctly. And this only affects the dialog box when 'alphabetic' choices are selected. Consequently this bug really only relates to a (small) problem with the presentation of screen options, and does not affect operations.

304 Bug with Tags >

No, I'm wrong. Bug (1) still exists. After setting the layout to 'vertical' (concurrently with either 'alphabetic' or 'count') none of the tags will execute when clicked upon. After attempting to execute tag I get a message 'No books found' and am sitting on the 'Your Books' page.

When the setting is on 'horizontal' then tags execute on click, takes me to the 'specialized tag page' which is where I'd expect to be. (It doesn't have a title, but has the URL http://www.librarything.com/tag/mytaghere)

So only disables click-on-tags when settings are in 'vertical' mode.

BUG: the new "Tag Combinations" module on the Helpers home page indicates that there are only 68 open proposals. This is misleading, and had me thinking for quite a while that we must have hit the monthly vote-closing and that I was too late for my latest "why I voted No" post.

There are actually 1780 open proposals. 1712 are just above threshold. But I always wish the above-threshold ones would get more eyeballs too; there are plenty there that are only hanging on by a thread. If there are worries that 1712 will seem daunting (it indeed is), the counts/links could be broken down separately for below-threshold vs. above-threshold (or below-threshold vs. total).

If the tag module is working properly for all sort styles, clicking the # will take you to this info, bypassing the listing (which is reproduced in the tags module, anyway.)

Yes....? The Tags Module (on the homepage) is lacking the editing that's available on the catalog view tags page. That's how I read it too.

I didn't "ask" for anything. I made a comment.
I suppose what I said belonged more on the New Home Comments than the New Home Bugs, but I said it here because it occurred to me as I was following the bug reports on the Tags module. I had that mod on my Dishboard but removed it, & was trying to decide whether to put it back... and Then I noticed I didn't need it, didn't (for myself) care whether the rows, alphas, numbers, etcetc... because all my Tag needs were met by using the Tag link at the top of the Ditchboard, and said so. Then DianaNowling pointed out that the main Tags page was a click away rather than being conveniently on the Dutchbeard, and I commented back that I preferred to make the extra click because there I got to edit, something I couldn't do on the module. I suppose it wd be cool if the module allowed editing, but I didn't ask for it.

Tags Issues Generally: There's some discussion about how we'd like them to operate, but my primary interest is in the following bug...

Bug: When configuring settings at this module:

IF I select either of the two 'horizontal' display options (alphabetic or count), and then click on a tag to examine it, I am taken here (which is where I expect to be taken):

BUT IF I select either of the two 'vertical' display options (alphabetic or count), and then click on a tag to examine it, I am taken here (which is a surprise):

I'd hazard a guess that the inconsistent behaviour (and apparent misdirection) may have arisen at the time that the 'vertical' option was added to the Tags Module. It's not a show-stopper, but it's probably something that would be good to add to the list.

Now it opens the same page as the "tags" link.
Is this intentional, i.e. not a bug?

322. This is happening for me too. I checked my Collections link and it took me to my collections page in tag view; I know I looked at it that way, but don't think that was the last way I looked at it. I tried changing it back to list view, and then linking to it from the home page link and it still went to tag view.

ETA The link shown for Collections is www.librarything.com/tags/rebeccanyc. Is this intentional, since there is a list of collections to the left, or is there some way of just going to a list of collections?

Clicking on any tag on the Home page goes to:

Shouldn't it insert the tag text?

I've seen this mentioned by a couple of people already, but none have gotten any responses.

In the talk module, the default number of lines is 10, but I went into settings and changed it to something else. That works. But when I change from listing starred topics to some other listing, the number of items shown is the default 10. When I go back to my original starred items, it has also reverted to the default 10. (see a better description in post #293)

This is a big problem for me. The talk module is the centerpiece of my home page. Who cares about bells and whistles if the most basic thing isn't working right?

#325 Yes, I'm one of those who's posted about this already, and it's still happening for me.

It may not be the most urgent of issues to deal with, but I hope Tim will find time to pick this one up eventually, as I too am a heavy user of the Talk module in the home page, as the most manageable way of handling Talk for me.

#326 It's a pretty urgent issue for me! I hope it is addressed sooner rather than later.

ETA - actually it seems to be working correctly sometimes. If I click to change the list, it only shows the default 10. If I navigate away from the home page and then navigate back, or if I refresh the screen, it shows my expanded list. If I then change the list, it reverts back to 10 until I navigate away and then come back again.

As per (312) about the 'chocolate bar' issue, I've found another instance of when it moves halfway down the page/screen:

The bar comes halfway down the screen when I am editing a post...but goes back to the top when my virtual keyboard is minimized...

It also comes down briefly when I click on 'Save Message'.

Or you can go to the same place from the Recommandations Home page module by clicking on All Recommendations.

But if I select alphabetic-vertical, the tags present themselves as expected on the screen, but then next time I open the settings dialog box the setting has 'jumped' to alphabetic-horizontal. Not as expected.

Fixed. Thanks.

And, and I suspect this is just a minor thing, clicking on any of my 350 or so tags results in 'not found' (unexpected result).

Fixed. Thanks.

I have unlimited faith in LT to get through to the other side.

Re 336 > Thanks for the tag fixes. I wasn't jumping to conclusions about whether we'd get through to the light or the dark side, or perhaps we ought to say (in our peculiar little world) the high contrast or the low contrast side.

Reluctant to bring this to your very stretched but welcome attention, but...

From the Tag Module on the new Home Page:
When in vertical mode, selecting tags takes me to the books with that tag in 'your books' (which is great)
When in horizontal mode, selecting tags takes me to a description of that tag on a 'tag information page' (which is great)

I can live with the stange-ness of that, but some folk with a more logical bent might find it confusing.

There are actually 1780 open proposals. 1712 are just above threshold. But I always wish the above-threshold ones would get more eyeballs too; there are plenty there that are only hanging on by a thread. If there are worries that 1712 will seem daunting (it indeed is), the counts/links could be broken down separately for below-threshold vs. above-threshold (or below-threshold vs. total).

Yes. Fair enough. I've changed "Open" to open--including all the above-threshold ones. I haven't changed the link, however, since there's currently no way to get all open ones—above and below threshold—together. All things being equal I think this minor inconsistency isn't worth the time necessary to change it.

Yeah, at present they work differently. I think I should probably reduce it to one link—to the catalog for that tag—and kill the tag-page link.

I'm not the OP, but I think it would be nice. If I'm just quickly glancing at my recommendations, I want to be able to get rid of ones that I'm not interested in. Having to go to another page to do that makes it less likely to happen and therefore, makes me less likely to use the recommendations. Not that I need more to read! ;)

I'm not the OP either, but yes please. This would be very useful for the Recent Automatic Recommendations. I can often see at a glance that I want to dismiss most of them immediately, but trying to find where they're lurking in several pages of recommendations that I'm hanging on to can be tricky, and sometimes they've dropped off the New Recommendations so going through the whole list is the only way to find them.

The Top Automatic Recommendations/Recent Member Recommendations aren't a problem, since the all recommendations links list those in the same order.

Back to Recent Member-uploaded Covers for Your Books --

In #157, I complained that after clicking 'choose this cover' in the lightbox, nothing happens to acknowledge that the cover has been changed. The cover actually is changed, but a user does not know this until one goes to look at the book. A bit annoying... and I know it must be on your to-do list.

Anyway, I've been thinking about this module and some of the suggestions about it, and here's my ideal version of it:
The module lists/shows covers for your books which other members have uploaded, from newest to oldest. (This is what is there now.) When you click on a cover, the lightbox opens and there you see your present cover, the source for your present cover, and the new uploaded cover. You are then given the choice to replace your cover with this new one, not replace your cover (cancel), or to dismiss the newly uploaded cover. Once you have done something, the popup acknowledges the changes and you are taken back to the module.

The reasons to have this dismiss cover option are thus:
1. If you already have a member uploaded cover and are happy with it, there is no need to replace it.
2. Even going by ISBN, some covers are 'wrong'.
3. There are times when there are multiple versions of the same cover in the module, so once you pick one, you don't need the others.
4. The more covers you can dismiss, the farther back you go to get member uploaded covers, so the move covers you can replace.

>342 timspalding:, 345 I'd like this, too, for the same reason as 345. Sometimes I base decisions on covers or titles alone. But I guess it would depend on how LT wants its users to see the dashboard. If it's primarily an information hub, then we should have to click through to edit. Also, adding that capability on recs means people will want to edit tags from the dashboard, too (see up thread), so: can of worms?

>339 timspalding: I kind of like being able to click on tags for tag zeitgeist info and on the # of tags for my books. But I'll admit I wasn't using the tag-page info for anything practical; it was just a new toy in the sandbox for me.
