I want to have a party at my library for August 9th and I am having trouble coming up with something that will get people in on a Friday. I am in a small country library, we only have a population of 6000. It is very hard to find things that will peak their interest, and get them in the door. Low budget.

How old is your library? Maybe do something around its history, dress the librarian(s) in period costume, do an exhibit of books published about the same time the library was established.

Do a lot of kids use the library? You could have an essay contest: "Why I Love Books" or "My Favorite Book". Though your time frame is a a bit short for that.

Free food is definitely a plus, too.

What about a blind date with a book on a Friday ? Wrap the books in brown paper with the due date stamped on the outside or something like that. Or Free-ky Friday...free books, free movies etc! And free fun - treasure hunts for kids and grown ups.
