This is continued from "New home - Bugs" ( http://www.librarything.com/topic/156007 ). The old one was just too long to load comfortably.

Go ahead and post your bugs here. I have about a dozen home-page bugs on my own bug list. Chances are, however, that your bug is a new bug. We want to hear it!

For general comments on the new home see:

The new design and the new homes page went live at the same point. For comments on the new design see here. For bugs in the new design see here.

Home page issues
* Not using the users' default image; see http://www.librarything.com/topic/156007#4176083
* making the covers smaller doesn't seem to make the overall height of the module smaller in sync. ts
* Add back "Recently added by other members"

To discuss
* "I was thinking that to be able to add your own recommendations based on what's going on would be useful. Example: An Egyptian coup d'Etat then I could put on the design the books that reference Egypt. I would prefer that to member recommendations that are too often off the chart from what are the books I look into. I like very much the covers."
* Make the modules remember the last size they were. Basically JQuery back any sizes and store them. Then use them, within a div ithin the inarea, so it gets wiped out.
* Change-cover improvement http://www.librarything.com/topic/156007#4178024 and the next one.

Based on the headings in >3 timspalding:, I'd add / re-list the following issue:

As per (312) about the 'chocolate bar' issue, I've found another instance of when it moves halfway down the page/screen:

The bar comes halfway down the screen when I am editing a post...but goes back to the top when my virtual keyboard is minimized...

It also comes down briefly when I click on 'Save Message'.

Original bug report:

(312)
I don't see this addressed:

I'm using my iPad, and noticed that the 'chocolate bar' that should be at the top of the page has a tendency to suddenly appear halfway down the screen. While editing a review, it appeared over the text box. I had to close the page to get rid of it.

I'll try to make note of other situations when the bar leaves the top to settle in the middle of the page. :)

P.S. It did it just now, when I clicked on 'Save Message'

Adding to the "think" list. The old one didn't filter either, so it's not a bug per se.

RE: text-sizing issues on iPhone:

I'm using an HTC One with Firefox for Android, and I'm getting the text-sizing issues over much of the site, but particularly on the homepage. The text doesn't scale comfortably according to the zoom, as long as I'm not at the bird's eye view.

Look into making it relative and not fixed, perhaps? This should also make it so you don't need to define 11px or 12px sizings, for people whose personal browser settings have larger or smaller default fonts. On my phone, some of the text size isn't defined, so it does scale neatly, but then it doesn't match...

RE: Adding to the "think" list. The old one didn't filter either, so it's not a bug per se.

I'm really confused by you referring to old ER/MG lists that are mostly the same as the new modules. Where did those appear? I never had lists of books on my homepage - only a small section with links to the full pages and requested/received status.

I think you addressed Tim, but I'll try to clarify as I understand it.

The ER module on the right column of the old Home was only a summary with a link, as described in your post. The MG module, however, did include a short list of books, I believe the 3-4 most recently available offerings, and this list did not support filtering. I think this accounts for Tim's adding to the "Think" list rather than to "Issues" as I proposed.

Re: my msg 32.

I was just fiddling with the Recently Member-Uploaded Covers module. If you choose the cover that's been uploaded, the module doesn't show that one anymore (yay). If, however, you're perfectly satisfied with your cover on that book (or the new one doesn't match your cover, or it's one of those with the scratches, or whatever), there's currently no way to clear it out of the module. And while, theoretically, newer covers should be coming up all the time - the second cover in my list has been there since I discovered the module (the day or the day after the New Home Page was released, so a couple days at least). Presumably so has the first, and some of the others, but I don't remember them - I remember the second cover, because it's almost as good as my cover (a little darker) and I went to the work to check it out carefully. But I chose to keep my uploaded cover...so there's no way to stop seeing the new one. Which is why a dismiss option - a No Thanks for the display of the cover - would be so useful.

Huh. And then I clicked More - and got two more rows of covers, at the top and interspersed with the old ones, and the More option has disappeared. How is that option supposed to work? I was expecting either to go to a page with more options/controls (as well as more covers), like Recommendations; or a new set of covers, presumably older, like Tag Watch. Is it just showing some low-quality covers mixed in with the high-quality previous bunch? And is that all the covers I can see - can't move back in time to older ones? Again, LMHTWB's suggestion sounds like something that would be extremely useful.

I've made a number of "slimming" changes, to give you more space for modules at a glance.

1. The headline of the home page pages has been removed. You can tell where you are based on the left nav.

2. The "shelf" interface is now tighter. I was only able to tighten it for the default ("covers") mode. The "shelf" mode is not tighter.

3. Various elements respond to a smaller window. Notably the news currently goes away entirely if you have a smallish screen. (I'm working on a module for it, so you can see it.)

4. Various little tightenings, like slightly less padding around the name of every module.

#35Thanks for removing the headline of home page!

I've checked out the Books Added - presume this is (one of) what you meant by the shelf interface. I'm still seeing a margin of white space above the covers when set to small, very small or tiny, which is not there when set to Medium or above. Can this be tightened up too at some point? But only if you refresh the module page. Otherwise, the selected covers sit there, taking up space.

The "More" is interesting. Like you said, an interspersion of covers, a weird mix. I'm now getting a mix of high-quality and not high-quality covers, instead of for my ISBN's only -- they are for all covers, and some of the more recent covers (June 2013) have vanished and been replaced by ones as far back as January 2013.

I have also experienced error messages that appear in the tag box - such as the one I have included below for your inspection.

I wish the page would reflow better on resizing. For example, here's what you get when you start off larger when loading the page and get smaller (especially common if you have the browser maximized and then you restore it):

But then if you reload the page, you get:

First off, it's more of a bug that the "Your books" module doesn't know how to split it's data onto multiple lines at smaller sizes (and maybe that the search box doesn't resize).

But it's a bug/lacking feature that the page doesn't know how to reflow by changing columns as you resize rather than only on reload. I know code like that is hard so I don't expect it to happen soon. But it would make for a better experience, I think. You may say people, don't usually resize, and that's probably true. But I would say they maximize/restore more often. And especially in newer versions of windows, just dragging a window can often make it resize because MS has some "helpful" "snap to side" logic that changes the size for you. And when these things happen, it just makes the site look buggy.

Nothing particular added. Missing feature, I suppose, although this is a low-value, low-interest module.

I wish the page would reflow better on resizing

Yeah, I really really don't care. I care about what it looks like on different sizes or on reload, but making windows smaller and larger without a reload is not something I care about. It's not a common use case.

I know you feel otherwise on this, but, it's I'm going to work on.

I've made the recently-added go into columns, if possible.

65Talvitar

Recently-added into columns - great. But: I just went to dashboard to check the new column feature. When I tried to click on "Settings", it threw me up on the page. Any module I tried did the same thing.
Now, I'm using the Finnish site - I tried the same thing on lt.com and it worked just fine.
Something wrong with the language sites or is it just the fi.site? The 'settings' worked fine yesterday, I think, so this is a new problem.
I tried this with both IE and Firefox so it's not a browser-related thing, I think.

#64 by timspalding> Yeah, I really really don't care. I care about what it looks like on different sizes or on reload, but making windows smaller and larger without a reload is not something I care about. It's not a common use case.

And it's not like there's some sort of magical device that resizes the page when you turn it sideways.

BTW, new bug. When you make your browser window small enough and reload, the right Top News, etc. column disappears (as intended). But then when I make it bigger (like, super big) and reload, it stays gone. FF and Chrome both.

ETA: Hmm, it seems to EVENTUALLY come back. But it's taking more than a few page reloads (while leaving at the new larger size). I did it again, and my reloads still haven't brought it back. Neither has changing o a different subpage and back to Dashboard.

Minor bug:

When I went to the Connection News module and went into the Settings, Omit Covers was selected by default. However, it wasn't omitting covers by default. Either Show Covers should be the default or it needs to omit covers by default.

Incredibly minor quibble:

So you use "Title Case" for module headers and "Sentence case" just about everywhere else in the LT UI. So on the left "Connection news". On the right, "Connection News".

Not sure if this is a bug: I set the sort on Reviews of Books in my Library on the Discover > Reviews sub-page, deliberately selecting a different sort from that used on my Reviews page (the one showing my review in the left column, and reviews of my books by others in the right column). When visiting the latter page, the sort had changed in parallel. So I re-set it on my Reviews page, looked back on the Home module, and sure enough, the change was mirrored.

Are these 2 places actually two different views of the same page, and so settings apply in both places? I was expecting them to be different, the way the module on the Dashboard can hold settings different from those on the Home sub-pages.

My choices aren't "sticking"

I chose to have the shelf under Newly Added. I have to put it back every time I go to the page as it is always missing.

I chose 'lists' under recommended books, hot this month and what members are reading. Again, I have to do it each time I go there as it reverts to covers.

I chose 'starred' for talk and it has to be done each time, as it reverts to 'all topics'

Tim: The way you have the Talk module overriding what the grouping is in the Talk tab is confusing people (look around and you'll see the posts).

1) Click on Home tab and go to the Talk module
2) Click on All topics grouping
3) Click on Talk tab
4) Click on Groups and posts grouping
5) Click on Home tab
6) Click on Talk tab

You are now set back to All topics grouping in the Talk tab.

This is especially problematic if people don't even realize they have the Talk module on their Home because it's far down the page.

What needs to happen is that a change to the grouping in the Talk tab needs to be reflected in the Talk module. Right now, it's one-way the other way around.

(This was a problem in the old Home as well, but we got you to fix it.)

Now he's done it and your just reinforcing his old opinion. In my view there is no point in having a talk module if I can't set it up differently from the talk tab. The talk module is smaller and it makes sense to set it up with a setting where fewer posts will appear.

Ah, so that's what's happening. I went to both places (actually, all three, as I have the talk module on the Dashboard page as well as its normal subpage) and set them all the same until it stuck, but I did wonder this morning why I was seeing so many posts I had no interest in.

I started trying to fix it from the Talk page first, so I'd definitely vote for letting that rule the relationship if there is one, or for a divorce between tab and module.

So, I'm confused. If you move a module from a Home sub-page to the Dashboard it stays in the sub-page (yes, I know that Dashboard is a sub-page too, but I'm not sure how else to say it). And now you've added the ability to move a module from one sub-page to another and presumably it will also remain on the original sub-page.

I thought with this latest new feature was going to allow us to customize the sub-pages so if something doesn't make sense to us on one page we could move it to another where it makes more sense to us. But if it remains on the original page then we can't do that. What if I move it, I guess I should say add it since it doesn't actually move. What if I add a module from it's original home to multiple other places? Can I get the same module in three or more places?

I'm sorry, but this just isn't very intuitive.

132Collectorator
Edited: Jul 12, 2013, 11:53pm Top

131, You use Add to make a module also go to a different section. Then you can go back to that module's natural home and Remove it. It's easy.

133timspalding
Jul 13, 2013, 12:51am Top

Yeah, it's not a move, it's an add. To move, add and delete.

I hear where you're coming from, but a number of modules already live two places. The dashboard is still the default choice to add things to. I think it's more likely you'll want to add things to your dashboard than MOVE things to your dashboard.

ETA. It is one of those frustrating bugs (to debug). It is not consistant!

I've expanded the text field for the notepad. It's now endless. It was 1024 characters.

Ah, I didn't scroll back down again. Still a bug, though.

Fixed. Sorry. This is a common problem with JavaScript--you have to remember to "return false." It screws me up because I tend to test modules by putting them first, where the bounce doesn't happen. Mea culpa.

The string "Tag watch" allows you…

Fixed. Thanks.

I have set the module to display paper in The Netherlands (which is one book this time 'round). But yet I see 8 books. The first is the book available to me, the others aren't available or are e-books.

Fixed. Thanks.

Can you try just refreshing the page? I want to understand if it's the settings that's doing it, or just a refresh of what you're doing. Also, I'd be interested to know if it happens if you add another book--do you get one, or two. (If two, there's something wrong with the second book.) As it stands, I can't get it to duplicate, although I'd also need your browser and OS to duplicate it right.

In the dashboard, in Recently Added, when the covers are medium or smaller, the word underneath (eg "Yesterday") overlaps the word next to it. I can make the words stop overlapping if I make my screen slightly wider.

ETA: Or use the larger cover image.

Not sure if anyone else sees this:
Connection News Author Connections header goes down the page as you scroll obscuring some of the books. I don't think it's supposed to do that.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but on the Dashboard if you click 'xxxx' tags it takes you to the tags page. Okay, that's what I expect.

However, if you click on the ' >> All xxxx' tags in the tags section it takes to right back to the Dashboard page. I would expect to be taken to the tags page.

#160, Tim.

On entering, and just getting my latest 'added', (one say, but if I add 2 books I get only 1 but get the other one if I press next ), If I just 'refresh', I DO get them ALL. No need to go to settings and save nothing. Still happening today.

Hmmm. I think this means it's not sure how much space there is, so it's deciding it's 0. That's probably some sort of weird timing issue. Ick.

Just to be clear, we're talking about the "covers" mode, right? Not titles or shelf?

I've added in some extra data capture for you. Try hitting the page again?

However, if you click on the ' >> All xxxx' tags in the tags section it takes to right back to the Dashboard page. I would expect to be taken to the tags page.

I've changed it two links:

» All 695 tags » Tags page

Click the former. It should expand the list.

Connection News Author Connections header goes down the page as you scroll obscuring some of the books. I don't think it's supposed to do that.

Take a look at posting this on the design topics. This is for home-page bugs only. ConceptDawg and I need to split the load, and divide the topics.

#167 by timspalding> It's really hard, even for someone who tries to follow all this stuff like me, to figure out that the stuff that appears on the right side of the Home page (and ONLY the home page) is not "Home page" stuff but "design" stuff. Damn hard.

And I'm still not sure what the poster even means. I don't have any "Connection News" or "Author Connections" on the right side. Or what header they mean.

I'm currently watching the tag "Vertigo." It displays the Saucer Country vol. 1 that I tagged a while back, but not the Annotated Sandman Vol. 2 that I tagged days later. I have it set to "published anytime, keep duplicates," so I don't think it should be filtering anything out.

I did that last night. No reply yet, but on the other hand I haven't checked whether it's still not working on my laptop (using a different computer now: Mac running Firefox, and not experiencing the problem.)

Hope this makes sense: In the former home page, I could read a talk topic and then click 'back' and return to the 'Home' page with the same view as before. But now, when I click 'back', it always returns to the top of the 'Home' page, and I have to scroll down to find where I was in the topics list. This makes reading 'Talk' topics from the dashboard quite tedious. The same issue (returning to the top of the 'Home' page) seems to apply to all Dashboard modules - when you click on a link, going back takes you to the top rather than back to the view you originally left.

I checked, and the Dashboard exhibits the same behaviour in IE9 and Chrome28.

Os.

Ya, easiest way to avoid that is just using the Talk tab or shift or ctrl-clicking to open in a new tab or window

Edited: Jul 17, 2013, 12:01pm Top

#178 This must be browser specific, because I use the talk module in the same way, using Back to return, and it always takes me back as before to the Talk module. This is on an Android phone, and on desktop and laptop using Chrome and Vista.

I agree it must be v annoying to go back to the top each time.

Yeah, I'm not sure I can fix that behavior. Back buttons are hinkey when it comes to pages that resize. I suggest command (or whatever)-clicking, to open a new tab.
