I'm new to this site and I hope someone will be able to help me! I read a book many years ago a romance novel and cannot for the life of me remember the name or author. Here is what i remember about the plot:
- takes place in the U.S some time after the civil war
- begins on a boat/ferry boat maybe? that is going down a river and it has passengers on board. the heroin of the book has jet black raven hair and her father is a drunk who lost all their money. She also has a brother who is missing since the war. One the boat is also her black stalion,,all she has left..her horse that she loves.
- the guy: rich..owns a ranch i think and has horses. I believe the girls father gambled away the horse to the rich guy. the girl at one point helps her father cheat at cards and they win some money and she is able to eat some food in the wealthy dinning area where the rich guy sees her. in any case at some point she runs away with her horse but comes back to find the rich guy because he has her father. she becomes ill and he nurses her back to health but then proposes she become his mistress. she says yes because she loves him and because she has no money. her father begins working in his stable. at some point, the girls brother returns from the war but is missing a limb. then later one she and the rich guy travel to france and she knows she is prego with his child. when she asks him how he feels about being a dad he says he is not interested so she leaves him. he is depressed and spends a long time searching for her. he finally finds her living in a small house and tries to get her to return to him. she hides that she has his baby. then some time later she visits his house with her baby and eventually they marry.
Does anyone know the title of this book!?? I'm going nuts because i cannot figure it out! Please help!
2nd title: this is another book i read some time ago and i cannot remember the title either:
not sure of all the facts but the plot is something like this:
the girl somehow finds out she has a father who is wealthy and lives on a big plot of land (maybe aranch). this is some place out west i think CA or maybe south..the workers are mostly hispanic. it turns out that her father actually had stolen the dead to that property and the man he stole it from lives near by and also leads a gang of people trying to get his revenge or land back. Anyways, at some point the younger brother of the gang leader i believe dies or gets killed by the rich father and so the gang leader kidnaps the white rich guys daughter. He drags her behind his horse. he ties her to the back and makes her walk behind him the entire journey up to his hideaway in the mountains where he and other people live. she is in bad shape when he gets there. she is basically like his slave/captive. i don't recall much of the middle but at some point i think he marries her and while staying in a hotel she is almost raped by his rival enemy. he thinks she wasn't raped but was actually cheating on him and so he leaves her. then at some point as they live separately, she is left the great plot of land/ranch by her white rich father (he died? ). in the end she gets back together with the gang leader guy and he does this like cultural latin dance for her where he dances around her.
