Safety issues related to book carving with power tools were just posted here.
It is Halloween. How better to strike fear into a bibliophile's heart than by destroying books?
I think an infestation of termites and silverfish might be worse...
Did i ever tell anyone about the time I pulled a dictionary off the shelf only to discover that termites had started to turn it into their new home. Luckily, they only ate a little way into the B's and there's only one definition (or half a definition) missing on each page.
Is it okay to dress someone (or something) else up as a literary character, rather than yourself?
>8 LShelby: If it's not human, try to keep it within the parameters of a pumpkin (or other like vegetable), so it fits within the second category...! What or who do you have in mind?
>9 matthewmason: I didn't actually have anything specific in mind. But most of the characters I can think of of that fit my general body type would be rather boring from a costuming viewpoint. But I do have six kids who would give me a greater range of potential characters if its allowed.
I also happen to be in the process of making a "literary costume" for a friend's doll. That's why I thought to include the "or something".
>10 LShelby: While a doll costume may not be eligible for the winning of prizes, we'd still love to see it! And it may well mean that a) we have some uncategorized honorable mentions, and b) we need to rethink our categories for next year!
>11 lorannen: "While a doll costume may not be eligible for the winning of prizes, we'd still love to see it!"
I can't promise anything. I'm a slow worker and have a tendency to finish projects after the contest is already over.
But if not this year, then next year for sure! :)
Looking for pumpkin inspiration? Buzzfeed has some amazing examples here: http://www.buzzfeed.com/kangaru/18-literary-pumpkins-for-a-bookish-halloween-bmb...
This is Halloween, true. However, we thought it'd be nice if we gave people a bit of time to get their photos of their amazing costumes and pumpkins uploaded. Submissions close next Friday, Nov. 8th, and we'll announce winners sometime Monday!
ETA correct dates
That's next Friday as in tomorrow or as in Friday of next week? I only ask because I'd expect you to just say Friday, as opposed to next Friday, if the Friday in question were in the current week.
>16 jjwilson61: My apologies. Norabelle is right--Nov. 8th is the deadline.
I see you didn't specify which "Monday" you meant when you said the winners would be announced then....
Thanks for your patience everyone—I forgot that Monday, yesterday, was a holiday.
We have our winners! Check them out here.
The link for the first winner goes to the gallery of the second one.
