There's a new (and quite expensive!) Easton Press three-volume version of Verne's Mysterious Island up for sale. Looks great from the pictures. But does anyone have any thoughts on the length of this set? I have a dim memory of reading the book when I was much younger, but I don't recall that it seemed long enough to merit three volumes.

The page count seems to be a bit off to me as well. The translation that they are using was heavily abridged. This set would def. make a beautiful addition to any library but for a reading copy I would say stick with the Kravitz or Stump translations.

With that said I really like these volumes. The Mysterious Island and 20000 Leagues Under the Seas were always my favorite Verne novels. The binding is beautiful, and the illustrations are wonderful.

I did some research yesterday and this "famous 1875" edition is either based on the English edition (also published in three volumes with these individual titles) or on the American edition which itself was based on the English edition. I noticed the notoriously poor EP website does not provide a picture of the title page to get any additional clarification. Also, for these prices they should come with either a solander box or the sturdy slipcases that at least used to be a prominent feature of the Deluxe Limited Edition line. I fear they have started cheapening out on this series, first evident in the otherwise lovely Pilgrim's Progress arriving sans slipcase. I have ordered this set, but I remain a bit skeptical as to the production quality, and may end up sending them back if they do not live up the production values of Journey To The Center of the Earth or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, both of which come with nice solander boxes to protect the books.

UK_History_Fan: Did you ever get the Easton Press version of Mysterious Island? If so, what did you think of it?

I did. It is better than I was expecting given the recent decline in quality as the DLE line has exponentiated. This set, while not the best ever produced, is still a cut above some of the more recent offerings and upon receipt I had no purchase regrets. The three volumes are much smaller than I expected but housed in a high quality slipcase and the illustrations are not quite as "muddy" as other DLEs. Is it worth the cost, not really. Did it exceed my expectations? Definitely. Recommended.

Or you can pick up the gorgeous (letterpress, illustrated by Edward Wilson, signed, limited edition) LEC version for ~$50.

Not for long (my bank account). I just returned from a very expensive UK vacation and within a week my company announced a major restructuring that is eliminating my position in the next few months. I will become a lurker on here who must enjoy new acquisitions vicariously for a while. But I will drain my life savings before I sell off my library (other than the nearly 200 duplicates I need to cull).

Does anyone know the original price for this set from Easton Press? I recently was hoping to bid on a set on eBay, but the seller ended the auction several days early for some reason. But it looks like they sold it to the first person that placed a bid. I don't think that is fair to end an auction early like that. Maybe I should have placed a bid right away. Now I am looking at other options. Looks like this set is only available on eBay. I see one for $675. How inflated is this price compared to the original price from Easton Press?
