I can be distracted even to read a book of only 100 pages, I really believe I need to read something of great interest to me. Television viewing is not to be blamed for distracting to read books. It is a lame excuse.

Share your experience how you overcome and handle the distractions to read books.

For me it's not a mood thing, it's a book thing. I am easily distracted from reading a book which is rewarding but hard going, and often sit in front of the computer, watch TV or whatever instead, but an exciting page turner will always be prioritised.

1. Pull out the plugs to your television set, computer monitor, and switch off your smartphone, ipod. This is an ideal scenario.

2. Discipline and will-power to read are what we need.Easy say than doing it.

It's just like sex, I'm always in the mood - it's finding the opportunity that can be the challenge.

Coffee works for me. It fills me with a great love for humanity and everything seems so fascinating. Tea and chocolate also work well. Soda doesn't.

I don't really try to avoid distractions though. I read most books on my computer, and so I take frequent detours from my book to the Internet. I get through plenty anyway.

Another thing that really works for me is having something else really important to do. Nothing makes things interesting like procrastination.

I often get distracted from books by other books, especially with nonfiction. Something I read will make me think of something else I read, or go looking for something that was mentioned.

I'm not as easily derailed by fiction, unless the writing is boring, in which case I am very easily distracted by my dogs.

Always in the mood to read to the exclusion of most everything else! I go back and forth between my Kindle and a real book.

How could one NOT be in the mood to read a book?

On another one of your topics, razz, I think you were asking opinions on reading multiple books at once. That's my solution for a slow/tough one: read something else alongside that's easier/lighter, and alternate.

I am easily distracted ever since I quit smoking several years ago. Also, I get interrupted by many things through the day. If I am lucky enough to get something really interesting, I do best reading it later in the evening when I seem to feel that I am done with work and the local world is asleep.

But I ALWAYS wish I was reading a good book instead of doing most of whatever else I have to do. And I feel very lucky when I find a book that interests me so much that I pause in the reading to look up more information - such as Duchess about the Duchess of Devonshire.

If the book is interesting and I'm enjoying it, I have no problems with getting distracted -- only with finding enough time to read. If, however, I find myself being distracted, then I start asking myself if I'm really interested in the book. If the answer is 'no', then I find a different book. Life is too short and there are too many books to force myself to read something I don't care about.

Keep off Librarything, which can distract you (or me, at least!) for hours.
Set yourself a challenge: decide how many pages a day, then blitz the book. But if you're really not enjoying it, then don't pursue it...

I am having this trouble with American Gods. I just wasn't getting it, so I was planning to switch to something else. Then suddenly, there was a chapter I found interesting, so I kept going. Then another chapter I didn't like, but I kept going anyway. Now I think I am in for the whole thing, but let's see. Part of the problem right now is that I am in a "can't find anything to read" mood. Happens rarely, but when it does, it is very unpleasant.
