Hi, I love reading science fiction especially from the 60s and 70s and for a while now I have been collecting DAW paperbaks from that period, also because I like the title selection, cover artwork and small size. Wonderful books. The thing is, where I live (Japan), it is so difficult to get them. A book costs me about 2$-5$, but shipping is usually 12$ or much more. I will soon be in Houston, Texas for a few days. Any used bookstore you can recommend, which might carry DAW yellow spine paperbacks especially from the 60s, 70s, 80s? I want to buy as much as I can carry. Also, Ace doubles. I have no idea what you can find in a used bookstore in the US, I have only a few hours to go to a bookstore. Would love to get some recommendations, thank you very much!

Hi and welcome!

There is a four member Texas Thinger group; small but active: http://www.librarything.com/groups/texanswholibrarythi1
First ask there for advice.

Secondly, you can use the Local tab at the top and enter the city. You'll get a lot of libraries, but lots of bookstores as well. Just on the first page I found Kaboom Books
http://www.librarything.com/venue/4420/Kaboom-Books-

with phone and email contact info. I would inquire directly with your specifications. You might be able to pre-shop, either getting staff to send you inventory lists or even a photo of the science fiction shelves.

You can be more specific with your Local search using zip codes; I just searched by city. Sounds like efficiencies like these might help you gather many more books in the short time you have.

Happy hunting!

PS: Another glance at the Local page shows a Half Price Books
http://www.librarything.com/venue/2744/Half-Price-Books-Montrose

with a good review suggesting this store might be golden: "My favorite HPB for sci-fi and fantasy"

There are several active members who frequent that store, and they may chime in here later.

And in the meanwhile, you can begin entering the books you already have to your collection here. There is a phone and tablet app you can download so as to have access to your collection lists while you are shopping and you can avoid buying doubles.

Here are some options:

Paperback Exchanges - two locations, no website that I can find
Becker Books - one location, http://www.houstonbooks.com/
1/4 Price Books - one location, no website that I can find -- On a personal note, I went in one time and immediately turned around and left. The guy at the checkout totally squicked me out. Also, nothing in that store in 1/4 of the cover price, fair warning.

Yelp has a pretty good list: http://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=bookstores&find_loc=Houston%2C+TX%2C+USA
