Just thought I'd let you know that I created a list of bookstores in New York City over on WikiThing. Currently there are 92 stores mentioned, I'm sure there are some I've missed or couldn't verify.
My basic criteria for including something on the list was that the store had to fit one of the following:
The list is really lacking in the outer boroughs, especially the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. I'm also missing a lot of the small neighborhood language or religious-centered stores. They might not be popular as a more general bookstore, but hey, someone might want to shop there.
Feel free to add more stores that you know are still open. Oh, and there's no real hard rule about the "specialties" box, just that it should be short and accurate. I was thinking, that if people wanted to add more information on a particular store, then they could just make a separate page for the store and put their review there, linking from the main bookstores page.
Just so I understand, is it OK if the bookstore doesn't have a web site? This is a great idea.
Also, I'm a little technology challenged. How do I get the text to fit in the boxes of the table?
It's fine if the bookstore doesn't have a website, several of the stores on the list right now don't have one. (Like the awesomely named "Unoppressive, Non-Imperialist Bargain Books")
The table is a basic table, I didn't put any extra code for column width or color or anything. So as it is now, the boxes will resize to fit the text. Failing that, the text will automatically break to the next line.
Note that in the address field, I put a line break between the number/street and the city/state/zip code. That's just to keep it readable.
