It is great pleasure to kick off SantaThing's 2016 donation thread!

**After some thought about the concerns raised around donations this year, we've decided to adjust to our policy regarding SantaThing donations. Members will be eligible for SantaThing donations if they meet the following two criteria:

- They must have been a member for at least two months (so, their account must have been created no later than September 15, 2016).
- They must have at least 50 books cataloged in their account.*

*Suggestions! If you are in a rut with this one and unsure how to get your book amount up try this! Add books to your wishlist or books you have read but do not own. As long as the overall count is over 50 then you are good to go!

The former is not easy to get around, but it is fairly easy to add more books to one's account if you're not quite at the 50 book threshold yet. Should someone in this situation request a donation, either ladylenneth or lorannen will contact them directly to encourage them to beef up their catalog first.

I'm sorry that it's come to this, but we had to draw the line somewhere. Donating members have expressed valid concerns over the years about donations going to accounts that are essentially empty, which additionally makes the recipient very difficult to pick gifts for. I welcome feedback about this shift in policy.

This is not to say that donating members cannot personally decide to offer a donation to a brand-new member requesting one. Just that this thread will not be putting members on the list who don't meet these criteria.**

Please feel free to ask if you are in need of a donation! If you want to become a secret santa and give an anonymous donation please feel free to message me directly. :)

Oh joy, Santathing is up! This is one of my favorite things to look forward to each year, as it's the only time I get any new books! As usual, I can't afford the cost of participation because husband is on medical and we have 3 young ones, but I would be so happy to have a sponsor! Thank you!

Taken! Thankyou again!

>33 mellymel171328: Several of these names look like spam and I see at least two that have been removed. It's sad to have to say it but you may need to put some kind of qualifiers on this, like having been a member for X amount of time or some such. Because right now it looks like there's some people just trying to steal generosity.

Nov 19, 2016, 3:11pm Top

>35 .Monkey.: I am currently talking with lorannen about how to resolve this issue. We have had people join in the past just because a friend or family told them about LibraryThing and SantaThing and not being able to afford it was directed to this thread. I know I like to give people the shadow of the doubt. Out of the at least 6 years this donation thread as been ran this is the first time we have sadly ran into this. Thank you for pointing it out, it is being looked into.

Nov 19, 2016, 3:13pm Top

>35 .Monkey.: Jeez.

Given how quickly spammers are identified and removed here, maybe just a month would be sufficient? Or evidence of an active catalog?

Nov 19, 2016, 3:13pm Top

>33 mellymel171328: and >35 .Monkey.: I concur with this. It's sad, but there it is. I'm not sure how to go about verifying accounts, but do agree that preference ought to be towards members that have been around for a bit (even 3 months seems adequate). This (the support of our members for SantaThing) is one of the kindest things there is about LT, and it makes me sad to see this.

Nov 19, 2016, 3:13pm Top

>35 .Monkey.: I understand your concern. Fortunately, I can tell from this end (and emailing with the member involved) that this is a misunderstanding that spiraled, rather than malicious intent to abuse SantaThing. I'll be getting things tidied up later today, and all should be well by this evening.

Nov 19, 2016, 4:28pm Top

I'm so impressed with the generosity of "strangers" here, especially during what is for many a very trying time. So it makes me very sad to think about people spamming that generosity. That being said... can the PayPal code be used for anything other than LibraryThing'd Secret Santa?

In any event, thanks to both Lady Lenneth and Loranne for their attention to the matter and their efforts in general regarding such a joyous event for so many.

I am happy to be able to donate this year - Lady Lenneth I'll be in touch personally when I get it all together :)

Nov 19, 2016, 4:56pm Top

>39 lorannen: Glad you're taking care of everything, the generosity of this event is always lovely to see and I'd hate for that to be marred by anyone.

Nov 19, 2016, 5:15pm Top

I would love to participate. I've done it the last year and it was awesome!

Nov 19, 2016, 5:21pm Top

>40 avanders: That's a good question. I'm pleased to be able to say that, no, it's not a possibility. The way PayPal's API works, we're checking PayPal receipt numbers against, not just valid payments, but payments that have shown up in our specific account. That's at the very basic level. I don't know the SantaThing code, so I wouldn't be surprised if we're not checking them against other factors, as well—that's just the extent of my knowledge in that area.

Additionally, there's no other place on LT that uses this same system. Memberships (even gift memberships) work differently, so it's not like someone could take their donated SantaThing entry, turn around and use it on an LT membership or LT store purchase.

Hi everyone! This is usually the highlight of my season- even more than receiving books, I love picking them for my Santee! I was sad this year that I may not get to pick because I can't afford to sign up. If I could perhaps go on the "in need of donation" list that would be so wonderful- but I want all children or children of Librarythingers to come before me! So maybe if you could leave me on the list for a while and make sure that they are all taken care of first, that would make me happy. I'm so grateful to be a part of such a humbly benevolent community. "Hanging out" with you guys during SantaThing always makes my season brighter.

Hey, ladylenneth. I'm sure I'm a familiar name. *blush* MrMorphy doesn't need a donation this year but I sure would like one. I'm on disability and it's our only income. He was denied but his disability hearing should be next summer and with luck we're hoping that next year we'll actually be able to be able to participate on our own.

Nov 21, 2016, 4:28pm Top

After some thought about the concerns raised around donations this year, we've decided to adjust to our policy regarding SantaThing donations. Members will be eligible for SantaThing donations if they meet the following two criteria:

- They must have been a member for at least two months (so, their account must have been created no later than September 15, 2016).
- They must have at least 50 books cataloged in their account.

The former is not easy to get around, but it is fairly easy to add more books to one's account if you're not quite at the 50 book threshold yet. Should someone in this situation request a donation, either ladylenneth or I will contact them directly to encourage them to beef up their catalog first.

Just that this thread will not be putting members on the list who don't meet these criteria.

>68 lorannen: I think this very reasonable policy is an excellent idea.

Nov 22, 2016, 11:13am Top

>68 lorannen: I have a question. :) would adding books to wishlist and books not owned but read count towards the 50?

Nov 22, 2016, 11:17am Top

>70 mellymel171328: Absolutely. There just has to be a grand total of 50 books, across all collections, in the account.

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for all the efforts to host SantaThing again, and especially to the wonderfully generous persons who donate every year.

I used to be able to sign up for myself as well as my co-worker, Lilia who is on a reduced income. However, like last year, I can't afford it. I would love to have a donation for Lilia, who generally does not receive much in the way of Christmas presents. I don't mind not participating myself, but if anyone could donate to her, I would be really glad.

Nov 22, 2016, 12:02pm Top

>72 sangreal: I remember you from last year. :) I will be sending you a message soon.

Nov 22, 2016, 1:12pm Top

Thank you so much, ladylenneth and to the donors also, for being able to donate to both Lilia and me. It is truly appreciated!

Nov 22, 2016, 2:15pm Top

>68 lorannen: I appreciate the concern shown by others, but for me, frankly, I can't imagine anyone who is desperate enough to try to game the system so they can get a few books being particularly evil. Rather, if indeed that is what's happening, I see them as being pretty desperate.

And maybe getting books given to them out of kindness and joy will improve them in some way!

Edited: Nov 22, 2016, 2:39pm Top

>75 majkia: I completely understand the love of books. I understand what it is like never being able to afford books. I buy maybe 2 a year if I'm lucky. I have had to depend on the donation thread myself for several years. I know it is just books but this is done by the kindness of other people heart and i want to keep it 100% fair. I am not saying anyone has lied thus far we really don't know. If it is a donation one per person who needs it then that's fair. Fudging the details to get more then your share is selfish. The requirements aren't even that strict.

I'm sorry I'm not trying to be rude just trying to share my thoughts.

Edited: Nov 22, 2016, 3:16pm Top

My apologies for misunderstanding around this. I need to weigh in better than I have--conversations with Loranne that I didn't handle right. In my defense, I was trying to handle calls too. I'm sorry for the static this has caused.

I'm completely fine with members donating to whoever they like. It's not our business to dictate those terms. I'm making that clear.

At the same time, I also think it's okay for members to target their donations. There has been a lot of concern about this from members, as shown above and elsewhere.

This is the course we've chosen with LibraryThing's future donations--donations by the LibraryThing company.

To that end, we're doubling our contributions, so that all prior gifts are honored, no matter how recent the account or how many books it has, but the new gifts only go to members who've got 50 books and have been around 2 months. We originally gave out 5 $25 gifts. We've increased that to 10, and I've asked Loranne to make them all $30, since $30 is the Amazon free-shipping cut-off.

That's where we bow out—I feel strongly it's not our job to tell members how to organize this. I'm sorry that we seemed to be doing that.

@ladylenneth is managing this thread. (She's a volunteer, not staff, and deserves a lot of praise for it!) I gather she thinks the 2/50 idea is a reasonable one. But if members want donations unrestrictedly, I'm sure that would be fine with her too.

Nov 22, 2016, 3:16pm Top

>77 timspalding: I do find it very reasonable. I understand why people are concerned and would want some basic rules on how their donations are used. I am also willing to pair people who are willing to over look this basic guideline and are still comfortable donating outside of the 2/50 rule. I am open to PMs from anyone and willing to work with anyone in the best way I can. I do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable or alienated and no one will be judged. I just am trying to be fair to everyone to the best of my ability. I am not a staffer so I can only do so much.

Nov 22, 2016, 3:17pm Top

>77 timspalding:

I'm sorry for the static this must have caused you. Thank you again.

Nov 22, 2016, 3:46pm Top

Aside from people possibly trying to game the system, I have previously been a SantaThing Santa for someone who did not list any books in their LT account and picking books for them was an extremely frustrating and un-fun process. I don't think it's too much to ask for someone to add 50 books to their account so that their Santa can successfully pick for them.

Nov 22, 2016, 4:05pm Top

>77 timspalding: That's totally reasonable. I also totally agree that this is a member-led, spontaneous gesture not 'official' and the spirit should remain so.

Personally, I'm OK with the risk of the odd request slipping through that's less than sincere rather than someone missing out whose Christmas would be a bit brighter for a book or two.

Also, Ho!Ho!Ho! (Oh, and it's not even December yet ... I'm going to be so annoying by Christmas!)

Nov 22, 2016, 4:41pm Top

>65 mellymel171328: It's not so much the asking as it's the second or so year I've needed to. It makes it a bit uncomfortable but it's the only time of year I get any books. And I'm sure about MrMorphy. He's so incredibly picky that it makes him almost impossible to pick books for.

>67 mellymel171328: I got it. Thank you so much!

Nov 22, 2016, 5:10pm Top

>77 timspalding: Thanks for fixing this with a fair solution. I'm glad other members can continue to target whomever they'd like and that I can continue to donate to new members.

To reiterate to new members: I am a donor willing to cover you. Happy holidays!

I have a couple of sponsorships left, and one or two of my friends may be able to kick in sponsorships as well. PM me if you would feel more comfortable asking me for a donation directly, rather than seeing if anyone else on this thread will sponsor you. Go to @diana.n and scroll down to "post to comment wall" and send me a private message with which bookstore you'd like to use. I'll get back to you with your sign up code as soon as I can.

Nov 22, 2016, 7:01pm Top

>82 Morphidae: I won't even lie due to living pay check to pay check and being on disability I think I've only been able to afford it maybe once the entire time I've done it. I don't want anyone to ever feel judged because like you it is mainly the only books I get in the year. So I have never judged who have needed it more often then others. I have had repeats donate years they could too. :)

>83 LibraryPerilous: not one person who has asked has been turned away and I've made sure if that. hello fellow book lovers. I would like to be added to the donation list. .

I have a little savings account where I start saving up for Christmas gifts and since I have no family I like to help people out through secret Santa, program such as this one, but this year my doggy Bella got sick.

I tried to get a care credit for pet care but I was denied. I ended up using my Christmas savings for my doggy. I've had her since 2009. January 1 I found her wandering the street. I guess it may sound kind of silly to some people, but to me it was a no-brainer to dip into the Christmas fund to help her.
Thank you all for this donation program

Hi, I'm sure the information on how to donate is here somewhere, but I'm not seeing it. Is there a "further info" page where I can sign up? Also, will I be picking books for someone, and will I find out who s/he is on the same day as the regular SantaThing match-ups go out?

Nov 25, 2016, 6:51pm Top

>115 NatalieSW: Basically you go to:

Ignore the book store options because they won't matter in this. Pick the paypal donation amount you want to donate. Go through the process and when you get the paypal confirmation number you save it.

Then you find a person in need of a donation. They then take the code and sign up like you did. :)

Yay it is SantaThing!!! I look forward to this time every year :-) I wish my doctors would let me work so I could pay for this and donate to others. Hopefully sometime in the future :-) So I would really love a donation this year to be part of this wonderful event. I really love the new authors that I discover through this wonderful event. Some years it is the only time I get new books. Last year I was able to get donations for my sister and niece. They loved it and would really love it if they could also be signed up for a donation. My sister is a stay at home mom and home-schools my 7 year old niece. They both love to read and spend a ton of time at the library. They love finding new books that they can all get together and read in the evening. Books are their form of entertainment and unfortunately they don't have the financial resources to buy more than the bare essentials. Although I would put books as essential, I don't expect that they would choose books over feeding their child :-). So a donation would help. I can help answer any questions about what they have already for whomever is selected to pick for them. I just hope all three of us can be signed up for a donation :-)

Thank you.

Nov 28, 2016, 7:59pm Top

>128 Limelite: Assuming you mean you'd like to donate, and not pick books for any Santees who need them at the end of things:

- Head over to the SantaThing sign-up page
- Without doing anything else, pick the price point you'd like to donate, and click the corresponding PayPal link
- This will take you over to PayPal, where you can submit your payment
- Once your payment is complete, instead of copying your Receipt # into the SantaThing sign-up form, copy it and send it to ladylenneth, she'll put you on the list of donors (if you like—if you'd rather remain anonymous, please say so in your message to her), and will match your donation to a Santee!

If my assumption is wrong, and you you in fact meant the latter, then hang tight! We'll need folks to pick books for extra Santees around December 12th, and I'll be announcing that over on the main SantaThing thread.
